Rodja
I love everything by Leonard Cohen whose lyrics always have deep meanings that really strike a chord with me,Everybody Knows would be my favorite though.I also love Sinatra's My Way,that lyrics always hit me.
vcczar
Probably not my #1 lyrics, but probably in my top 10 is this song "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Deathcab for Cutie. It's funny because I would hear this song in coffee shops and not really pay attention to the lyrics for years. However, after paying attention to the lyrics, it's probably the best non-religious song on the prospect of the death of a loved one and of what an agnostic things of the "afterlife." I'd say the singer is agnostic because it allows for the possibility of a heaven, but it is decidedly non-religious. If any hint of religious, it at least shows a preference of following the lover, wherever she goes, to being in a heaven with a God. Very beautiful song: Love of mineSomeday you will dieBut I'll be close behindI'll follow you into the dark No blinding lightOr tunnels, to gates of whiteJust our hands clasped so tightWaiting for the hint of a spark If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfiedIlluminate the no's on their vacancy signsIf there's no one beside you when your soul embarksThen I'll follow you into the dark In Catholic school, as vicious as Roman ruleI got my knuckles bruised by a lady in blackAnd I held my tongue as she told me "Son, fear is the heart of love, " so I never went back And if Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfiedIlluminate the no's on their vacancy signsIf there's no one beside you when your soul embarksThen I'll follow you into the dark You and me have seen everything to seeFrom Bangkok to CalgaryAnd the soles of your shoes are all worn downThe time for sleep is nowBut it's nothing to cry about'Cause we'll hold each other soonIn the blackest of rooms And if Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfiedIlluminate the no's on their vacancy signsIf there's no one beside you when your soul embarksThen I'll follow you into the dark Then I'll follow you into the dark
DakotaHale
Bob Dylan is the greatest songwriter of all time — even has a Nobel prize in literature for it. Any of his songs would have a viable candidate. 1

Pringles
I've got way too many songs and writers I like. But there's some names/bands that come to mind that are ALWAYS consistently good. Elton John Paul McCartney Supertramp The Police Bruce Springsteen Billy Joel Rush Eminem Biggie Smalls Hank Williams and Hank Jr. John Denver Frank Sinatra Dean Martin All of the other OG's. 😛 Edited August 10, 2021 by Pringles

Fbarbarossa
As for song lyrics from me, I'm quite torn. I'll have to hark to my being a fan of hardcore/metal. Jumping Ship by Counterparts has some nice uplifting lyrics, though from the tone of the song you wouldn't guess it.

Edouard
Fav Anglophone one Beside those two, my favourite modern artist is probably Katty Perry I very much liked modern artist but the best to me is probably her, I like lyrics of Rise and Roar but also the meaning of fireworks I like Lady Gaga but more for her songs than her lyrics (she is better at the first than the second) however I do love both music and lyrics of Born this Way which is a justified hit because it has both dynamic notes and good lyrics (unlike several of her songs which are bop but without good lyrics like Poker face / Just Dance / Bad Romance) Edited August 11, 2021 by Edouard
vcczar
My favorite lyrics have generally come from three bands, all of which are similar in that they are a lot more vocab-heavy and experimental than most bands. Neutral Milk Hotel (I recommend the song "Aeroplane Over the Sea") The Decemberists (I recommend the song "Mariner's Revenge Song") Of Montreal (I recommend the song "Gronlandic Edit") If I owned a coffee shop, they'd all play daily at some point. Lyricists from other genres I recommend are Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, the Beatles, Elliott Smith, Grandaddy, AC Newman, the New Pornographers, Sleater-Kinney, Rainer Maria, Serafin, and I'd list others but I gotta go. MrPotatoTed
I have a lot of favorite songs, mostly thanks to the lyrics. But here's one I listen to whenever I'm interviewing for a promotion/new job -- "Loser", by Garfunkel & Oates. As someone who tried a lot of big ideas and failed at all of them before I finally struck gold, I really love this message. You didn’t do it, didn’t reach your goal,Your heart is broken; you’re an asshole,In the end you didn’t have what it takes...So here’s to you, and your huge mistakes. You’re humiliated, hollowed out, and exhausted; You were in the ring fighting the fight -- and you lost it!This isn’t your time, this wasn’t for you...At least you did everything you could do...You’re a loser, but a dreamer; You’re tired, but you’re strong; You’re going on no evidence,You don’t listen to common sense,You went all in -- and you were wrong...You are such a loser -- good for you. It’s something that a lot of people can’t do,Trying is hard, that’s why people don’t do it,Losing is hard, they can’t make it through it,But not you...You are such a loser...You are such a loser...Here’s to you...‘Cause you deserve a cheering section too. Throw your heart at it, so what if you break it?You know now that you’re strong enough to take it;Don’t let it break you, don’t let them break you;Fake it, keep going 'til you have a breakthrough! Icarus is bullshit, that's why it's called "myth"ology;People can’t stand genius without an apology; Fuck that, fuck them, go get what you wanna get;Let them stay at home and comment on the internet...You’re a loser, but a dreamerYou’re tired, but you’re strongYou’re going on no evidenceYou don’t listen to common senseYou went all in, and you were wrongYou are such a loser, good for youIt’s something that a lot of people can’t doTrying is hard, that’s why people don’t do itLosing is hard, they can’t make it through itBut not youYou are such a loserYou are such a loserHere’s to you‘Cause you deserve a cheering section tooYou can only fall that far‘Cause you set yourself up so highWho really cares that this time it didn’t fly?At least you triedAt least you triedAt least you’re not that guy watching from the side...Who thinks he’s doing better ’cause he wasn’t defeated...When he’s just a non-entity who never competedYou’re the one who’s out there reaching for something greater...And you knowIt’s better to be a loserThan a spectator. And you are such a loserYou are such a loserSo here’s to you... MrPotatoTed
I'm also a big fan of Panic! at the Disco's "High Hopes", as someone who went from spending four months living in my car and stealing food to now having a six-figure income and four-bedroom house in a great school district for my family. Had to have high, high hopes for a living...Shooting for the stars when I couldn't make a killing,Didn't have a dime but I always had a vision,Always had high, high hopesHad to have high, high hopes for a living...Didn't know how but I always had a feeling,I was gonna be that one in a million,Always had high, high hopes Mama said:Fulfill the prophecy,Be something greater,Go make a legacy,Manifest destiny,Back in the days -- We wanted everything (wanted everything)Mama said:Burn your biographies,Rewrite your history,Light up your wildest dreams,Museum victories, everyday,We wanted everything, wanted everything
MrPotatoTed
And finally, because my on-again off-again high school girlfriend somehow became my best friend for the past 20 years after we finally quit getting back together (followed by extremely dramatic break ups again), I offer "This Was A Shit Show" from the TV show Crazy Ex Girlfriend. ;c) I love you, yes, And I'll confess, The thought of staying is so enticing... And when you speak, My knees get weak, I can't believe, what I'm sacrificing... But let's get real, We know the deal, So, darling, let's not tiptoe... This thing we had, Was not just bad, It was a shit show. We can't undo, Can't make amends, Disfunction is our...lingua franca... We can't unscrew, Each other's friends, We're Jerry Springer...not Casablanca... There's "hard to get", Then there's "neglect," To say it's fate...you'd have to be a bit slow. Not to be crass, But this sucked ass, This was a shit show. Chernobyl, next to us, looked like a campfire... Hurricane Katrina was just bad weather... We have chemistry, of course, But that's a formula for divorce,A play about pieces of feces is what we were together... Oh, what the hell... Let's get a hotel. Cause life is short, and we're not getting any younger... But after sex, What happens next? I mean, in the long run, not just "fatigue and hunger"... And when you say, That I should stay, That's exactly when I should split...though... I won't forget... I can't regret... This beautiful, heart-stopping, breath-taking, life-changing...shit show. He throws in other, "morally contentious," lyrics, just as nonchalantly and casually, too. That's part of his style.
