He, along with many Northern Democrats, switched parties during the Pierce admin over Kansas. Grow served only one term as Speaker before being defeated for his US Rep seat, but he might have presided over more legislation than most previous Speakers, considering it was over the course of the first two years of the Civil War. He stayed out of DC 32 years before making his return.
