Supreme Court time! (with 2 vacancies)

First Justices that have served for 10 years and every 10 years after might shift ideologies.

  • Justice Baldwin (Free Soil Dems) shifts to the right from Moderate to Conservative.
  • Justice McLean (Anti-Mason Whigs) shifts to the middle from Liberal to Moderate.

The Court hears Ableman v. Booth- Can a state court grant a writ of habeas corpus to a prisoner arrested under the authority of the United States and in federal custody?

Initial votes

  • Chief Justice Taney votes Aye
  • Justice McLean votes Nay
  • Justice Story votes Nay
  • Justice McKinley votes Aye
  • Justice Caltron votes Nay
  • Justice Wayne votes Aye
  • Justice Baldwin votes Nay

Taney, Catron, and McKinley attempt vote swaying shenanigans. They all fail to sway any votes.

The final vote is 4 Nay to 3 Aye.

Law and Order factions benefit from this decision.

The orders for the Ambassadors:

UK: Improve Relations

French: Improve Relations

Spain: Improve Relations

German: Improve Relations

Russian: Improve Relations

Well, I guess that's what ambassadors do.

  • Amb Everett succeeds in the UK. Relations increase 1 to Neutral.
  • Amb Cass fails in France. Relations decrease 1 to between Neutral and Hostile.
  • Amb Clayton fails in Spain (uh...oh...). Relations can't decrease beyond enemies Luckily we can't send ambassadors to enemies.
  • Amb Johnson doesn't succeed or fail. He just exists.
  • Amb Bancroftt succeeds in Russia. Relations increase 1 to between Neutral and Friendly. The Russians are the great nation that like America the most now.

We avoid the 10% chance of a Spanish skirmish due to the hatred between the nations.

There is no military action phase this turn despite simmering tensions with the Spanish over Cuba.

Congress is now in session

Because the nation is making a surplus, there is no limit on spending bills.

Texas Statehood is a bill that can be taken up by Congress this term and is worth double points for the relevant cards.

Senators that can propose

  • Lafayette Foster (Anti-Masons)
  • Thomas Clayton (Anti-Masons)
  • William Woodbridge (Anti-Masons)
  • John L Kerr (Anti-Masons)
  • William Rufus King (Conservative Democrats)
  • John C Calhoun (Conservative Democrats)

Representatives that can propose

  • John W Jones (Popular Sovereignty Democrats)
  • Reuben Chapman (Popular Sovereignty Democrats)
  • Robert Rhett (Conservative Democrats)
  • Joshua R Giddings (Conscience Whigs)
  • David Wallace (Anti-Masons)
  • Joseph Trumbull (States Rights Whigs)
