vcczar
HS Foote is one of the more interesting Southerners during his time. One action not mentioned, because he was in the CSA, is that he tried to escape back to the US but was captured and expelled from their legislature. His actions: Foote, Henry S. 1850 role in Compromise of 1850, at one pointing pulling a gun out directed at TH Benton and tackled on Sen floor Foote, Henry S. 1852 Defeats Jefferson Davis for Gov of MS on as Unionist Party (pro-Union Democrats) Foote, Henry S. 1854 Resigns as Gov of MS to move to CA and joins the Know Nothing Party (almost made US Sen for CA) Foote, Henry S. 1856 Supports Fillmore Know Nothing bid for president Foote, Henry S. 1861 Having moved to TN, joins CSA, joining their legislature Foote, Henry S. 1875 Switches from Dem to GOP, supporting Civil Rights
vcczar
I'll "forgive" him for being a Confederate since I think he sincerely regretted it. He was also not "into" slavery the way most Southern politicians were.

Pringles
The fact he defeated Davis is remarkable. However, Davis was not a popular politician.
