Thomas Ewing of OH was something of a moderate Whig and Republican. He's best known as the foster father and father-in-law of General Sherman. Both the general, and Sen. John Sherman, were probably helped in their respective careers by Ewing.

His actions:

Ewing, Thomas 1836 resolution to annul Jackson's Specie Circular
Ewing, Thomas 1841 Confirmed Sec of Treasury for Harrison
Ewing, Thomas 1841 Resigns in protest from Tyler cabinet w/ much of the cabinet
Ewing, Thomas 1849 Confirmed Sec of Interior for Taylor
Ewing, Thomas 1850 His daughter marries his foster son, William T Sherman
Ewing, Thomas 1861 At peace conference to try and resolve secession
Ewing, Thomas 1868 Appt Sec of War by Johnson but Senate refused to act on it b/c Johnson's firing of Stanton
