He broke with Radical Republicans and joined Pres. Johnson and the Dem Party. This obviously killed his political future. He would support the Lib Reps in 1872, but Democratic candidates for pres thereafter. His actions: Cowan, Edgar 1860 Backs Cameron for GOP Pres Cowan, Edgar 1861 Helps convince Lincoln to select Cameron for Sec of War when Lincoln is hesitant Cowan, Edgar 1863 Authors Enrollment Act, which updated the military draft to allow paid substitutes Cowan, Edgar 1866 Opposes Civil Rights Act of 1866 Cowan, Edgar 1866 Opposes 14th Amendment because opposes birthright citizenship, but mainly for anti-Romani (gypsy) reasons Cowan, Edgar 1866 Defeated for reelection to US Sen for supporting Johnson's Reconstruction Plan Cowan, Edgar 1867 Switches from GOP to Dem; Nom as Amb to Austria blocked for his support for Johnson Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
