Sen. Jesse Helms (NC-R) is possibly the most influential politician in blurring the lines between church and state by injecting the Religious Right into GOP ideology.

Even if one thinks that was a good thing for America, you have to overlook his overt and active racism. His stance against Israel was possibly due to antisemitism. Had he been born 10 to 20 years earlier, he would have been a KKK member. He was also a misogynist and a bigot who wanted LGBT people to suffer during the AIDS Crisis. He opposed funding and research into AIDS, even if many victims weren't even gay, especially women and children with AIDS. There is no Christ-like lovingness to this guy, and he gives Christianity, social conservatism, Southerners, and the GOP a bad name. When I put together a list of the worst people to be US politicians (that have at least 5 actions), expect Helms to be one of them. The evidence below is often damning.

Can this be an action? 😛
