vcczar
MH Carpenter of WI started out as a Democrat. Unlike many Democrats from his state, he seemed to only support emancipation as a means to weaken the South rather than for a moral cause. He was considered a leading Constitutional expert and a great orator during his time, but seems to have never been seriously considered for the SC. He jumped to the GOP mainly because he'd never get elected as a Dem in WI after 1861. He supported Lincoln but routinely considered him an idiot, at least before his reelection. He strongly supported Grant and even defended scandals in his admin (could be an action, but I don't have a specific public speech for a year). His actions: Carpenter, Matthew H 1860 Votes Douglas, seeing Lincoln as honest but incompetent and sectional Carpenter, Matthew H 1861 War Democrat, approving of Lincoln wartime policies Carpenter, Matthew H 1864 Votes Lincoln in support of the Union Carpenter, Matthew H 1867 Switches to GOP to run for US Sen on Grant's urging Carpenter, Matthew H 1876 Leads defense for Belknap at impeachment trial Carpenter, Matthew H 1876 Takes part in analyzing votes in contested 1876 election Carpenter, Matthew H 1880 Backs Grant at GOP Conv with other Stalwarts

To be fair, weakening the South is a moral cause in some ways. 1
