vcczar
James Forrestal is a rare politician who never joined a political party. He opposed creating the Department of Defense, thinking Department War and Navy should be separated. Some argue he was mentally collapsing in 1948 due to overwork. As a visual, one might compare him to say a Hall of Fame Quarterback who was stellar for a long time but the last couple of years they probably should't have stayed in the league. His actions: Forrestal, James 1944 Confirmed Sec of Navy for LBJ; last cabinet-level Sec of Navy Forrestal, James 1945 Role in crafting terms and rhetoric for Japanese surrender Forrestal, James 1947 Elevated to become the 1st ever Sec of Defense; confirmed for Truman Forrestal, James 1948 Opposes recognizing Israel as doing so will antagonize the Arab world, possibly push them closer to USSR Forrestal, James 1948 Is told by Rep pres nom Dewey that he will stay at Defense if Dewey elected Forrestal, James 1949 Compelled to resign for undermining Truman; kills himself a couple of months later
vcczar
I don't completely disfavor him. I'm just not a fan of Truman's foreign policy (outside of Humanitarianism). Forrestal played a big part in that.
