Le Pen spends the entire week in Normandie. Meeting veterans, promising a better future for France. Using a more tame tone this time. (Normandie x3)

Debate Message: It's time for change. Le Pen will use the question Reagan asked in 1980. "Are you better off than you were four years ago?"

Attack: Le Pen will attack the corruption of Center-Right candidates such as Sarkozy. Who only care about themselves and not the French people. Le Pen will be sure not to overly attack. Wanting to renew her image from the one of 4 years ago.

France 2022 First Round Debate Roundup

The lights were on the seven frontrunners for the French presidential election of the 2022 cycle! The debate started with each candidate giving a brief opening statement to their potential voters. Several candidates came out with strong messages to their audiences: Marine Le Pen (10) and Yannick Jadot (10) especially, with Bertrand (8), Sarkozy (9) and Hamon (6) providing decent beginnings as well. Melenchon (1) stumbled hard in his opening, with Bertrand giving a little crack at the leftist's expanse, saying that he was sure there was a cane somewhere in the back if he needed it. Macron (2) also had a rough beginning to the debate, with several audience members gasping when he tripped over some words.

Several candidates ganged up on President Macron, including Bertrand (6), Hamon (5) and Jadot (1). Many felt that Jadot's attack on Macron went over the line into hyperbole, and gained the President back some critical points for his performance. Others went after frontrunner Marine Le Pen, including Sarkozy with a successful hit (8), Melenchon (4), and Macron (5). Only Le Pen went after former President Sarkozy for his corruption and delivered a critical hit to his momentum that had been buliding throughout the debate (9).

The closing statements were more varied than the others, beginning with Bertrand's direct appeal to moderates (10!). Bertrand really hit hard with his appeal, and caused many to shake towards him. Macron had a similarly strong (9) appeal to urban voters, particularly those around Paris who may have been flirting with other candidates. Sarkozy rebounded from the hard hit from Le Pen by taking his appeal to Rural voters (8). Le Pen fumbled at the end of the debate with a botched pitch to moderate conservatives when she echoed a controversial piece of rhetoric from her father (1). Melenchon's appeal to populists (1) went over like a lead balloon as well. Hamon and Jadot both thought the same and appealed to young voters and had the same lukewarm result (4).

Winner of the debate: Xavier Bertrand! (24)

Runner's Up: Nicolas Sarkozy and Emmanuel Macron (21)

Next Up: Benoit Hamon and Yannick Jadot (15)

Loser: Jean Luc Melenchon (6)

Because of the debate turn, the others are gonna be shortened to get our next turn started quicker! 😛

Roundup

As the first round comes closer and closer (5 turns left until that point!), there is visible sweating in both the left-wing and center-right camps. Many on the left are afraid of a last minute endorsement by Xavier Bertrand of Sarkozy, who would leap over President Macron into second. Similarly, on the center-right, they fear a left-wing team up led by Jadot who could do the same to President Macron. For the Greens, the solution is simple: the Socialists should join them as the higher polling center-left candidate. The Socialists have a different calculation. Many want them to stay in the race to continue the party at least being *present* in campaigning. Some think that a Jadot teamup would be beneficial, while others think they should lend institutional help to Macron to avoid a Le Pen or Sarkozy victory. Many have already written off Melenchon as willing to partner with fellow leftists, unless they consolidate behind him personally.

With Xavier Bertrand rising in the polls, he holds a lot of sway currently. His voters will likely make the difference if they begin to peel away, between Sarkozy and Macron. And his strong debate makes his team think that an independent right leaning force would be more powerful than the corrupt Sarkozy. At this point, it looks like no one can force Le Pen out of the second round, barring a complete collapse by the National Rally. There is no easy choice. There are five turns left until the first round's voting begins and the time for answering questions is done. At this point, it is Le Pen and Macron's to lose.

Sarkozy endorses Xavier Bertrand as the only Center Right candidate with a chance of beating Macron, and Le Pen, and announces his permanent retirement from politics, saying "My  time has passed, and the French people clearly don't want me as their President for another five years. I can only hope that Xavier can beat the Liberal Macron, and the Populist Le Pen."

(Having no particular introduction song for this sequence I do the promotion of Barbara Pravi 😛 her song is about assuming who you are)

Mystère au Palais de l'Élysée

Events unfold before the death of Mélenchon

Elysée Palace at night :

Advisor : Mister president, it's looking hard but you might hold as long as we keep the difference with Nicolas Sark.

Former President Nicolas Sarkozy has officially renounced to run and endorse right-wing politician Xavier Bertrand, former president has decided to follow the opinion of some of his friends who thought that it would be better for him to turn the page of politics.

Emmanuel Macron : Good, Sarkozy is more moderate than Xavier Bertrand, he will get a boost from this endorsement but not the complete add-up of every votes. However, I am now in the need to act and act fast.

The day after, Emmanuel Macron holds a meeting in Paris (first event) where he attacks Xavier Bertrand record

France: Emmanuel Macron begins ′grand debate′ tour | News | DW | 16.01.2019

Emmanuel Macron : No, Xavier Bertrand is not Nicolas Sarkozy.

Nicolas Sarkozy was privately in favor of same sex marriage and endorsed it in 2016, never Xavier Bertrand who still politely opposes it without being clear about his will to review the law or not.

Nicolas Sarkozy was for an economic reform, it's unclear if Xavier Bertrand is in favor of more or less spendings.

Above all, Xavier Bertrand has never told if he defined himself as a liberal defensor or a nationalist one. He can't be both in the same time.

If I am against Le Pen in a runoff, or if a left-wing candidate reaches this turn, will he support this candidate against the far-right?

He has to tell his line, he has to clarify it, our compatriots deserve to know.

The meeting is abruptely interrupted

My fellow compatriots

I like you, learned the death of mister the member of parliament, Jean Luc Mélenchon. Monsieur Mélenchon was a political opponent, a concurrent candidate, but he should have lived, he should have continue this great fight he was leading, in order to become president of the Republic.

We hadn't the same views, but this lover of philosophy and letters will remain a figure of our Republic. I decrete three days of national sorrow and interrupt my presidential campaign. An open place for letters and messages for those who want to tell him a final goodbye will be available in the next days in the Elysée palace.

2nd event (the declaration) and 3rd event, the campaign is then interrupted in order to let people go and let their last messages.

Napoleon will express his condolences to the Melenchon family.

Napoleon continues his crusade in the usual - Nouvelle Aquitane. Here, he will give a fairly standard stump speech against the Euro. His rallies are considerably larger than they once were, given that he has now over doubled his support nationwide and broke 5% in the area. (Event 1)

Next, he is back in Hauts-de-France, railing against Macron's performance. (Event 2)

Finally, the young Bonaparte meets with local conservatives nationwide to see if he can scrounge up a few minor endorsements in rural areas. (Event 3)

Before I process anything else, I am doing rolls for the death and things so this will be a minor update, don't post anything between this and the next round up (which will probably be tomorrow!).

Sarkozy Endorsement of Bertrand: 73/100. A good endorsement of Bertrand moves quite a bit straight into the independent's camp.

Le Pen support because of Sarkozy dropping: 73/100. A decent amount of people go to Le Pen as a result of the Republicans' dropping out.

Macron support because of Sarkozy dropping: 32/100. A little bit of support trickles to Macron because of the center-right standard bearer falling out of the race.

Note: Not all will be weighed the same. Sarkozy endorsed Bertrand, so naturally the majority will go to him because of a strong endorsement roll.

Melenchon's death rolls impact the two leftists the most (Greens and Socialists)

Greens: 75/100. A good amount of Melenchon's support goes to Yannick Jadot and the Greens as a result of his untimely passing.

Socialists: 38/100. Some support goes to the Socialists, but it could provide a critical boost for the Greens to maintain its status as the top leftists int he race.
