He started out as a supporter of Huey P Long, but became more conservative through the course of FDR's presidency. Like most Southern Dem politicians, he was openly racists and supported rhetoric that incited violence against black people. He opposed all Civil Rights Acts. His actions: Ellender, Allen J 1937 Supports FDR's court-packing scheme Ellender, Allen J 1946 Defends Bilbo for inciting violence against blacks Ellender, Allen J 1949 Wagner-Taft-Ellender housing bill Ellender, Allen J 1955 Influential Senate Agriculture Committee Chair. Serves for 16 straight years. Had served 2 years, starting in 1951. Total 18 years.
