Your Favorite Song Lyrics

Probably not my #1 lyrics, but probably in my top 10 is this song "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Deathcab for Cutie. It's funny because I would hear this song in coffee shops and not really pay attention to the lyrics for years. However, after paying attention to the lyrics, it's probably the best non-religious song on the prospect of the death of a loved one and of what an agnostic things of the "afterlife." I'd say the singer is agnostic because it allows for the possibility of a heaven, but it is decidedly non-religious. If any hint of religious, it at least shows a preference of following the lover, wherever she goes, to being in a heaven with a God. Very beautiful song:

Love of mine
Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

No blinding light
Or tunnels, to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark

If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In Catholic school,
as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised
by a lady in black
And I held my tongue
as she told me "Son,
fear is the heart of love, "
so I never went back

And if Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes
are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
But it's nothing to cry about
'Cause we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms

And if Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

Then I'll follow you into the dark

Gordon Lightfoot could also be a contender in my opinion, as well.

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. And If You Could Read My Mind. Along with another underrated one I like, his song Don Quixote. Lightfoot is pretty cool. 😄

I've got way too many songs and writers I like. But there's some names/bands that come to mind that are ALWAYS consistently good.

Elton John

Paul McCartney

Supertramp

The Police

Bruce Springsteen

Billy Joel

Rush

Eminem

Biggie Smalls

Hank Williams and Hank Jr.

John Denver

Frank Sinatra

Dean Martin

All of the other OG's. 😛

Fav

Anglophone one

Beside those two, my favourite modern artist is probably Katty Perry

I very much liked modern artist but the best to me is probably her, I like lyrics of Rise and Roar but also the meaning of fireworks

I like Lady Gaga but more for her songs than her lyrics (she is better at the first than the second) however I do love both music and lyrics of Born this Way which is a justified hit because it has both dynamic notes and good lyrics (unlike several of her songs which are bop but without good lyrics like Poker face / Just Dance / Bad Romance)

My favorite lyrics have generally come from three bands, all of which are similar in that they are a lot more vocab-heavy and experimental than most bands.

  • Neutral Milk Hotel (I recommend the song "Aeroplane Over the Sea")
  • The Decemberists (I recommend the song "Mariner's Revenge Song")
  • Of Montreal (I recommend the song "Gronlandic Edit")

If I owned a coffee shop, they'd all play daily at some point. Lyricists from other genres I recommend are Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, the Beatles, Elliott Smith, Grandaddy, AC Newman, the New Pornographers, Sleater-Kinney, Rainer Maria, Serafin, and I'd list others but I gotta go.

I have a lot of favorite songs, mostly thanks to the lyrics.  But here's one I listen to whenever I'm interviewing for a promotion/new job -- "Loser", by Garfunkel & Oates.

As someone who tried a lot of big ideas and failed at all of them before I finally struck gold, I really love this message.

You didn’t do it, didn’t reach your goal,
Your heart is broken; you’re an asshole,
In the end you didn’t have what it takes...
So here’s to you, and your huge mistakes.

You’re humiliated, hollowed out, and exhausted;
You were in the ring fighting the fight -- and you lost it!
This isn’t your time, this wasn’t for you...
At least you did everything you could do...

You’re a loser, but a dreamer;
You’re tired, but you’re strong;
You’re going on no evidence,
You don’t listen to common sense,
You went all in -- and you were wrong...

You are such a loser -- good for you.
It’s something that a lot of people can’t do,
Trying is hard, that’s why people don’t do it,
Losing is hard, they can’t make it through it,
But not you...

You are such a loser...
You are such a loser...
Here’s to you...
‘Cause you deserve a cheering section too.

Throw your heart at it, so what if you break it?

You know now that you’re strong enough to take it;
Don’t let it break you, don’t let them break you;
Fake it, keep going 'til you have a breakthrough!

Icarus is bullshit, that's why it's called "myth"ology;
People can’t stand genius without an apology;
Fuck that, fuck t
hem, go get what you wanna get;
Let them stay at home and comment on the internet...

You’re a loser, but a dreamer
You’re tired, but you’re strong
You’re going on no evidence
You don’t listen to common sense
You went all in, and you were wrong

You are such a loser, good for you
It’s something that a lot of people can’t do
Trying is hard, that’s why people don’t do it
Losing is hard, they can’t make it through it
But not you

You are such a loser
You are such a loser
Here’s to you
‘Cause you deserve a cheering section too

You can only fall that far
‘Cause you set yourself up so high
Who really cares that this time it didn’t fly?

At least you tried
At least you tried
At least you’re not that guy watching from the side...

Who thinks he’s doing better ’cause he wasn’t defeated...
When he’s just a non-entity who never competed

You’re the one who’s out there reaching for something greater...

And you know
It’s better to be a loser
Than a spectator.

And you are such a loser
You are such a loser
So here’s to you...

I'm also a big fan of Panic! at the Disco's "High Hopes", as someone who went from spending four months living in my car and stealing food to now having a six-figure income and four-bedroom house in a great school district for my family.

Had to have high, high hopes for a living...
Shooting for the stars when I couldn't make a killing,
Didn't have a dime but I always had a vision,
Always had high, high hopes

Had to have high, high hopes for a living...
Didn't know how but I always had a feeling,
I was gonna be that one in a million,
Always had high, high hopes

Go make a legacy,
Manifest destiny,
Back in the days -- We wanted everything (wanted everything)

Burn your biographies,
Rewrite your history,
Light up your wildest dreams,
Museum victories, everyday,
We wanted everything, wanted everything

And finally, because my on-again off-again high school girlfriend somehow became my best friend for the past 20 years after we finally quit getting back together (followed by extremely dramatic break ups again), I offer "This Was A Shit Show" from the TV show Crazy Ex Girlfriend. ;c)

I love you, yes,
And I'll confess,
The thought of staying is so enticing...

And when you speak,
My knees get weak,
I can't believe, what I'm sacrificing...

But let's get real,
We know the deal,
So, darling, let's not tiptoe...

This thing we had,
Was not just bad,
It was a shit show.

We can't undo,
Can't make amends,
Disfunction is our...lingua franca...

We can't unscrew,
Each other's friends,
We're Jerry Springer...not Casablanca...

There's "hard to get",
Then there's "neglect,"
To say it's fate...you'd have to be a bit slow.

Not to be crass,
But this sucked ass,
This was a shit show.

Chernobyl, next to us, looked like a campfire...
Hurricane Katrina was just bad weather...
We have chemistry, of course,
But that's a formula for divorce,
A play about pieces of feces is what we were together...

Oh, what the hell...
Let's get a hotel.
Cause life is short, and we're not getting any younger...

But after sex,
What happens next?
I mean, in the long run, not just "fatigue and hunger"...

And when you say,
That I should stay,
That's exactly when I should split...though...

I won't forget...
I can't regret...

This beautiful, heart-stopping, breath-taking, life-changing...shit show.

Leonard Cohen also has another song (I can't remember which - not a radio play, though) that mentions anal sex (though I assume from a man to a woman, not between two men, but still). He throws in other, "morally contentious," lyrics, just as nonchalantly and casually, too. That's part of his style.

Wow, @Patineyou really are "Adam Ruins Everything" of this forum xD.

I don't understand or recognize the reference. And I wasn't trying to, "ruin," or, 'criticize," anything. I was just talking about an idiosyncracy of Leonard Cohen's singing style that is relevant to the previous exchange of posts you and @MrPotatoTed made. So, please, no need to compare me to some no doubt annoying pop culture reference I do not personally follow over an assumption my motive is something it's not. Do we understand?

Ladies and gentlemen, this is Mambo Number Five
One, two, three, four, five
Everybody in the car, so come on, let's ride
To the liquor store around the corner
The boys say they want some gin and juice
But I really don't wanna
Beer bust like I had last week
I must stay deep because talk is cheap
I like Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita
And as I continue you know they getting sweeter
So what can I do? I really beg you, my Lord
To me is flirting it's just like sport, anything fly
It's all good, let me dump it, please set in the trumpet
A little bit of Monica in my life
A little bit of Erica by my side
A little bit of Rita is all I need
A little bit of Tina is what I see
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary all night long
A little bit of Jessica, here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man
Mambo Number Five
Jump up and down and move it all around
Shake your head to the sound
Put your hand on the ground
Take one step left and one step right
One to the front and one to the side
Clap your hand once and clap your hands twice
And if it looks like this then you doing it right
A little bit of Monica in my life
A little bit of Erica by my side
A little bit of Rita is all I need
A little bit of Tina is what I see
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary all night long
A little bit of Jessica, here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man
Trumpet, the trumpet
Mambo Number Five
A little bit of Monica in my life
A little bit of Erica by my side
A little bit of Rita is all I need
A little bit of Tina is what I see
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary all night long
A little bit of Jessica, here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man
I do all to fall in love with a girl like you
'Cause you can't run and you can't hide
You and me gonna touch the sky
Mambo Number Five

Quote
[Chorus]
Remember roaches in my ashtray and roaches in my cereal
Airforce knockoffs with the Gucci print material

Way before the iPhones, Twitter, 'Gram socials
I'm talkin' 'bout nextel chirps and Boost mobiles
Back when the face tatts was for OG killas
Now I'm seein' tear drops on you Soundcloud niggas

Remember back when music had content and metaphors
Way before the mumble nonsense and poppin' handlebars

[Verse 1]
All these rappers junkies talkin' like they dope dealers
One song a scammer, the next song they killers

First time I shot the gun, the neighbors called the people
I was watchin' 12 search for shells like Easter

That's around the time they shot my Daddy for the Rollie
Round the same time AI lost to Kobe
Platinum FUBU summers, rockin' Iceberg in the winter
Gold bag Hermes ain't no Sprewell Spinners
Fuckin' up computers, usin' Limewire or BearShare
Bootleggin', boostin', sellin' CD's at the daycare
Savin' up guala, bean bag for my stash spot
Momma still ask me how the fuck I get that Xbox

Round the first time I saw my uncle smokin' crack rock
In The Flinstones, smokin' Pebbles like it's Bedrock
'Round the same time my pops was scammin' on that laptop
Still remember when my Uncle Sydney took that headshot

I was tryna get them Jordan 17, deadstocks
Used to hoop dream, pushin' rock on the blacktop

Started home invadin', kickin' combination padlock
Puttin' crack rock in the Figure-4 Leg Lock
I was hella young, watchin' Triple H & Ric Flair
Bust my head open play fightin' with a steel chair
Tryna be a wrestler almost put me in a wheelchair
Thankful for that Medicare welfare, healthcare
[Chorus]
Remember roaches in my ashtray and roaches in my cereal
Airforce knockoffs with the Gucci print material

Way before the iPhones, Twitter, 'Gram socials
I'm talkin' 'bout Nextel chirps and Boost mobiles
Back when a face tat was for OG killas
Now I'm seein' tear drops on you Soundcloud niggas

Remember back when music had content and metaphors
Way before the mumble nonsense and poppin' handlebars

[Verse 2]
Nowadays I can't even walk in the store
Without these crazy-ass fans and boppin-ass hoes
Back in '04, a hoe said I wouldn't blow
Now every show I go? 3 or 4 give me dome
I was up in Vegas at the Mayweather party
Then my mama call me 'bout Hurricane Harvey

Said the house got flooded, water covered up the sofa
Impala, Range Rover, she need me to come over
Nowhere near sober, it was fuckin' up my night
Like, "They gon' be alright. Tomorrow, book a flight"
Woke up, 40 missed calls, she was callin' all night
Said there's no more food and lights and she been fightin' for her life
Told Toby book the plane, I gotta be there by tonight
But all this hurricane rain made the airport cancel flights
I'm like, "What the fuck how?", I'm thinkin' like "Wow"
Prayin' that she don't drown.. "Dear Lord, just get her out"

She worked her whole life to move the family out the hood
Just to lose everything she had in the flood
Donald Trump and Red Cross actin' like some hoes
People drownin' in their homes 'cause they couldn't get a boat
Pops got a bad heart, last year he had a stroke
In his bed, off meds, couldn't swim, sink, or float

On the roof for three days before rescue by FEMA
12 years later, same day as Katrina

If you was in my shoes, you would prolly be stressin'
..But sometimes, God, He will bless you and test you
Every day I say my grace because I coulda lost my people
I still got cases, me and my brothers fightin' RICO
600K for the bail bonds people
Another 100K, I pray my lawyer got the cheat code
Organized crime.... dope and money launder
Five to 99 and that's they only offer
