Rep. Dingell (MI-D) served longer than any other US Rep in history. He used to be a moderate on both abortion and Civil Rights in the 1960s and before. On the latter, he supported Civil Rights, but objected to forced busing to desegregate schools.

His actions:

Dingell Jr, John 1965 Major role in getting Medicare passed
Dingell Jr, John 1972 Major role in Clean Water Act
Dingell Jr, John 1973 Major role in Endangered Species Act
Dingell Jr, John 1981 Influential House Commerce Committee Chair. Served 14 years during Reaganomics and early Clinton
Dingell Jr, John 1990 Major role in Clean Air Act
Dingell Jr, John 1999 A lead voice opposing Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, removing Glass-Steagall
Dingell Jr, John 2006 Argues Bush violated the Constitution by signing the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005
Dingell Jr, John 2007 Influential House Commerce Committee Chair. Served early Great Recession (served 14 years previously; for 16 years total)
Dingell Jr, John 2010 Major role in Obamacare
Dingell Jr, John 2015 Retires from the US House after almost 50 years (the record)
