vcczar
James Armstrong Jr of NY was a significant figure for a couple of years. A lot of people don't know this but he was aiming to knock Monroe out of the 1816 election. He as meddlesome and vindictive as Hamilton, Burr, Wilkinson, and a bunch of other early American politicians. Armstrong hoped to be a victorious general in the War of 1812 and use that to boost him to the presidency in 1816. He then directed the war for about a year, often bumping heads with Monroe and trying to undermine Monroe (who was Sec of State). The burning of Washington DC killed his presidential ambitions. He blamed others. He somehow lived into the 1840s. Here are his actions: Armstrong Jr, James 1804 Appt Amb to France by Jefferson Armstrong Jr, James 1812 Made brig gen and placed in charge of defense of NY Armstrong Jr, James 1813 Confirmed to replace Eustis as Sec of War for Madison Armstrong Jr, James 1813 Seen as most likely rival to Monroe for 1816 pres nomination Armstrong Jr, James 1814 Forced to resign following the Burning of Washington DC
