Goldwater's principal creates a Catch 22. If the medical profession is being, "prevented it from being turned into a political battering ram," by this rule, but only the medical profession can make a diagnosis on the psychiatric and physical fitness of a candidate, you get into a real bind - especially for the voters, who may inadvertently be electing someone they'll deeply regret. Do you see?

The Goldwater Principle doesn't stop a medical professional from making a diagnosis about a candidate.  It ensures such a diagnosis would be based on an actual examination of the subject.  Psychological problems cannot be properly detected through edited video of public statements.

Just to clear, I would not endorse such a, "diagnosis," either. But certain public actions and statements that are more commonly accepted to have HAPPENED (if not why or exactly what was meant by them at the time) can be causes for concern by voters.

I have been very busy and thus have not yet had a chance to articulate my beliefs on why I disagreed with your earlier statement.

Most of the points have been brought to your attention by other posters. The only aspect that I would like to emphasize is that the Goldwater Rule merely stops speculation on a candidate's mental condition without an actual examination by a medical professional. They can comment as private citizens as much as they would like. There is no reason that a medical professional should be comfortable diagnosing candidates without an actual examination.

The American public is incredibly easily influenced by the claim of a medical professional. In fact, fake psychiatric diagnoses have a long history of being misused in American politics. For example, occasionally, whistleblowers from powerful institutions in the United States, both in the private and public sector, have also been labeled with mental disorders - sometimes even without direct psychiatric interviews - presumably under the pressure of powerful lobbies that have been exposed by those whistleblowers. The mere speculation that someone is neurodivergent, suffered with substance abuse, battled with depression, or any other condition is enough for their credibility to be heavily questioned, and for the average voter to distrust their ability to perform even if they are perfectly able to do so.

Knowing this history, and how stigmatized mental health is in American society, we must be very careful to regulate the way we use psychiatric terminology and diagnoses when talking about political figures. That is why we need to continue to support the Goldwater rule.

This does not mean that psychiatrists are not entitled to have political opinions. Furthermore, in democratic societies, they are free to voice these opinions. But it is very important for them to understand that they can only express these opinions as citizens, not as psychiatrists. A democracy would allow psychiatrists to come out and speak about political issues, but democracy would also discourage them from doing so under the protective cloak of psychiatry. If a politician is to be confronted, that must take place in the political arena, not in the clinical realm and with doctors fighting proxy battles and becoming political operatives of their own.

I apologize if this is seen as relitigating the issue and beating a dead horse - I've been unable to respond until now. Best!

What’s your favorite Craig James Bond movie? I’m basic and like Skyfall. I haven’t seen the new one yet unfortunately.

Casino Royale. It's honestly also probably my most watched movie of all time. I grew up with it haha.

Skyfall 😛

Ain't nothing wrong with loving Skyfall too! It's my second favorite of Craig's. Nothing beats the atmosphere, mood, and plot of Casino Royale though imho. "You Know My Name," by Chris Cornell and Adele's "Skyfall." Are some of the best James Bond themes ever made.

Not a big fun of Quantum's and No Time to Die's though. 😛

Mainly because I despise Billie Eilish and uh... if you don't believe me on Quantum of Solace... well. I'll just let you listen to it for yourself. 😛

World is Not Enough

This movie here is severely underrated of Brosnan's era. Although Goldeneye is probably his best film, and it's the one a lot of people say is his only good Bond film... The World is Not Enough is definitely a good one.

Not the biggest fan of Octopussy. And yeah... it's a weird word. 😛

But The Man With the Golden Gun is so great because they cast one of the most epic, legendary actors of all time to be the Bond villain. And that's enough for me. 😛

Tomorrow Never Dies is pretty based in my opinion. Octopussy is way better than a View to a Kill! Old and leathery Roger Moore snagging young ladies is weird lol.
