Dawes got his start in politics as the lead campaigner for McKinley in IL during the 1896 election. His 1912 composition ended up being the melody for a top of the charts UK song in the 1950s. My great-grandfather served in Newton D. Baker's War Department w/ Dawes. While Dawes's non-combative role carried the rank of Brig Gen, my ancestor's role carried the rank of Major. Both were Republicans working for the Wilson admin.
