I’d pick Gore over the guy who would have lost the Cold War

You fail to consider how hard "Acid, Amnesty, and Abortion" goes

Pretty indifferent between McGovern and Gore myself, but McGovern seemed funnier

Acid and amnesty are based but abortion is satanic cringe

While many Democrats are probably left of McGovern today, for his time, he was way further left than most Democrats. For instance, I think if 0 = party line Democrat, and +#= left of and -# = right of w/ 10 being the furthest deviation, McGovern would be like a +4 to +6. Humphrey would be like a +1. LBJ 0. Carter at -2. Mondale at 0. Clinton at -1 for his 1992 and 0 for 1996 (as he pulled the party to him). Gore was a 0 in 2000 (later moved left).

To me, the vote is between an establishment Democrat and someone with vision, like McGovern. He's often forgotten but he was a groundbreaking Senator. He's the primary reason we have nationwide primaries in presidential elections.

honestly surprised how close it is between Humph and LBJ

I am too. Humphrey was great before he was VP. He went from progressive to establishment liberal. If not for Vietnam, I think LBJ is a clear top 5 president. I tend to overlook Vietnam somewhat because LBJ's lasting impact is on domestics and justice and healthcare. I think once the Vietnam War vets all die, LBJ's moves into the permanent top 10 at least.

I wonder on what the reaction of a Eugene Debs presidential victory would look like especially at height of WW1.

It would definitely test the policy of suppressing labor for the war effort. What would mobilization have looked like with a more union friendly President.  What I wonder about is what would have happened with Soviet-US relations. Presumably we wouldn't have sided with the white army. From there, who  knows.

So much would depend on if a Debs presidency means that many of the Gov, Sen, US Reps, and judges were also socialists in this alternate history. If not, Debs might be basically powerless.
