vcczar
@matthewyoung123 @Joe303300 @jnewt @Rezi @OrangeP47 and @ebrk85. PRESEASON During this phase, there will be ability adjustments, but I'm not doing that in this playthrough. For future reference, players will have rookie abilities, base abilities, and peak abilities, players will also degrade. So for now, owners need to set their starters. Here are the competitive battles for you to make your decisions: Broncos @Joe303300 Do you go with incumbent QB starter Steve DeBerg or with rookie Dan Marino? Marino is superior in every way. Cardinals @OrangeP47 Do you stick with the younger QB Neil Lomax as starter or does your team go back to long-time starting QB Jim Hart? Hart is superior only in passing stamina, avoiding sacks, and avoiding fumbles. Lomax is overall a better passer. Colts @ebrk85 You have three QBs, but Art Schlichter is the worst QB in the game right now. The real battle is between incumbent Mike Pagel and rookie John Elway. Pagel is only better at avoiding sacks and avoiding fumbles. Elway is a better passer and has a way higher passing stamina and clutch. Cowboys @Joe303300 Cowboys have 3 QBs. Danny White is the incumbent, and he bests Hogeboom and rookie Blackledge in every passing category. Blackledge is better in avoiding sacks. Hogeboom is better in avoiding fumbles. Cowboys also have to pick between two TEs, Doug Cosbie and Billy Joe Dupree. Cosbie gives a higher chance of a higher completion %, while DuPree gives a higher chance of a higher TD% Dolphins @jnewt Incumbent QB David Woodley bests rookie Jim Kelly in TD ability and avoiding INTs. Kelly, however, completes more passes, is better at avoiding sacks, has a higher passing stamina, and has a higher clutch ability. Falcons @jnewt You have two RBs who could start. Andrew Williams has slighty better rushing skill than Gerald Riggs, but Gerald Riggs has a higher chance of scoring TDs. Williams has the added bonus of potentially helping the passing game. Giants @Rezi QB Scott Brunner is the historical starter because Phil Simms was injured. However, I have injuries off. Simms is superior in every way except for avoiding sacks and avoiding fumbles. Lions @OrangeP47 Two mediocre QBs heres. Hipple is the incumbent, but Danielson is a tad better at gaining passing yards, completing passes, passing stamina, avoiding sacks, and in clutch. Hipple is the same as Danielson in everything else that matters. Oilers @Joe303300 You have 3 QBs with Gifford Nielson as the current starter. Backups are Archie Manning (father of Peyton and Eli) and Warren Moon, who you signed from the CFL. Moon is better at racking up yards. Put they are otherwise all identical in passing skill. Manning is slightly more mobile than the other two. Moon has more clutch and passing stamina than the other two. Nielson and Manning are much better at avoiding fumbles than Moon. Overall, Moon is probably the better choice, but you'll want to build a great OL for him in the future to avoid rampant fumbles. Raiders @jnewt Raiders have 3 QBs with two-time SB winner Jim Plunkett as the incumbent. Backups are Marc Wilson and rookie Tony Eason. Plunkett is the better passing, except Eason is better at avoiding INTs and avoiding fumbles. Rams @ebrk85 Two QBs. Incumbent Ferragamo and backup Jeff Kemp, son of former QB and future 1996 VP nominee Jack Kemp. Kemp is better at racking up yards per pass and avoiding INTS. Ferragamo is much more clutch, has higher passing stamina, and is better at avoiding fumbles. Redskins @matthewyoung123 QB Joe Theismann now has competition from rookie Ken O'Brien. O'Brien is better at completing passes and avoiding INTs and in passing stamina. However, Theismann is more clutch, better at avoiding fumbles, and is more mobile. Saints @OrangeP47 At QB, you have Ken Stabler and Doug Williams, the latter who you picked up as a Free Agent. Stabler is superior in every way except for avoiding INTs, avoiding sacks, and he's more mobile. Seahawks @OrangeP47 You have two QBs: incumbent Dave Krieg and former long-time starter Jim Zorn. Krieg is superior in every way except for in avoiding sacks, passing stamina, and avoiding fumbles. Vikings @jnewt You have three QBs. Steve Dils is the incumbent. Wade Wilson will rack up more yards per pass and will complete more passes. Tommy Kramer will get more TDs per pass and avoid more sacks. Steve Dils will avoid more INTs. Wilson is more mobile. Both Wilson and Kramer have more clutch than Dils. Kramer has the highest passing stamina. Wilson is better at avoiding fumbles.

O'Brien is better at completions and avoiding INT's and impressed in training camp. Theismann will start as the backup and be used in late game/close game situations (clutch), and perhaps on Run/Pass option plays where you need a more mobile QB and not a pocket passer.

vcczar
NFC Central Team Boosts Bears @Joe303300 C Hilgenberg Rush +1 - RB Payton is already at A+, but this protect him from a defender lowering his ability. Hilgenberg will cancel out Lion's DT English's boost on Payton. G Bortz Rush +1 - Payton is now protected from two defenders lowering his ability. MLB Singletary decreases opponent's Red Zone Rushing by 1. Effects all RBs in their division. Buccaneers @Rezi Zero boosts. The team has only three notable players. RB Wilder will be effected by Bears MLB Singletary's boost, making Wilder a C- in the Red Zone, rather than a C for this season. Lions DT English decrease's Wilder's rushing by 1, making him a C- in Rushing rather than a C. Lions @OrangeP47 DT English decreases division opponent's Rushing by 1. RB Sims loses -1 in Red Zone because of Singletary. He goes from A- to B+. Packers @matthewyoung123 Zero boosts. The team has only three notable players. They also have no notable RB, so they avoid penalties as they already have an F in rushing. Vikings @jnewt WR Clayton has a rookie of the year like season! He will boost QB Kramer in both Yards per Attempts and in Avoiding Interceptions! Kramer moves from C in both categories to a C+. T Hinton would boost the Rushing ability of a RB, but the team lacks a notable RB. I guess I'll allow it to boost the no name RB from an F to D-. That's this division. I'll be moving slowly because I have so many other things to do today. Best non-QB of the division is Vikings rookie WR Mark Clayton as he provides two boosts. Let me add all this to the spreadsheets now. 1
vcczar
AFC Central Team Boosts Bengals @ebrk85 WR Curtis has a career year! Two boosts for QB Anderson, who gets +1 in both yards per attempt and avoiding INTs. However, Curtis will just nullify the decrease in avoid INT because of Oilers Browner's boost. Anderson will get an avoid INT from Steelers Lambert as Curtis can't block to avoid INTs with his boost. T Munoz gives a +1 rushing boost. As the Bengals lack a notable RB, this just moves the rushing game from an F to a D- Rookie MLB Mecklenburg will have a sack happy season. He will reduce avoid sack to all QBs in the division. Oilers's Brazile boost has no effect on the Bengals as they lack an RB. Browns @Rezi Rookie C Oates provides two boosts! He will reduce avoid sack for QB Brian Sipe and he will boost Red Zone Rushing for RB Pruitt. Bengals's boost from Mecklenburg cancels the avoid sack boost and Brazile's boost cancels out the Red Zone rushing boost for Pruitt. In short, Oates just saved both Sipe and Pruitt. Avoid INT reduced x2 because of Oilers's Browner and Steelers Lambert Oilers @Joe303300 OLB Brazile stifles the Red Zone rushing for his division opponents. Rookie S Browner decreases Avoid INT for all division QBs Moon's avoid INT reduced because of Steelers Lambert. Steelers @jnewt WR Stallworth will boost QB Bradshaw's yards per attempt +1 C Mike Webster's avoid sack boost will cancel out Broncos Mecklenburg's boost MLB Lambert will decrease avoid INTs to all division QBs. CB Wright will lower avoid INT for all other QBs in the division Chief's Cherry and Raider's Haynes decreases Marino's TD% x2 Raider's Alzado has no impact as Broncos lack a notable RB. Seahawks's Brown will lower Marino's avoid INTs Chargers @Rezi Rookie T Covert has a once-in-a-lifetime season. He boosts in all three of his possible categories! Fouts gets a boost to avoid sacks. RB Muncie will get boosts to both rushing and red zone rushing! Redzone rushing is canceled out by Raiders DE Alzado Broncos's Wright and Seahawks's Brown will lower Fouts's avoid INT x2 Chief's Cherry and Raider's Haynes decreases Fouts's TD% x2 Raider's Long decreases Fouts's Comp% Chiefs @matthewyoung123 Rookie G Matthews also has a one-in-a-lifetime season, although Matthews is so skilled this was far more likely. QB Kenney will see his avoid sack boosted. Unfortunately, the Chiefs lack a RB, but the team will go from an F in both rushing categories to a D- nonetheless. A RB is probably the priority for this team. Redzone rushing is canceled out by Raiders DE Alzado S Cherry will decrease the TD% for all other QBs in the division. Broncos's Wright and Seahawks's Brown will lower Kenney's avoid INT x2 Raider's Long decreases Kenney's Comp% Raider's Haynes lowers Kenney's TD% Raiders @jnewt RB Allen boosts QB Plunkett's comp% DE Long will lower the comp% of opposing QBs in the division. DE Alzado will lower the rushing redzone of other RBs in the division CB Haynes lowers TD% of other QBs in the division Chief's Cherry decreases Plunkett's TD% Broncos's Wright and Seahawks's Brown will lower Plunkett's avoid INT x2 Seahawks @OrangeP47 RB Warner boosts Krieg's comp% but it is canceled out by Raider Long's boost. Rookie C Sapolu boosts rookie RB Warner's rushing CB Brown will lower the avoid INT of other QBs in the division. vcczar
NFC West Falcons @jnewt Falcons fail to have any helpful boosts. 49ers Dean and Ram's Youngblood lowers Bartkowki's avoid sack x2 Rams' Youngblood lowers rushing and red zone rushing for RB Riggs. With Rams' Talley also lowering red zone rushing, Riggs is decreased here x2. 49ers @matthewyoung123 WR Clark boosts Montana's TD% Rookie G Newton boosts both Avoid Sack for Montana and Rushing. They lack a notable RB, but rushing will be boosted from an F to D- at least. Rams' Youngblood's boost cancels out the avoid sack boost and the rushing boost. DE Dean will decrease Avoid Sack for all other QBs in the division. Rams @ebrk85 T Slater boosts rookie RB Dickerson's rushing. DE Youngblood has an INSANE year. He decreased avoid sacks to all other QBs in the division. He decreases both rushing and red zone rushing for all other RBs in the division. OLB Talley decreases Red Zone rushing for other RBs in the division. 49ers Dean lowers Ferragamo's avoid sack Saints @OrangeP47 Like the Falcons, no helpful boosts. 49ers Dean and Ram's Youngblood lowers QB Stabler's avoid sack x2 Rams' Youngblood and Talley reduce RB Rogers's red zone rushing x2, while Youngblood also lowers rushing by 1. At least, he has a shot at getting the top pick next year. Dolphin's Roby and Patriot's Camarillo reduces QB Elway's clutch x2 Patriot's Byrd reduces QB Elway's avoid INT Dolphins @jnewt WR Duper has a great season, boosting rookie QB Kelly's yards per attempt and completion abilities! Rookie T Tuinei boosts both QB Kelly's avoid sack but also rookie RB James's redzone rushing! Rookie P Reggie Roby reduces the clutch of every other QB in the division! Patriot's Byrd reduces QB Kelly's avoid INT Patriot's Camarillo reduces QB Kelly's clutch Jets @OrangeP47 Rookie C Mosebar boosts QB Todd's avoid sack Dolphin's Roby and Patriot's Camarillo reduces QB Todd's clutch x2 Patriot's Byrd reduces QB Todd's avoid INT Patriots @matthewyoung123 Rookie CB Byrd reduces avoid INT of other QBs in the division. P Camarillo reduces QB clutch of other QBs in the division. Dolphin's Roby reduces QB Grogan's clutch This is an interesting scenario. vcczar
1983 NFL Team Strength #s. These will play a big role in simulating the Regular Season States. Generally, I would sim half the season, then we'd do trades, and then I'd simulate the rest, but considering this is a 1st playthrough, I'm going to have no mid-season trades for now. Otherwise, I'd have to recalculate everything for teams that had trades, and I don't want to do that until the game is more polished. vcczar
@matthewyoung123 @Joe303300 @jnewt @Rezi @OrangeP47 and @ebrk85. 1983 QB Stats! I may need to adjust this a bit in future. Joe Montana is probably the frontunner for NFL MVP, both for his wins and his statistics. The 18 INTs is kind of a surprise. Jim McMahon, an ultimate game manager, gets more wins than passing TDs. Marino was well worth a 1st round pick. Jack Thompson was awful, but he would have been much worse if he threw more. Finding a replacement for him is a top priority. Dan Fouts has an off year. Bill Kenney needs a lot of help. He shouldn't be throwing this much. Get him a RB. John Elway did fairly well despite having a terrible team. His 4 wins were unexpected as he should have had only 1 win. Jim Kelly is likely the Rookie of the Year Moon unexpectedly is a game manager QB because RB Earl Campbell is so good. To resign Moon, Oilers will have to agree to allow Moon to pass more because his passing stamina will make that one of his demands. Oilers need to draft a WR. Both Dickey and Grogan aren't this bad. They were ruined for the same reasons: Both were throwing way more than they should be, especially Dickey. Both were hammered by strong defensive boosts in their division and received few boosts from their offenses, if any at all. Grogan's 40 INTs is the worst performance since George Blanda threw like 43 of them. This is vintage Jim Plunkett. Scores a bunch of wins despite throwing more INTs than TDs. O'Brien had a decent season for a rookie.
