Here are the legislative proposal subtype categories. Use these to consider ideas for legislative proposals, governor actions, presidential actions, and supreme court cases for the Era of the Future and the Era of Independence --- the two high-need areas. Additionally, I'm open to some scripted event ideas for Era of the Future in these areas:

- Agriculture
- Bailout
- Banking
- Business/Labor
- Civil Rights
- Civil Service
- Credit/Debt
- Crimes/Punishments
- Currency
- Diplomacy
- Drugs
- Education
- Elections
- Environment
- Expansion
- Guns
- Healthcare
- Immigration
- Infrastructure
- Investigation
- Military
- National Security
- Courts
- Procedure
- Reconstruction
- Regulations
- Slavery
- Space
- Taxation
- Trade
- Warfare
- Welfare

I'm just gonna start a list here, and will probably add on in future posts.  Unless otherwise stated, these are all for the Era of the Future.  I'm also deliberately leaving some things out that I know others want to bring up.

-Space Colony Representation/Tensions/War

-Flying Cars (Regulations, stricter interstate compact on the matter than ground vehicles)

-Sea Colonies (Revives State v State border disputes and State v Federal territorial water disputes) (Gov action for state with a cost line (maybe great lakes) -found sea colony)

-Encryption regulations

-Genetic enhancement regulations (can have 'tiers', no gene altering, cosmetic only, ability enhancement, could subdivide into mental and physical enhancement)

-Use of Forensic genealogy regulation

-"Corporate Marriage"

-Defining the legal limits of 'airspace' vs 'space' for commercial space travel

-Space Jones Act

-biometric data regulation (I'm happy to say Illinois leads the way in this field)

-online privacy regulations

-"normal" privacy regulations being encoded more formally instead of via the backdoor of past SCOTUS cases

(that's all I have time for right now)

Edit:  If you need me to explain what I mean by any of these, feel free to ask, I'm just doing bullet points because I can probably keep going indefinitely.

Here are some more.

-GM Crop Regulation (both allowing/bans, but also patent rights and the "right to grow")

-4 Day or even 3 Day work week (though technically it's by number of hours, but you get the picture, I did the snappy slogan)

-Microchipping employee bans (When I said biometric data, I was thinking privacy concerns, but this is the same issue but workers rights)

-Free Junior College could be a Gov action as that seems to be a state level thing, but you could also expand it later in the future era to 4 year degrees, and maybe even further subdivide the issue into separate options for free law school, free medical school, etc.  Some of these I envision as nation wide, or you could have gov actions and congress both have the option.

-Cashless Society Programs (to be clear, I don't mean bitcoin, but I mean making the USD fully electronic)

-You probably already have this, but Universal Federal ID.  If you have it, go a step further for the Era of the Future and upgrade it to fully electronic format

-In the era of the future, instead of drugs, people could use direct brain computer fantasies/stimulation and those could be regulated like drugs or something.

-As we transition away from fossil fuels, we need some from of legislation regarding byproducts we still need like plastic (which we're reducing, but not eliminating, we probably won't be free of plastic entirely for a long while), but also things like noble gasses like helium which we mainly get from natural gas extraction and are absolutely vital to many industrial processes and devices.

-Regulation/SCOTUS cases involving 3D printed (or otherwise self-made) firearms.  Self-producing the weapon bypasses many (but not all) of the existing legal mechanisms involved in gun control.

-Space elevator (for bonus points, these need to be built at the equator, so it can be infrastructure, but also diplomacy, finding a suitable partner to host, if a "domestic" location is not available)

-Military Drone Regulations (could be domestic policy, but could also be international treaties on drone usage)

-Immigration regulations regarding refugees might be a hot topic.  Specifically, as a subcategory, immigration of stateless individuals, if statelessness becomes a problem as some predict it might.

-This is for all eras, really, but regarding tax law - the US taxes citizens living abroad.  Even though the threshold is high, it's still a pain as mandatory reporting requirements make it hard to find a bank willing to do business with you, and you have to pay an expensive foreign tax specialist to file every year even if you don't owe.  I have a friend who this is her pet issue, so while I have your attention, I thought I'd bring it up heh.

On @OrangeP47 last point, I was shocked when a friend at work who is a US citizen told me you guys have both Federal and State Income Tax. Our constitution reserves this type of taxation for the Federal govt here.

Maybe a Constitutional Amendment making Taxation a solely Federal responsibility?

On Education - banning home schooling, funding for private schools, banning funding for private schools, government control of colleges, banning private investment in colleges, banning specific industries donating to colleges (like big oil), regulation around identifying who has paid for research papers.

Warfare - US gives up Nuclear weapons. US withdraws from NATO. US withdraws from UN treaty, will use chemical weapons if deemed necessary to protect the nation. US signs international land mine ban treaty. Online warfare with other country/nefarious online actor of unknown origin.

Space - US declares space above US to be sovereign, any intrusion into the area to be considered an act of war. Private companies banned from space. US leads push (or joins push) to internationalise space, UN becomes responsible for all future missions through new Agency.

Elections - online voting, reduced age of voting, removal of age limit to run for president,

Regulation - Federal government takes control of work entitlements, total portability of work benefits such as sick leave.

Taxation - Compulsory Superannuation (and the level of minimum contribution of it). Land Tax introduced as a yearly tax on the primary residence, or only on a 2nd and subsequent property, rate of land tax)

Health - Prescription drug pricing regulations (either setting caps on the price that can be charged or subsidising the price directly to the manufacturer)

April Fools Day 2032 - US sets Mar-a-Lago as Presidential residence. 1600 Pennsylvannia Ave turned into the National Museum of 2nd rate Presidents.

I presume you have the standard healthcare reforms already for era of the future, or should I say, the obvious ones, but let me propose a slightly less obvious one - Nationalize the Insurance Industry.  It's a subtle, slightly different option than creating single payer from scratch. It'd likely piss off more people, but also have less start up cost in terms of bureaucratic infrastructure.  So basically slightly tweak the modifers.

I'd add that if a US Sen or US Rep proposes that. Don't want too many ahistorical things. I'm okay with failed proposals. I've just never heard of this idea, so I'm hesitant to include it.

Eh, it's where I expect the debate will be in 20 years, as someone that works for the Industry (unfortunately).  I'm basing it off the fact that many states have already outsourced medicaid to the insurance giants (and it actually works quite well).

Did some thinking on the "Era of Independence" request:

LegProp

  • Establishment of continental currency
    • Recognition/non-recognition of state currencies (if established)
  • Refusal of British pound for purchases
  • Withold/grant payments to foreign soldiers/officers
  • Invite foreign officers to fight for colonists
  • Pay slaveowners for slaves to fight/serve in continental army
    • Grant freedom to former slaves who served in continental army
    • Early version of "Mule and 50 acres" for veteran freed slaves
  • Prisoner of war exchange with Britain
  • Establishment of military prisons for British troops
  • Authorize privateers to fight British navy
    • Authorize black market trading for supplies for ongoing war effort
  • Establishment of armories/consolidation of armories in strategic regions
    • New England
    • Mid-Atlantic
    • Deep South
  • Establishment/reinforcement of West Point

GovAct

  • Organize volunteer militia
  • Establish state currency
  • Fund/defund militia equipment (purchases of high-quality arms)
  • Write/finalize state constitution
  • Establish state judicial circuits

You might already have something like this, but I think it'd add to the replayability value if there were a number of countries that there was a chance could emerge as a major player in geopolitics in the future, and in, say 2050, we find ourselves in a great power conflict like the Cold War or the current situation with China but with India or Brazil or hit us out of left field with great power conflict versus Tanzania.

Had another thought, if we're touching on genetic engineering, we gotta touch on the other side of the coin too, cybernetics 😉

Is it conceivable that cybernetics in a world that hasn't fully reconciled robot rights or autonomy runs into a ship of theseus dilemma for the Supreme Court?

I was listening to a podcast last night about who might replace Putin when he’s gone one day.  And it made me think about creating a future era event for that...and the Queens death too...

But then I thought maybe we can simplify.  Create a general event where one of the main countries has a change in leadership, 50/50 chance of our relationship getting better or worse.

A few other ideas for Era of Independence ideas-

- Deport British sympathizers (historically, about 80,000 people left the US and went to Canada or Britain when the US won the war)

- The Galloway Plan of 1774.  It was closely rejected, but it proposed that popularly elected Grand Council that would represent the interests of the colonies as a whole, and would be a continental equivalent to the English Parliament. It was rejected by a six to five vote on October 22, 1774 at the 1st Continental Congress.  I don't know if this would change the game mechanics or not.

- Appoint Justices in the Colonies (historically, this was something the crown did.  Would be "generic" maybe and grant a random player in each state a +1 Justice trait?)

- Petition France for immediate help (LaFayette appears as a General)

- Prohibit Admiralty Courts from gaining profit when condemning seized cargo (more money to the government but unhappy men in positions of power/justice)

- Forbid the exportation of accused criminals to England (obviously before the Declaration is announced)

- Adopt a National Flag (Happened historically on June 14, 1777, but could do it earlier or later and even have different "designs" to pick from)

(on a related note, there was an attempt, in 2005 to pass a Constitutional amendment that said- "The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States."  It failed by only 1 vote in the Senate so maybe this could be added to Era of the Future ideas?)

Including my ancestors!  There's a town in Canada named after us because my great great great great (etc) grandfather was a British loyalist who fought against those damned rebels in New York. ;c)  Received land in Canada for their loyalty.  Didn't trickle back down to the US until well after the Civil War.

I think all my ancestors were either in the old world or were on the Patriot side...I actually had an ancestor in NC that was in the Colonial Assembly and then an officer in the NC Militia.

Off topic, but all ya'll having fun with these ancestory things in the revolution and civil war, and my family tree didn't arrive in this country until mostly the 20th century 😆

At least I can say I can say "wasn't us" whenever a historical problem of the 19th century comes up 😋

Haha.  My ancestors fought against the Americans in the Revolutionary War.  My wife’s ancestors were proud slave holding confederates.  Our history is a mess. ;c)

The Irish part of my family has been here a bit longer, but the German part (the majority) came over in 1914, just in time to avoid WW1 in Europe.  Probably literally dodged a bullet with that one.
