Harold Hughes of IA was something of a potential rising star, playing big roles in at least two conventions. In 1972, I figure he had a populism that would appeal to some voters who preferred Nixon to Humphrey.

His actions:

Hughes, Harold 1962 Switches from GOP to Dem just prior to successful Gov of IA election
Hughes, Harold 1964 Seconds LBJ's nom at Dem Conv
Hughes, Harold 1968 Gives nom speech for Eugene McCarthy at Dem Conv
Hughes, Harold 1970 Role in Drug Abuse and Control Act
Hughes, Harold 1972 Considered potential darkhorse candidate at Dem Conv; believed to be most electable in general by Gary Hart
Hughes, Harold 1974 Hughes-Ryan Act to regulate the CIA
