vcczar
Harry F Byrd Jr of VA inherited his father's senate seat. He also took over the Byrd Organization which had been the state's political machine, but it declined as segregation became more unpopular. He became an Independent. I don't know who he voted for in 1972, but I can't see him voting for McGovern. While not an action, it is noted that he voted for Romney in 2012. I don't know who he voted for in 2008. By 2012, his independent endorsement doesn't carry enough weight even in his own state to warrant an action. His actions: Byrd Jr, Harry F. 1970 Leaves Dem to become an Indep, following the decline of the Byrd Organization in VA Byrd Jr, Harry F. 1971 Authors the Byrd Amendments Byrd Jr, Harry F. 1976 First Senator to ever win election and reelection as an Independent Byrd Jr, Harry F. 1980 Endorses Reagan, despite being an Ind that caucuses w/ Democrats Byrd Jr, Harry F. 1982 Publicly defends the pro-segregationists views from the 50's and 60's as means to prevent violence
