Following the election of Tony Benn as Leader of the Labour Party, and Prime Minister, Tony Crosland and a group of four Labour MPs (Shirley Williams, David Owen, Roy Jenkins, and Bill Rodgers) split off to form the Social Democratic Party. Deprived of their majority, the Labour party was unable to thwart a Tory initiated vote of no-confidence, and an election was called.
