Welcome to 1948!!!!

In an upset that almost nobody saw coming President Truman has won re-election and both chambers of Congress flipped to Democratic control.  He pulled this off even with his party fracturing around him and running a candidate both from his left and right.  With full control of the government can the Democrats manage to bring themselves together to govern effectively or will the Republicans use their disarray to advance their agenda.

With WWII behind us a new battle has begun pitting the US and Soviet Union against each other.  Many fear a war between the two could lead to global catastrophe with us now being in the Nuclear Age. Back home, the threat of communists and socialists within our own ranks is helping some politicians gain influence through scare tactics. The post-war economy is currently sound but with the looming threats all around us it won’t take much to send us into a crisis.

Excited to get started and happy to have those joining, both experienced and new. I am still working on the spreadsheet but got a lot done today and I think we should be ready in a day or two.  I will be sharing the doc soon and I’ll reach out to those I need an email for.

I’ve decided to go with all player-run teams to start since there was plenty of interest. However, in an effort to keep this playtest moving along at a decent pace, since there are a lot of us to wrangle up each time, I will have to strictly enforce the 24-hour rule. If the deadline has passed and I’m available to process things, then I will run your faction as CPU for that one part.  Repeated violations and we will have to look for a replacement.  If you will be unavailable for a stretch, then no worries, but, if possible, please give me a heads up or you can give one of your teammates permission to make decisions for you.  I don’t have access to the doc when I’m working (just to the forum) so I will typically be processing things in the evenings and night.

 

Ok so first up we need to decide on factions.  I will post below each factions’ ideology and some of the current leading pols.  Let me know your preference. I'll do my best to accommodate everyone but if two really want the same faction I will roll for it.

Red 1 – Liberal/Progressive – Earl Warren, Harold Stassen, Edward Brooke

Red 2 – Moderate – Nelson Rockefeller, John Foster Dulles, Prescott Bush

Red 3 – Moderate – Thomas E Dewey, Arthur Vandenburg, George Romney

Red 4 – Conservative – Dwight D Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Joseph Martin Jr

Red 5 – Conservative/Traditionalist/RW Populist – Robert Taft, Everett Dirksen, Douglas MacArthur

Blue 1 – Liberal/Progressive/LW Populist – W Averell Harriman, Henry A Wallace, Henry Morgenthau

Blue 2 – Liberal – Adlai E Stevenson II, Burton K Wheeler, James Farley

Blue 3 – Moderate – Lyndon B Johnson, Harry S Truman, Sam Rayburn

Blue 4 – Moderate – Ronald Reagan (yes he’s a Democrat currently), Stuart Symington, Mike Mansfield

Blue 5 – Traditionalist – Richard Russell Jr, Harry F Bryd Sr, Strom Thurmond

You play them as you wish to play them, but you'll want to play for points. Your faction will gain or lose points based on the complete makeup of your politicians. For instance, if you have more Traditionalists than other factions, then you'll likely have the Traditionalist tag to your faction, which means you'll score points for things that are supported by Traditionalists and lose points for things hated by Traditionalists. There are times when you might want to support things that lose points for you, but that would only be during times of national emergency. For instance, if you want to avert a Civil War, you might relucantly accept something that might cause you to lose points.

We've seen multiple strategies: I played purely according to cards. Others on my team played for party benefit. Others just wanted to see what would happen.

Well when the game finally comes out....I intend to run the way I want to but for now will see

Ok teams and factions and below. Most were able to get one of their top choices.  Blue 4 and 5 were not popular however. (Not much love for the Sothern segregationists it seems.) So shoutout to @Murrman104 who was open to any faction and to @ShortKing who only got his 5th choice. As you were the only one to have Blue 4 in your top 5.
