The Colin Powell love baffles me.  He's best known for lying to the UN to drag the US into an endless mideast war.

I selected him once, not because he's a great or notorious person, but because he's the first notable black general and the first black Sec of State ever. I'm not making my votes based on ethical or moral reasons, although I'll use that in a tie situation. That is to say, none of my votes are based off personal preference. It's based on the historical concept of "Greatness." For instance, Alexander, Napoleon, Stalin, etc. are "Great" but they're also very awful--some more awful than great. Great is a misleading word because Great is the upgrade to Good, but historical great and historical good is different from social, moral, or ethical great and good. In this poll, I found Toni Morrison greater than Colin Powell, primarily because she's one of the canonical great later 20th century/early 21st century authors--black or white.

To be pedantic, since you left nationality completely exempt - outside of Africa and the Caribbean, and Black generals in Medieval Islamic armies. Sorry, couldn't resist. 😛

To be pedantic in return, the poll is in regards to "African-Americans," not "Afro-Carribean" or "Afro-Asian."
