GF Edmunds (VT-R) was a major Republican in the 1880s. He was considered a half-breed, and the favored one of Theodore Roosevelt. JG Blaine never forgave Edmunds when many of Edmund's supporters went for Cleveland ("Mugwumps") in the general electiong of 1884. Edmunds personally supported Blaine, but that wasn't enough apparently. 

His actions:

Edmunds, George F 1868 Introduces bill to create a non-partisan framework for handling impeachment

Edmunds, George F 1872 Influential Senate Judiciary Committee Chair. Served later Reconstruction. Serves a total of 17 years, with a two year interruption
Edmunds, George F 1877 Part of the Commission that decided contested pres election for Hayes
Edmunds, George F 1880 Rep Pres Cand
Edmunds, George F 1882 Offered SC spot by Arthur when Conkling declined, but he declines as well
Edmunds, George F 1882 Edmunds Act strengthens law against polygamy
Edmunds, George F. 1884 candidate for GOP pres nom (favored cand of Theodore Roosevelt)
Edmunds, George F 1885 Senate Republican Conference Chairman
Edmunds, George F. 1890 a shaper of Sherman Antitrust Act
