vcczar
Mike Espy (MS-D) might be the last MS Dem of any note. He had a promising career, but scandal knocked him out for two decades or more. His vote for Barbour was clearly with future election in mind. He was competitive for the US Sen in both 2018 and 2020 in a state that would otherwise vote 60%+ for a GOP candidate. His actions: Espy, Mike 1987 1st black US Rep of MS since Reconstruction Espy, Mike 1993 Confirmed Sec of Agric for Clinton, the first black person to hold this office Espy, Mike 1994 Resigns b/c minor scandal (receiving improper gifts) Espy, Mike 1998 Acquitted of 30 charges in corruption/gifts trial related to his resignation, allowing him to continue political career Espy, Mike 2007 Crosses party lines to support Gov. Barbour's reelection in MS Espy, Mike 2018 Loses close election for US Sen of MS (run-off) despite running in heavily GOP state
vcczar
I'm about 55% favorable. I think the scandal was relatively minor, but 30 small charges do add up, even if he's acquitted. It's easy for politicians and powerful people to be acquitted.
