The first exploratory committee for 2024 has been formed

Recommended Posts

Did you know that Republican Corey Stapleton, former Secretary of State of Montana, has formed an exploratory committee for 2024 on March 10th?

Might be a gig to attract publicity but still interesting. Never heard him being potentially interested and his relatively minor offices didn't look like the way to start a campaign.

He's definitely going to be one of those footnote candidates. The kind of enters a long time before the primaries and drops out a fair amount of time before. This is probably a way to build up some name recognition or some gain attention from some donors before he tries for something statewide.

True. I expected Delaney to run for Gov of MD. For whatever reason he didn't do so.

Or to put himself in position to get a cushy appointment in the case of a Republican victory

Hailing from Montana puts him probably into the perfect position to be appointed Secretary of Agriculture or the Interior.

Not sure I follow this argument.  It's not like Delaney ended up as Secretary of Commerce or something.  Declaring ridiculously early and accomplishing nothing isn't really a path to anything.

Buttigieg got Secretary of Transportation by winning Iowa and coming really close in NH.  Kamala Harris got Vice President by...well...being female and black, but she jumped ahead of other black women by having a notable campaign (albeit one where she dropped out ahead of Iowa, but she was still the only black woman in the race).

Delaney got nothing because he did nothing.  Much like this guy will get and do.

My statement was not an argument but rather a suggestion of his possible intentions. I know nothing about them, so it was a shot in the dark.

With that being said, there are far more appointments than just at the cabinet level.
