Nikki Haley of SC is currently challenging Donald Trump for the GOP nomination, and might quite possibly be the only one with an outside chance of winning the nomination, however unlikely. Haley was seen as a future GOP nominee almost as soon as she became governor. This was partially due to her being a woman minority in a party that is stereotyped as not being the party for women and minorities.

Since the rise of Trump-MAGA she has been rather skillful in straddling the line of pre-Trump establishment GOP and Trump-MAGA. She also hasn't shied from opposing Trump, even while as his UN Amb, when she feels he's gone too far. I'm unsure if her resignation as UN Amb had more to do with her decision or Trump's decision. Even when she disagreed with Trump, she typically refused to villify Trump as can be seen in her rather tame negative reaction to the notorious Jan 6th insurrection. While not an action, she's already expressed that she will support Trump if he's the 2024 nominee.

His actions:

Haley, Nikki 2011 1st female Gov of SC, and the first Indian-American woman Gov in US history
Haley, Nikki 2012 Considered for VP by Romney, but states publicly she would decline such an offer
Haley, Nikki 2015 While as Gov of SC, calls for the removal of the Confederate flag at statehouse after Charleston church shooting
Haley, Nikki 2016 Supports Rubio and then Cruz for pres; reluctantly votes Trump in November
Haley, Nikki 2016 Considered for VP on the Trump ticket, but states she would decline being a VP
Haley, Nikki 2016 Attacked by Trump on social media after she calls for him to release his taxes and accuses him of now disavowing the KKK
Haley, Nikki 2017 Confirmed UN Amb for Trump, becoming the first Indian-American cabinet-level office holder
Haley, Nikki 2017 Opposes Trump's "Muslim ban" while serving as his UN Amb
Haley, Nikki 2017 Supports the rights of alleged Trump sex assault victims to be heard, contrary to Trump's wish
Haley, Nikki 2018 Withdraws US from UN Human Rights Council; soon resigns
Haley, Nikki 2021 Faults Trump's lack of leadership for Jan 6th insurrection but doesn't advocate impeachment
Haley, Nikki 2024 Rep Cand for Pres; 1st non-White woman to be a GOP pres cand

I'd obviously never support her, but she passes my Rubio test for being a potential president I'd tolerate.

Basically, anyone noticeably to the right of Marco Rubio is not tolerable. At that point their dangerous. Someone like Rubio and Haley could run the government, and while I wouldn't like it, I wouldn't have any domestic, economic, social, or judicial fears. I could also trust them to act rationally in a crisis. Of those remaining in the GOP primaries who are capable of making it to debates--only  Haley and Christie pass my Rubio test. Trump, DeSantis, and Ramaswamy do not.

My range of toleration is Bernie Sanders to Marco Rubio. My level of toleration for left-wing politicians closes when it becomes authoritarian (which really isn't left-wing because it's often counter to humanitarian government and humanitarian justice) or unscientific populism, like anti-vax (which really isn't left wing). For instance, Dennis Kucinich--once a favorite of mine--is outside of my range of tolerance for embracing RFK Jr anti-science policies. There's not a single left-wing politician who is authoritarian. I should note that COVID measures don't pass my authoritarian description because they were for an global/national emergency and were temporary and then removed as promised once the worst of the pandemic passed.

Yeah, I'm not gonna vote for her and don't like her policies, but I think we'd survive them at least.
