Liberals Address Parliament's Return

A day after the State Opening of Parliament (seen below)

State Opening of Parliament, 1970 | The Royal Watcher

"Mr. Thorpe!" The speaker's voice rings out after several back and forth questionnaires between rival parties and the new Prime Minister, Tony Benn.

"Thank you, Mr. Speaker." The Liberal leader steps up to speak at his post at the bench. "It is with great sorrow I rise today to address the House. I intend to address the comments made by the Prime Minister the day before yesterday after the Labour leadership contest. While I congratulate the Prime Minister, and the Leader of the Opposition, on their respective victories, it is the way with which the Prime Minister spoke that leads me to cause of alarm."

"I quote, Mr. Speaker, from the speech given by the Prime Minister: "Marxism is not synonymous with communism and it is not true that there is growing up in the Labour Party a dominant group which believes in violent revolution". Well that is a relief, now isn't it? The Labour Party doesn't believe in violent revolution, isn't that a relief?" Liberal members pound their hands against their seats to display their backing. "What isn't a relief is the Honorable Member for Bristol South East's backing of Marxism. Leftism is not Marxism. Leftism is Liberalism."

"I would like to extend the Liberal hand of friendship," His voice rises as the Commons gets noisier. "To any Honorable Member on the other side of these Benches that is uncomfortable with this new Labour Party. The Liberal Party offers you an alternative. For any Honorable Gentleman or Gentlewoman that wishes to join us here on the Liberal benches, I say welcome. Welcome! And thrice, welcome! History beckons, and only those who listen will be able to alter it. I yield back, Mr. Speaker."

"Mr. Speaker, if I may, I'd like to respond to the Honorable leader of the Liberal Party. I will first clarify, I am not a Marxist. I am however, a Socialist, in following with the teachings of Jesus Christ, and in the great British Trade Union tradition of such men as Kier Hardy. That line in my speech was simply in defense of the many Marxists in this great party of mine. I have no shame in admitting that there are a number of Marxist members in the Labour party, there always has been. However, the Labour party is not a Marxist party, nor even a truly Socialist party. We are a party, in representation of the working class, and we always have been. Since our very beginnings, we've had a number of influences, and yes, that includes Marxism. Marxism has, from the earliest days, always been openly accepted by the party as one of many sources of inspiration within our movement, along with-though much less influential than-Christian Socialism, Fabianism, Owenism, trade unionism, or even radical Liberalism. Even today, the diversity of thought in our party is one of the things I'm so proud of. We have Marxists, yes, we have Marxists, but more than that, we have Social Democrats, Christian Socialists, and yes, Liberals. Despite what Mr. Thorpe says, I would consider the Labour party, in point of fact, to be the true party of Liberalism. After all, the welfare state we enjoy today, was it not Atlee, and Bevan who engineered it, despite opposition from Churchill, and Davies? Because of this, I too extend my hand in friendship. I extend it to all the members of Parliament, who support this great country's welfare state, to join us in Labour party, for we are, after all, the ones who built it to begin with! "

William Whitelaw Addresses Parliament with Shocking Remarks

"Mr Whitelaw!" Speaker Lloyd would shout.

gettyimages-678577699-612x612.thumb.jpg.1f40c9be437b13165dc620e8a3f3d809.jpg

"Thank you Mr. Speaker."

Whitelaw would pause, appearing as if he is in deep thought on what he is about to do.

"My fellow countrymen. I rise here today with deep, self-reflection on what I am about to do. But first, I would like to say, I believe the new Prime Minister is an honorable man. With honorable intentions. However, the recent comments made by the Prime Minister are DEEPLY alarming to many in this room, and many around this nation. A total repudiation of capitalism? A suggestion that Marxism is acceptable? What has this country come to! The Prime Minister says he cares about all workers of this nation, and all citizens, except capitalists! What about those that have been prosperous under the system of free enterprise that our country has established? We in the Conservative Party are saying that we must do better! We must have free, and well regulated capitalism. Prime Minister Wilson's resignation was a shock to all of us, but in the months that he was Prime Minister our nation still has seen a failure to fix our struggling economy, and in wake of his resignation, the solution is a complete overthrow of the system in favor of what Prime Minister Benn intends to do?"

"It is with great regret that I do this, but the future of the United Kingdom itself is at stake. I call upon all of my colleagues, to heed the warnings we have been hearing. Prime Minister Benn refuses to call an election, and let the voice of the BRITISH people decide if he should be Prime Minister! Now, it is time that we ensure the will of the people is heard. I hereby introduce a motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister, and I urge all colleagues who care about the future of our nation, to join me in doing so. All are welcome in the movement of the Conservative Party, that we have started here today. Where the Prime Minister seeks to isolate, we seek to integrate. Thank you all, and God Save the Queen!"

Shouting, cheering, jeering, chaos would all ensue after Whitelaws speech. The Speaker shouting, "ORDER! ORDERRRRR!"

The rest is up to fate.

Leader of the Opposition Edward Heath would work behind the scenes solidifying connections and ensuring members of other parties join in supporting the motion of no confidence. Calling on the UUP, and the Liberal Party.

The Labour Party will heavily whip its MPs to vote against the motion of no confidence, and Tony Benn personally assures the party, that any dissenters will be deselected for the resultant election. The Party also asks moderate, and highly respected parliamentarians like Jim Callaghan, and Roy Jenkins to campaign among Non-Labour MPs in the hopes of avoiding an early election (@The Blood).

Labour Deputy Leader James Callaghan Slams Vote Of No Confidence:

Labour Deputy Leader James Callaghan will host an official press conference in reaction to recent events. Walking up to the podium with a look of determination and fire, he will begin, "The struggling school teacher does not care about the bickering of Westminster. The struggling, unrepresented coal miner does not care about the ideologies the Prime Minister mentions. The underfed and undereducated child does not give bollocks about the fabricated outrage generated by Conservatives while our nation suffers. What these people care about is having effective and good governance. They care about having a government which is built in their name and which will fight for them in this troubling time. Look, I may not agree with everything the Prime Minister says or does, or with everything which he believes, but I know that he is determined to build a government in the name of Britain's people, and I know that he will fight for our people as we face the economic and social challenges of this time. And I know that the people of Britain do not give two damns about Whitelaw and his pompous displays. Because our people are struggling, and now is not the time for political plays and maneuvering. Now is the time to cut it out with the political back-and-forths and come together in the name of Britain's people, the proper governance of our social democracy, and ensuring that all are guaranteed prosperity in our nation. This vote of no confidence is a blatant political display, distracting our Parliament from what matters, the people of this nation, in order to focus on uncomfortable language from the Prime Minister. I oppose it fully, and I ask that we agree to end this insanity and get back to work helping the people of Britain!"

Callaghan, Jenkins, and a number of other moderate Labour MPs will campaign among the Liberals and among moderate Conservatives against the vote. They will paint the situation as Callaghan did in his speech - a vote of no confidence is a danger and distraction to Westminster's ability to properly govern. In this troubling time, a vote of no confidence is a destructive, distracting, and dividing thing, and this will be the focus of moderate efforts to combat it.

Margaret Thatcher delivers speech in support of Heath and the Motion of No Confidence

image.thumb.png.ae9f1f659a94aa6e08728da59b0dba7a.png

"Ladies and Gentleman, proud conservatives and Brittons, I have just gotten off the phone with Mr. Heath to congratulate him on his re-election as leader. While it was not the result we wanted, the Tories can certainly be said to be in better shape than the Marxists-excuse me, Labour. It is the policy of all conservatives to support the Leader of the Opposition now more than ever as he leads against what will surely be the most tireless onslaught against freedom and Capitalism in this nation's history. Be it then our greatest duty to be stalwart defenders of the values that bind our party and this country together. The British people did not elect a Quasi-Marxist Socialist Prime Minister, but it seems the Politburo at the Labour Party headquarters has made that choice for them. This simply cannot be. That is why I will be proudly voting in favor of the motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister and will be tirelessly campaigning to put the Tories back into Number 10 and consolidate the position of the common sense Britton, he who simply wants to do business, be free, and left alone.

Thank you all and May God Bless you!"

Peter Shore slams vote of no confidence while rallying the Labour base

“Ladies and gentlemen, what we are seeing today by the Conservatives is a blatant power grab in going against the will of the people, the majority of the citizens want to see a Labour government and Whitelaw is trying to force an election when the pro have spoken, but I give the Tories this promise, if you force an election get ready to feel the wrath of the people because we are ready to fight for what the people of what this country wants and you’re fighting every step of the way to go against the will of the people. Great shame! I will be voting against the vote of confidence and advise all my colleagues to vote no, that includes my good friends on the other side of the aisle who want to work with us to pass legislation that outlet people desperately need wherever their party may be.”

Ed Heath responds to Peter Shore's Comments in a Press Conference

heath.thumb.jpg.da8db411e870f504506d3a50e7b680f1.jpg

"My fellow citizens, I come here today to address the recent comments made by Mr. Peter Shore of the Labour Party. Mr. Shore claims that calling for an election is a 'blatant power-grab.' The hypocrisy is so evident people! Is calling for an election in this nation after our former Prime Minister resigned a 'power grab?' I'm under the impression that Mr. Shore misspoke in this instance! Perhaps he along with the Prime Minister know based on their internal polling that they're in to lose in a landslide! The people of the United Kingdom don't want a Prime Minister that endorses Marxism! That's ludicrous! And now they're saying that calling for an election is a power grab? What a load of non-sense folks! I along with many others called upon the Prime Minister to call an election, to give him a mandate, or to return that mandate to the Conservative Party. There was no intention whatsoever of 'power grabbing' when I asked that. Now as we call for a motion of no confidence, we simply have no choice! Because right now, we have a Prime Minister who believes letting the PEOPLE decide who gets to be in 10th Downing Street, is a power grab. It's a load of Marxist nonsense folks. And it's a shame!"

Liberal Chief Whip David Steel Addresses Reporters in Westminster

He answers a question about the pending vote of no confidence that has been tabled by the Conservatives against Prime Minister Benn.

"Yes, yes, that is all the talk these days up here, isn't it?" Steel chuckled a little bit. "It's my conclusion, and the consensus among my Liberal colleagues, that we will support this motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Benn. Labour has a knife-edge majority, that Benn wasn't elected under. It is my opinion that the people of this country, and some Labourites that are more preferential towards liberalism, as we are, will not support this government. If Prime Minister Benn truly believes that he can win a majority of his own, he will have no troubles calling an election right this minute! Us Liberals are completely ready for such an occasion. Good day." He ends the questions and heads off to attend supper with his family.

Privately, Steel and other Liberals are lobbying moderate Labourites to make the plunge and join the Liberals, and promise hefty campaign help to help them keep their seats under a Liberal banner. He says that they will be surely allowed to run for their seats again under a Liberal ticket. He focuses upon that they will stand a better chance with moderate Liberals than the radical Labour party it has turned into.

Reginald Maudling gives a speech in support of the Motion of No Confidence139 Reginald Maudling Photos and Premium High Res Pictures - Getty Images

"My fellow friends and countrymen. I come to you this day, and say that we must rally in support of Mr. Heath, and in support of the motion of no confidence introduced by Mr. Whitelaw. At this point, the people of Britain need to have their voices heard at the ballot box, rather than being forced to watch a government in which they had no input in creating force upon them policies which seek not to benefit the people, but to benefit the crooks behind the scenes. I ask you directly, the people of Britain: don't you want to have your voices heard? You want to speak loudly to the people of the Labour party, and you want to tell them now and tell them loudly: "we will not stand by silently and watch as you divulge the leftists of this nation while simultaneously spitting on the will of the people!" Henceforth, all of my supporters within the confines of Parliament will be voting in favor of the motion of no confidence, and I will spend every day forward making sure that it passes, that all of you can have the right to go out and vote for a new Prime Minister.

UUP Leader Harry West supports the Motion of No Confidence

Harry West, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party holds a press conference in Belfast.

"It's clear to me the Prime Minister has made comments, which the vast majority in this country would not support. It is therefore legitimate to give the choice back to the people again. We need to know if the Benn cabinet is supported by the cabinet. My guess is that it is not, and the UUP is committed to campaign on behalf of ousting the Prime Minister and his far-left following."

Leader of the Opposition Edward Heath Comments on the Vote of No Confidence

wfzj2vdaj0cc0xr5upcr.thumb.jpg.0893dca85f64bdba814859f4f7c00e64.jpg

"My fellow Brittons, Conservatives, and citizens of Her Majesty's Government. I am deeply saddened by the result of the recent vote of no confidence against the Prime Minister. A man who had his cabinet ally Mr. Shore, say unto you, 'calling for an election is a power grab.' The current Prime Minister is a man who will sacrifice the very foundation of the United Kingdom itself! This is a Prime Minister who believes that just because he barely won a Leadership election, means he has a mandate for his 1 seat majority in Parliament! To enact the most disastrous policies we've ever seen. What saddens me even more is that only a handful of Labour MP's stood up. To be fair, I don't blame many of them, they know the consequences of a vote like this. But to those in the Labour Party who were once seen as pragmatic individuals, the ones who were once in control of that party, have now been cast aside in favor of radicalism. It is deeply troublesome. My fellow Brittons, the Conservative Party will fight as hard as we ever have against what is going to be a long, tumultuous, 4 years. The Conservative Party will always remain the party of sound policies, with experienced hands forming them. I hope all the folks watching at home right now are praying for our country, because by God, we are going to most certainly need it. To those in leadership of the Labour Party who seek to isolate us, we in the Conservatives will integrate, we will continue to advocate for fair policies on the international scale, and we will always stand with our allies against the evil empires of the Soviet Union. Whether that be in Europe, or the United States. If the Prime Minister dare touches these relationships, and isolates us from the international community, I promise you, in 1979, there will be hell to pay. Thank you all, and God Bless. Please pray for our nation."

Liberal Leader David Steel Addresses Members After the Vote

Meeting Expected to focus on upcoming goals

Steel works with several Liberal politicians to work on groups of ideas that they can tackle at the next parliamentary session, focused upon a few different ideas. They hope to get them implemented with the Labour majority government, but begin to sow the seeds of potential by-election victories that are typically strong for the Liberals. The Liberals focus on a key idea that they hope will win them seats in the neglected areas of the United Kingdom: Devolution.

The Liberals are strong in Scotland, and have always held their own in Wales as well. They announce a policy plank based off of referendums in each of the four nations about their own parliaments with devolved powers. They believe by getting ahead of the issue they can turn votes in Scotland and Wales into lifelong Liberals.

The Liberals affirm their strong belief in proportional representation as the best way to represent the United Kingdom.

They continue their strong pro-Europeanism as the first major party in Britain to push to join the European Economic Community.

Liberals back strong local control and local affairs being a component of national policy.

The Liberal Party continues their strong internationalist focus with a particular closeness with the United States.

Liberals support increased funding in education and youth in the UK.

Edward Heath Slams Labour Economic Plan as 'ludicrous.' Announces Amendment proposals and full opposition if Labour intends to not compromise.

On the Parliament floor, the Leader of the Opposition would be called by the Speaker. "The Leader of the Opposition will be heard!"

Heath would stand, "Thank you Mr. Speaker."

"While I am sure the intentions of the Prime Minister's economic plan are well, it's ideas and execution are already doomed for failure."

Jeers and cheers would ensue, the Speaker clamoring for order.

"I've noticed as the Prime Minister has taken office, there's been a lot of distaste for the TRUTH around here. Well, here's the truth."

"Let's start off with the tax increases. While increasing taxes on high-income earners sounds well on paper, in times of deep recession such as this, it is simply implausible. The best way to uplift the nation out of a recession is by taking more money from those who create British jobs? Pay our workers? What is the Prime Minister thinking?!?! In times like these we must avoid drastic tax increases, we must allow things to level out, we must create the opportunities to get our economy back on track by incentivizing all Brittons! Those in the small business in particular.

"He then wants to impose financial regulations on our banks?! More like trojan horse for nationalization of all banks!"

"The Prime Minister also intends to impose tariffs on importations. From a man who claims to be for the working class, he proposes a tariff that will gradually raise the cost of consumer goods all across the United Kingdom? Hypocrisy!"

"I greatly fear what's to come in these proposals, and I will be proposing the following amendments, and calling upon the Labour leader to reach out to the other side in the name of proper governance! In the name of the British people! Although, his administration appears to have already shown contempt for allowing the will of the British people to be heard."

The Amendments/Proposal would go as followed:

Removal of all new taxes proposed by the Prime Minister. Includes tax raise on the wealthy, mansion tax, and wealth tax.

- Reduction and removal of import tariffs. Free trade. Imposing tariffs will hurt the British worker, and alienate our friends in Europe.

- Status Quo on regulation of the financial sector and banks. No 'trojan horse' for nationalization.

- Spending on education, small business, and the work force can remain, but balance these increases in spending with cuts to welfare. No cuts to health.

- Allow Private Companies a role in  the rebuilding of British infrastructure. Private companies will provide just as good if not better jobs than a Government run works-program.

"My honorable colleagues, these are common sense proposals and allow room for common sense solutions. It's up to the Prime Minister to listen to those around him. If he has no intention of compromise, then I am forced to encourage all members of the Conservative Party, and others, to oppose the bill!"

OOC: I should clarify, that isn't an actual bill, its just the Labour Party announcing what we plan on doing during our term, and only in regards to economic policy. You're perfectly allowed to criticize, and react to the promises, but I felt in necessary to make it clear that the post you are referencing, is not an actual legislative proposal.

Liberal Response (short for now)

At a chance meeting with some reporters, David Steel says that a red line for the party is an introduction of a tariff between European neighbors. He says that being a part of the EEC means being a good, cooperative member. He also replies that he is strongly against tariffs against close allies like the United States. He says he will wait for further announcements from Number 10 before he makes a deliberation one way or another, but any inclusion of tariffs against European countries will be an automatic nay from his party. He also encourages the government to take a look at how they intend to pay for the various plans they are proposing, and says he is concerned about inflation down the road. He ends the press meeting before long.

Tony Benn Blasts 'Unpatriotic' Opposition During a Speech in Liverpool

tony_benn_in_liverpool.thumb.jpg.bd309be487e11b1bdea875df68d896da.jpg

(Benn Pictured With Supporters In Liverpool Before Speech)

"May I first thank the Liverpool District Labour Party, for inviting me here today to speak before you all, and let me also thank my honorable colleague Eric Heffer, for his lovely introduction. Now, at this time of great crisis, and I won't insult you all, by claiming there is no such crisis, we must look for solutions. Solutions to these kinds of wide-reaching crises are never easy. In point of fact, it is far easier to criticize the doers, and the people who are attempting to find solutions to our current problems, than it is to actually come up with workable solutions. Of course, the easy way seems popular among the opposition, because despite our party being the only one in parliament to propose an actual plan to deal with the crisis, both Conservative, and the Liberal parties, have resorted to wild speculations about our so-called, true intentions, and to a commitment to stonewalling any of our plans to actually fix our economy. They attack me, they attack our government, and they attack our party. These attack do not bother me for, as the great liberator of India once said, "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.", and by how hard they're fighting, I take it we're quite close to victory. No, these attacks do not bother me, but what does bother me, is their incessant assault, on the British people, and their nation. They attack our proposed tariff plan, claiming that we can not survive, without relying on Europe, or America. That we would become a 'tiny island' stripped of any influence over the North Atlantic. They claim that we cannot go it alone, and that we must open our borders to the influences of international finance, with no control on it whatsoever if we are to remain a world power. Their supposed Europeanism is nothing but imperialism with an inferiority complex. They want to instill a sense of defeatism, and loss of confidence in the British people. They do this, because a defeated people, and nation, is easier to govern. It is they, who has allowed European bureaucrats to run amok, interfering with our fishing, and agricultural industries. We, the Labour party, on the other hand, believe in Britain! We believe in our ability to be a world power, with a first class economy, and the ability to influence world affairs, without being made slaves to Brussels, and Washington! We also believe in co-operation with Europe, but that is the key word, co-operation! We will not bow down, and allow unelected bureaucrats, and business men to dictate every piece of our economy. We will approach the entire world, with open hands, and closed legs, and we will come to the negotiating table an equal partner, not as some third rate shadow of a nation."

Shadow First Secretary of State Margaret Thatcher responds to Prime Minister Benn on behalf of Tories

image.thumb.png.1cc9b3c93f9b7f07fb0f56eab1fe8056.png

"Good evening my fellow Brittons. I want to start by personally thanking the Small Business Association here in London for their warmest of welcomes. It is no mistake that I come here before all of you, hard working men and women, exemplars of the common Britton, he who wishes to do business and be left alone, to be free. Earlier today, the Prime Minister found himself in Liverpool. By the way he was speaking you'd have thought he'd have come straight from Moscow. I could hardly believe my ears as I heard an isolationist Prime Minister, intent on removing Britain's power from the world, call spirited opposition to his collectivist diatribe "unpatriotic". My mind was subsequently blown once more as this unelected leader, hand-chosen by the Politburo of the Labour Party, railed against unelected bureaucrats. Now, do not misconstrue me, I am all for bashing unelected bureaucrats. But that's exactly why we attempted to call an election on Mr. Benn in the first place!"

"Mr. Benn made many of assertions today. Most conspicuos among them, I think, was the baseless claim that we Tories have no plan to deal with the current crisis. This is simply not true. Step One, throw out the government who created it! Once that has been accomplished the rest is elementary. We don't micromanage the economy into wellness and we don't legislate the people into liberty. We allow the industrious and proud people of this industrious and proud nation to show the world exactly what it means to be British. Mr. Benn fundamentally fails to realize that Parliament cannot fix the economy because the economy is not one big machine to be tuned by an engineering Cabinet and domineering Prime Minister. Industry and Business are not toys for politicians to poke and prod and throw on the ground when they don't get their way. No, your hard-earned money is more important than the whims of politicians. Your right to do business and provide for your family is more insured than the emotional tirades of unelected bureaucrats and Politburos. The business of the British people, after all, is business. When this Socialist government, and do not make any mistake, they are Socialist, attempts to block trade with our European partners and sever ties with our American allies, they are making the life of each and every Britton harder. They are actively destroying the influence that the British nation has on the world."

"Mr. Benn, interestingly, spent hours raving against Washington and Brussels. Attacking the Free and Western Worlds which have defeated Fascism and are currently embroiled in a life or death struggle with Communism. Mr. Benn, allow me to invoke the words of a great conservative leader who has come before me. You speak of Washington and Brussels, you excoriate them. But what of Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia. What of all those great cities which lie behind the Iron Curtain. What of Moscow? What of Beijing? Not a single word did the Prime Minister devote to explaining how he would stand up to the Soviet threat.  Not a single word did the Prime Minister use to explain how important it is that Britain remain a bulwark of democracy, freedom and capitalism. And not a single word did Mr. Benn allot to re-affirming our position as a global power willing to oppose at every interval that Communist Menace which lies just beyond that Iron Curtain. No, instead Mr. Benn insulted our allies and attempted to divide Britain from the rest of the Free World, knocking us out of the crucial fight with Communism and giving Comrade Brezhnev and his cronies a leg up over dominating not just Eastern but Western Europe. I suppose we must consider it a love letter from one Politburo to another! Signed, Comrade Tony."

"Britain has an irreplaceable role to play not just in the fight against Communism but in the Global Market. When our Prime Minister believes that somehow cooperating with the European Community would destroy our world class economy, he exposes himself as someone who does not have very much faith in Britain. No matter how he professes it, the fearmongering and divisive politics peddled by the far-left arise from a profound lack of faith not just for Britain and her people but for our social bedrocks and system of government. Our very way of life. Mr. Benn's isolationist prescriptions would dig Britain futher into the hole of the military and diplomatic unilateral disarmament that has previously spelled disaster for this country. We do not propose we integrate into some United States of Europe, rather that we band together with the forces of Freedom and defeat the menace which looms over every single free soul in the world. And that it be Britain who leads the fight against tyranny just as we did in our fight against Fascism."

"There is a strength and stability which only the Tories have provided in this nation's history. That reality has never been more apparent. Today, the choice is clearer than ever before. That choice between freedom and government control, between Totalitarianism and Democracy, between a Proud Britain, leaders of the Free World, or a Toady of Communist Russia. The Prime Minister is in well over his head. This government is in well over its head. And I can think of nothing more patriotic than to point out that simple truth. We will never let collectivist Soviet-sympathizers get away with robbing this nation of its inalienable spirit. It is time for total top-to-toe reform. It is time to renew Britain's pride, our strength, and our self-responsibility. Mr. Benn and his unelected band of far-left Nomenklatura can not and worse they will not. Unfortunately for them, the proud people of Britain can. And together, each and every individual one of us will."

"Thank you all and my God Bless you!"

UUP's Harry West opposes the Labour Party's economical policy outline.

''What we see here are extreme measures, that will hurt our economy bitterly. Import tariffs are absolutely uncalled for and I call on the Conservative and Liberal faction to oppose such plans by all means,'' said West during an Interview for a local Radio station in County Antrim.

James Callaghan Throws Support Behind Labour Economic Agenda, Provides Defense:

At an official press conference, Labour Deputy Leader James Callaghan will speak on the newly released economic agenda from his party, declaring, "This economic agenda was created to help satisfy the needs of our economy and people. If we are to pull ourselves out of our current crisis, we must be able to place the working people of Britain first, and that is what is what this agenda hopes to do. If formulated into legislation and passed, it would aggressively work to help build up our local and national production capacity, and would help bring our people lowered prices, more specialized work, and an economy built to last into the coming decades. This is a unity agenda for both the Labour Party and the United Kingdom, and in the face of the great economic turmoil we have experienced over this past decade, this agenda is something we all must gather around in the name of our working people. Because despite Tory hootering and hollering, this is a bipartisan agenda, designed to help bring our economy back from the brink and support the British people. The British people know that I more than anyone am one to value strong and trusting trade relations with our European partners. However, despite Tory deceptions, the proposed import taxes are necessary if we are to attempt to build up our economy and pull ourselves out of the current crisis, and I believe that relations with our European brothers may be maintained and allowed to further grow despite these tariffs. Thank you."

Liberals Outline Economic Plan

LADY STEEL on why she horrified her husband David and three children - and doesn't regret it one jot! | Daily Mail Online

Liberal leader David Steel delivers a more lengthy response on Labour's proposals and what he hopes to achieve with them.

"I was thoroughly disappointed with the level of outreach from the Labour Party." Steel tells reporters at a press conference outside of Westminster. "It can't be bipartisan, as the deputy PM said, if you don't reach out to any party beyond the SDLP. Mr. Benn's speech thoroughly terrified members of my party who believe in multilateralism - every single one of us does. There are areas of compromise between the Liberal and Labour Party. But the way this Prime Minister has chosen to act - like a majority of 1 is a thumping endorsement from all corners of the UK, means that any Liberal votes for this economic farce is a slim chance. Mr. Benn did not say there would be no tariffs on our partners in the European Economic Community - which flies in the face of the very purpose of our entry into the group. In fact, he made every attempt to rationalize it!"

"We are no slaves to Washington, nor to Brussels." Steel continues. "But the kind of rhetoric that the Prime Minister employs about our closest allies  is completely reprehensible. I am thoroughly disappointed in the PM today, and this is just another reason why we supported the Vote of No Confidence. The Liberal party will never vote for proposals that antagonize our allies, while turning a blind eye to Moscow and those we should be truly fighting against. But that would require the Prime Minister to call out his red friends, which he is incapable of doing without a slight to Washington. We will not vote for this economic plan, and we will fight hard to make sure the British people know exactly what is being proposed here."
