Speaker Galusha Grow of PA ended up being the GOP Speaker despite having recently been a Democrat. He, along with many Northern Democrats, switched parties during the Pierce admin over Kansas. Grow served only one term as Speaker before being defeated for his US Rep seat, but he might have presided over more legislation than most previous Speakers, considering it was over the course of the first two years of the Civil War. He stayed out of DC 32 years before making his return.

His actions:

Grow, Galusha 1856 US Rep switches from Dem to GOP over slavery
Grow, Galusha 1857 Comes in second in Speaker election
Grow, Galusha 1858 Attacked by Rep. Keitt
Grow, Galusha 1861 Elected Speaker of the US House, serving during 1st half of the CW
Grow, Galusha 1862 Speaker who becomes the last incumbent to be defeated for reelection as US Rep until 1994
Grow, Galusha 1894 Fmr Speaker returns to US House after 30 year out of office
