vcczar
DeWitt Clinton of NY was groomed in politics by his uncle George Clinton, who became VP. The younger Clinton was much more moderate than his uncle, something of a hybrid w/ Federalists. You can think him for NY's population growth because of the Erie Canal, which Van Buren opposed ideologically, but who probably was glad it happened. Clinton-Van Buren were the two dominant forces in the NY power struggle in the 1820s. Clinton's early death gave Van Buren a lot of power. Clinton was a lot like Ted Kennedy was in 1984 and 1988, the guy who might have had the nomination had he run. In Clinton's case this was 1824 and 1828. His actions: Clinton, DeWitt 1812 Inherits VP George Clinton's Jeffersonian faction on the death of his uncle, becoming a new power player Clinton, DeWitt 1812 Fusion Nominee for Pres, gaining Northern Jeffersonians and Federalists Clinton, DeWitt 1817 Promotes and presides during construction of the Erie Canal as Gov of NY Clinton, DeWitt 1824 Expected to run for president, but is compelled to run for Gov to stop Van Buren's faction from taking NY Clinton, DeWitt 1828 Dies unexpectedly while as Gov of NY; considered potential anti-Jackson frontrunner in pres election
