  1. 1. Would You Support a Value Added Tax (VAT)

    • Yes
    • Only if it comes with repealing or lowering other taxation.
    • No

Only if other taxes were repealed or lowered (specifically thinking of state sales taxes here, but I'm open to others), since VAT is essentially a sales tax but less bad since it applies along the whole supply chain. I'd also prefer that the VAT be on more luxury items (thinking not food, or other necessary items), but it's not the end of the world.

It's basically a Federal level sales tax that adds to the State and County ones (or Provincial ones in Canada), but USUALLY exempts grocery items (not including, "junk food,"), pharmaceuticals, rental fees, and other necessities. It about amounts to that.

Okay. I’m wondering why the economist is advocating it if it seems to be a sales tax and nothing more.
