JA Dix of NY is a rare Democrat that flipped to the GOP in 1872. About this time, you start seeing reformist Republicans going Democrat and few Democrats going to the GOP. Dix had a lengthy career, running for Mayor of NYC in 1876, when he was 78 years old. That's about 98 in 21st century years!

His actions:

Dix, John Adams 1846 at Polk's behest offers Benton delegate plan
Dix, John Adams 1848 Joins Van Buren as a Free Soil Democrat, before returning to the Democrats soon after the election
Dix, John Adams 1861 Confirmed Sec of Treasury for Buchanan in final months of presidency
Dix, John Adams 1861 War Democrat; Appt Major General of volunteers, despite being in his 60s w/o field command experience
Dix, John Adams 1861 Helps prevent MD secession by arresting six members of the MD legislature, preventing a secession vote
Dix, John Adams 1863 Resigns from military to b/c pres of Pacific Union RR during construction of 1st transcontinental RR
Dix, John Adams 1866 Appt Amb to France by Johnson
Dix, John Adams 1872 Switches to the GOP permanently amid brief Democrat collapse in 1872
