Early Look at my Shakespeare game

Recommended Posts

Is the goal of the game to hire playwrights, actors, and stagehands to perform the plays to score points, which are measured in popularity?

If I had to guess the iconography, then Shakespeare costs 30£ to hire, provides 1 skill point to productions, generates no additional star power, can create 7 plays which have to be of skill value 4+ for performing.

I love historical games like this, so count me intrigued.

I was really hoping your victorian political game was next on the agenda, but this looks interesting too.

This one is the closest to finished. I want to take a break from politics. If I keep making games, I'll probably alternate between politicians and non-politics. Except for AMPU 2, I don't plan to make any more massive games. It's been quite a sacrifice of time. The Victorian political game is probably the first up among the political games. The rival is a Napoleon-based political game, which would focus on politics as much as military. The issue with both of these, is that they will require a lot of research, and I won't go into the projects with the same mental reservoir I have for US politics.

The great thing about the Shakespeare game is that it is theoretically ready for playtesting a month from whenever I get back to it.

After AMPU or after the Shakespeare game, I might take a break, unless it is clear I can make a living off making games. In which case, I can probably multitask making several at once, so long as they aren't as massive as AMPU.

You play the part of a theatre impresario. You buy/sell theatres, buy/sell play manuscripts, buy/sell texts that inspire plays, hire/fire playwrights, hire/fire actors, and you attempt to outcompete other impresarios. I actually don't remember off hand what all those values are. It's been 3 years since I touched the game. The 1 skill is his acting ability. He's not great. The 7 is his creative ability. The star is his prestige. That can go up as he gains fame. The money is his base cost, which increases with prestige. Poet means he can handle certain events. I think that's how I have it.

I probably won't start working on this until AMPU is in early release, but here's an image of the game from when I was initially making it as a board game: @MrPotatoTed @ConservativeElector2 and anyone else that might be interested.

The show I'm in right now ("Something Rotten") is about two playwrights trying to make a living during the Era of Shakespeare.  One of the playwrights in particular is extremely pissed off that everyone loves Shakespeare so much.  Very funny show.

I play Thomas Nostradamus (nephew of "the" Nostradamus).  They pay me to look into the future and see what audiences will line up around the block to see -- so I look into the future and discover musicals -- something that doesn't exist in their era.

So they decide to write the first musical...but can't decide what it will be about, so they pay me to look into the future again and see what Shakespeare's greatest play will be.  I see "Hamlet", which he hasn't written yet -- but I'm apparently not a great reader, so I think the name of his play is "Omelette."

So the two guys end up writing the first ever musical -- about eggs.  Ha.

This game is going to go from c. 1585-c.1642. Basically from the formation of the London playing companies to when the Puritans shut down the theatres. My original game ended at the death of Queen Elizabeth in c. 1603. I can expand this since I now intend to move it from boardgame to PC.
