JD Cox of OH was a civil war general who went on to become a reformist Republican. He was another cabinet officer that was so good at finding corruption that Grant wanted him out, not because he opposed the idea of clearing corruption, but because it made his administration look bad because of all the corruption.

His actions:

Cox, Jacob D 1862 Promoted to Maj Gen after Antietam
Cox, Jacob D 1865 Elected GOP Gov of OH, but supports Johnson's Recon Plan and opposes federal black suffrage
Cox, Jacob D 1869 Confirmed Sec of Interior by Grant after Boutswell declines
Cox, Jacob D 1869 Opposes Grant's plan to annex Santo Domingo
Cox, Jacob D 1870 Resigns when Grant doesn't support him in handling a case of land fraud
Cox, Jacob D 1871 Helps found the Liberal Republicans
Cox, Jacob D 1872 Declines to run for Lib Rep pres; Back CF Adams for Lib Rep Republicans; rejoins GOP when Greeley is nominated
