Misc Event: Senator Berkeley continues his behind the scenes shenanigans to hopefully take the VP slot at convention when it comes around

Legislative Event: Dem Mods will whip behind their Rural Roads Act and sell it as a triumph of the Truman Administration

Truman Events

1. Truman will hope to avoid collapse among Liberals, hosting a town hall to trumpet the Rural Roads Act as an extension of the New Deal programs that could help rural Americans take part in the American Deal.

2. Truman continues his efforts in China, getting in contact with American companies about loaning the Nationalists weapons and aircraft for reduced or possibly even for free.

3. Truman prepares for the run up to the next election, taking a train to NYC to sell the success of his administrations foreign policy efforts.

Walter Reuther announces his bid for the Vice Presidential slot. In his first move Reuther will move to capture the public's favour before the party bosses in hopes f using the court of public opinion to boost himself. Reuther will make various appearances on the radio and will host meet and greets across the country.

FDR Jr will listen to the public feelings and once again take to making his own appearances. His Gubernatorial hopes no longer even a badly held secret Roosevelt will up his game and make use of the Roosevelt charm. He will deliver speeches on street corners and host events were any New Yorker can come and speak to him about how they want to see their home state improved.

(4) Reuther is too left wing for many moderates, and anathema to the southern delegates. His bid does energize unions, however, and his strong civil rights support will rally up the arch-liberals at the convention.

(10!) FDR Jr is a hit! His decision to campaign personally is very popular with the people of New York, and he successfully charms them with his answers to their questions. Local officials, mayors, and community leaders across New York City give endorsements to the young political dynamo.

The DemPaleos will support the Anti Subversion Act, the Rural Roads Investment Act, and the Barkley-Wallace Act.

---

Richard Russell also announces his candidacy for the Vice Presidential spot.

Clarence Lea criticizes Oyama vs. California.

(3) Dixiecrat support for the Barkley-Wallace and Rural Roads Investment Act will be a major benefit in helping them pass. Meanwhile, the Anti-Subversion Act quietly Gains a few votes through conservative efforts.

(5) Russell’s candidacy is an expected development, and universally acclaimed in the south. Everywhere else? Not so much.

(1!) Lea’s comments against Oyama Vs. California are widely panned for being racist, even by 1940s standards. His views on Japanese people aren’t exactly new, but Lea may have been better off keeping them to himself.

On 12/29/2021 at 8:31 AM, Sean F Kennedy said:

1. Harley Kilgore will introduce legislation to raise the minimum wage to 85 cents.

2. Hubert Humphrey will push Democratic Leadership to be more pro Civil Rights.

Barkley-Wallace Act] —> aye

[Rural Roads Investment Act] —> aye

[Anti-Subversion Act] —> aye

(4) The Minimum Wage Raise Act “Kilgore Act” is popular with liberals and progressives. Perhaps it may even have half a chance, if moderate democrats think passing the legislation could help them come election time. Still, the lobbying of big business and conservatives in a republican congress will make this an uphill battle. [Kilgore Act passes committee]

(9) Humphrey’s efforts are successful, especially with northern democrats and big city bosses who want to maintain black support in their re-elections. By championing this issue Humphrey has quickly built a name for himself, and is becoming one of the fastest rising stars among the liberal Democrats.

Misc:

1. Henry Wallace blasts President Truman in a speech in NYC, attacking him for turning his back on universal healthcare, and betraying FDR's New Deal. He goes on to proclaim that the Progressive Party is the true party for the New Deal, and Roosevelt's beliefs, even claiming that if he was alive today, FDR would either be running for President as a Progressive, or would have endorsed Henry Wallace.

Legis: Vito Marcantonio propose the Apology Act, which would issue a formal apology, by the US Federal Government, to Japanese-Americans for their internment during WW2 admitting that the internment was based off of race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership. The Act would also a payment of $2,000 to each still living former internee.

Special Election: As mentioned previously, the Progressive Party, in alliance with the American Labor Party will run Leo Isacson in the special election for NY-24. They will also redouble their efforts to bring the Liberal Party into the fold.

(5) Wallace’s speech goes well at first, and many of the listeners are riled up with anger at Truman’s recent actions. Wallace’s efforts to tie his party to the New Deal is popular with Democrats too. That being said, Wallace’s efforts to tie his party to Roosevelt aren’t as successful, and some in the audience question the truth of Wallace’s claim that Roosevelt would be running as a Third Party or endorsing a Third Party if he still lived.

(7) Coming off the heels of Lea’s incredibly offensive speech about Japanese people, members of both parties seem eager to save face with a political gesture. Marcantonio’s bill does just that, and gathers support from both parties as a result.

Naturally, conservatives are skeptical about handouts and Dixiecrats are skeptical about “Japs” in general. Will enough moderates sign on to the bill to make up for that? [Apology Act passes committee]

[This is a primary roll for the special election, not an event roll. Other primary info below.]

(9) Leo Isacson is a natural choice for the NY-24th, and his campaign is met with cheering crowds across the Bronx. His name recognition and strong ground-game make this seat a strong potential for third party pickup. Isacson’s efforts to bring the Liberal Party into the fold are also fairly successful, and while still against an outright merger they tentatively agree to allow Progressive candidates to cross-file if they wish.

Vandenberg will visit China and see what's going on with the Kuomintang. Fact finding mission with his Congressional Delegation.

Wallace will support the Anti Subversion bill

Wallace will meet with Donors and start getting more money for Senate Republicans

Once Vandenberg returns from China, he will meet with several constituents in his office

(2) As a high-ranking member of the United States Government, Vandenberg is refused entry to an active war zone for his own safety. Meanwhile, his absence in the senate is starting to strain republican efforts to whip on legislation.

(6) Wallace raises some funds for the GOP. While he isn’t particularly inspiring, the experienced politician knows all the right people.

On 1/2/2022 at 2:25 PM, Rezi said:
  1. Speaker Martin will whip in favor of the Barkley-Wallace Act
  2. Dewey will hold a fundraiser in New York City

(2) The absence of Vandenberg, one of the strongest advocates of internationalism in the Republican Party, makes Martin’s efforts more difficult. He manages to get a few more votes regardless.

(3) Dewey’s fundraiser is predictably mediocre.

On 1/3/2022 at 6:45 PM, Dobs said:

I'm not sure if my Republican friends have said this yet but the Conservative faction does not object to the candidacy of Joseph DeNigris.

We favor the Barkley-Wallace Act.

We oppose the Rural Roads Investment Act.

Legis 1: We will whip in favor of the Anti-Subversion Act, with our Senators trotting out long and passionate anti-communist speeches in support.

Misc 1: General MacArthur will approach General Eisenhower and sit with him for a discussion. Now that Eisenhower has bowed out publically, MacArthur believes it is appropriate to discuss a possible endorsement. MacArthur will also float the possibility of Secretary of State or Defense for Ike, if he would be interested to serve in such a capacity. He recognizes that they have had their difference, but they are ultimately the same anti-communist military men who each defeated a Fascist Empire respectively. He also knows that even if they have had their personal differences, Eisenhower's opposition to Truman far out ways their personal history.

Misc 2: The National Patriotism Campaign begins to set up infrastructure by way of personnel and advertisement in the early primary states that could be quickly converted into MacArthur staff. Their ground game is to get Anti-Communism on the minds of these early state voters and prime them to back the General.

[Not an event roll, but a roll for the special election primary. More info below.]

(3) DeNigris has no chance in the NY-24th, which is solid wallacite territory. Still, better to field someone than no-one, right? However, conservatives voicing support for a republican in arch-progressive downtown NYC may have caused some rumblings from leftists…

(1!) The McCarran Act is seen as a bridge too far for many republicans. Worse still, a few conservative republicans actually spurn the whip, claiming that the act is a flagrant example of government overreach!

The speeches on Anti-communism, meanwhile, are seen as stale and overdone. For whatever reason, the American people are starting to cool off on anti-communist sentiment. Perhaps someone, or something, new is needed to bring the Red Scare back in full force?

(3) Eisenhower politely, but firmly, refuses any endorsement or political involvement whatsoever in the 1948 election.

(5) The campaign is relatively successful in raising public support and infrastructure for MacArthur, which is sorely needed for his insurgent campaign. The pitch to anti-communism is predictable, and somewhat complicated by the failed speeches of many a republican senator on the McCarran Act.

Legislative Proposal:

Irving Ives will propose the American Economic Security Act, which allows for all community colleges in the US to opt-in to Federal subsidization to run a free, open-to-all Small Business Management class, teaching attendees the basics of starting, owning, and managing a business of their own.

Misc. Event:

Governor Earl Warren will hold a series of rallies in California championing his universal healthcare proposal set to be on the ballot statewide next election.

(10!) Ives’ bill is a massive success! With post-war Americans eager to enter the workforce, a program for business management classes is widely popular and well received. Even conservatives are open to helping out entrepreneurs, and may be persuaded to vote for the bill. Meanwhile, Ives’ has further cemented his popularity in his home state and with liberal republicans nationwide.

(9) Warren builds substantial support for the Ballot Measure, and gains support from liberals for his strong advocacy of universal healthcare.

3. Truman prepares for the run up to the next election, taking a train to NYC to sell the success of his administrations foreign policy efforts.

(9) Barkley secures more support, effectively swatting Reuther’s attempts to snag liberal delegates away from him. He also chips away at some border south delegations that could swing to Richard Russell.

(4) The bill is popular with rural voters and democrats, which helps the bill gain many votes. The whip goes well enough, although it doesn’t secure votes outside of the moderate democratic caucus.

(11/20) Truman’s appeal to a bill supported by liberals and southern democrats shrewdly appeals to the entire New Deal Coalition. He counters Wallace’s speeches with firm action, and wins back some liberals.

(19/20) The plan is a success, and secures more forces for the Kuomintang. Truman’s strong internationalism has wide bipartisan support, and helps distract from the inter-party squabbles.

(7/20) Truman’s trip rallies support for Karl Propper, the presumptive Democratic nominee, and helps put a dent in Leo Isacson’s campaign. Appealing to foreign policy is popular generally, but in Uber-liberal NYC an appeal to New Deal programs may have been better suited.

House

Rural Roads Investment Act: 340-91 [Passed]

[0/31 Progs, 0/95 Libs, 11/137 Mods, 61/117 Cons, 19/51 Paleos]

Barkley-Wallace Act: 322-109 [Passed]

[13/31 Progs, 8/95 Libs, 17/137 Mods, 35/117 Cons, 36/51 Paleos]

Senate

McCarran Act: 49-47 Passed]

[6/6 Progs, 18/18 Libs, 19/29 Mods, 4/34 Cons, 0/9 Paleos]

Special Election: NY-24th

Democratic Primary:

[DemLib] Karl Propper (3) [100%]

Democrats are united behind Propper, and progressive democrats who may have fielded a challenger are generally satisfied with the liberal Propper. No primary opponent materializes, and Propper comes out of it with a united, albeit uninspired, campaign.

Republican Primary:

[GOPMod] Joseph DeNigris (3) [53.74%]

(Protest!) [GOPProg] Magnus Lipton (10!) [46.36%]

Joseph DeNigris was trotted out as the sacrificial lamb of the year, in what was expected to be a blowout win for the Democrats or Progressive Party. What wasn’t expected, however, was the backlash from some progressive republicans, who wanted a more left wing option for their party nominee. While statewide progressive and liberal republicans stayed mum and didn’t want to rock the boat by attacking a republican who would lose anyways, local activists and unions organized an insurgent campaign led by Magnus Lipton, a small-time assemblyman from the Bronx. His stellar campaign far exceeded expectations, and nearly toppled DeNigris in spite of a total lack of endorsements, funds, or party support.

DeNigris survived narrowly, but his already small share of the electorate may have been hampered by the bruising primary. Lipton, meanwhile, has gained name recognition with his protest bid for the nomination in the NY-24th.

Liberal Primary:

Dean Alfange [Lib] (6) 87.12%

Leo Isacson [Prog] (7) 12.88%

Alfange agrees to let Isacson run for the Liberal ticket as a show of good faith, but easily wins his Party’s nomination regardless.

Progressive Primary:

Leo Isacson (9) [100%]

Progressives love Isacson, and he comes out of the primary with unanimous approval from the Party. His campaign managers even manage to negotiate a cross-file in the Liberal Primary, although it is unlikely to succeed.

NY-24th Election Poll:

[Prog] Leo Isacson: ~48%

[DemMod] Karl Propper: ~24%

[Lib] Dean Alfange:~7%

[GOPMod] Joseph DeNigris: ~2%

Undecided: ~19%

* Each faction with a candidate in the election gets one extra event (out of 10) to spend on the special election. Factions without a candidate don’t get any event. @Kitten and @Hestia will each have an event, along with @WVProgressive. Alfange will have an auto-event, since he’s not owned by any player. You can use this event to campaign for any candidate, or drop out if you want to do that.

He will also pay a brief visit to Arizona and New Mexico Yes, that's the Confederacy. He will plead for politician's endorsements and tell voters that Truman does not deserve to win if he continues to be an enemy to Southern values.

(4) By avoiding a bitter fight over the Apology Act and controversial McCarran Act, southern democrats are able to efficiently fight the Kilgore Act. However, the far right is angry at the Southern Democratic leadership for conceding on these issues.

(10!) McCarran is a hit! After weeks of long and boring anti-communist speeches McCarran’s straight talking and aggressive rhetoric is explosively popular with the base, and well suited to the national mood. McCarran’s speeches make it into newspapers across the country, and his reputation as an anti-communist crusader steadily grows.

(4) Richard Russell secures the Deep South, but not much else. His campaign stops in Texas are uninspiring, and he’s even booed at times in Arizona and New Mexico.

3. Hubert Humphrey will officially announce his bid for Senate.

(4) Walter Huber’s campaign launch goes moderately well. Humphrey’s vigorous campaigning helps some, but many question what a minor major from Minnesota is doing giving speeches in Ohio.

(2) Pepper’s “base” in Florida is shrinking, and other factions in the state are not happy with the liberal platform of the Florida senator.

(2) Walter Reuther makes a few appearances, but quickly gets burned out by the enormous campaigning schedule. Even Wallace seems exhausted after visiting dozens of states in only a few weeks. It’s hard to say if the campaigning even helped all that much, with how wide the Progressive Party has cast it’s net.

(10!) [Special Election Event] A resounding success! The Progressive leaders secure wide support from ethnic communities and liberal-progressives in the New York 24th district. Leo Isacson soars in the polls, and the Wallace campaign grows healthily in downtown New York.

(4) Marcantonio secures more support. The apparent concession and lukewarm opposition of conservatives in both parties may allow the bill to make it to Truman’s desk after all.

(10!) Dewey’s rally is a massive success! The thronging crowds of New Hampshire are over the moon to see the liberal darling of the GOP, and the republican hopeful gathers numerous local endorsements as well. The support of senator Tobey further increases Dewey’s credentials and local appeal.

(7) Leo Allen responds to Martin’s procedural shenanigans effectively, and thwarts Martin’s efforts to kill the bill prematurely. Allen’s vigorous defense of the McCarran Act greatly improves his status within the conservative flank of the GOP, and delivers a blow to the speaker. Not every conservative is totally on board with the McCarran Act, but the attempt to subvert a vote on the house floor incenses those conservatives enough that many will vote in favor out of spite.

(8) Norris Cotton successfully organizes the infrastructure for MacArthur’s campaign. While not as popular as Dewey, Cotton’s focus on organizing instead of meet-and-greets lays the groundwork for the upcoming primary.

(5) McCarthy doesn’t really have an anti-communist base (yet). In fact, most anti-communists are more attracted to MacArthur himself or senator McCarran. Still, McCarthy does build a campaign framework for MacArthur in the state of Wisconsin. Lt. Colonel Philip LaFollette remains silent after hearing news of your selection for the Wisconsin campaign chair…

(20!) Truman’s speech is widely considered one of the best of his entire career, and receives broad praise from across the political aisle. The Indian government thanks Truman for his comments, and offers to receive him if he wishes.

(1!) The UK and France refuse the offer quietly, but word of the attempted deal leaks anyways. Unfortunately, a few of the diplomats sent to negotiate the deal made some questionably legal offers, and American Newspapers don’t hesitate to attack Truman over corruption in his cabinet as a result. Kuomintang morale falls after word of the failed negotiations reaches Chiang Kai-Shek.

(17) Truman’s speech succeeds in alienating liberal fears of Truman’s dedication to the New Deal. While more moderate than his previous rhetoric, Truman’s speeches maintain the democratic Bona-fides and make a strong case for the continuation of the New Deal.

(4) Barkley is way out of his element in California, but gains support nevertheless.

(2) Moderates and Conservatives are able to lower the cash amount to $500 with significant help from conservative republicans, but Truman get’s no praise for it due to his silence.

Special Election NY-24

Leo Isacson (10!): 57.11%

Karl Propper [Auto] (7) 28.04%

Dean Alfange [Auto] (6) 11.02%

Joseph DeNigris [Auto] (9) 3.83%

When the dust cleared, the results were a landslide victory for the Progressive Party and their nominee: Leo Isacson. While the other candidates avoided gaffes or blunders, and the Republican nominee managed to heal the rift from a bruising primary, none could match the overwhelming appeal of the Progressive campaign. The effort put into this race by Henry Wallace and his party secured widespread turnout and endorsements from leftist leaders.

The results are alarming for Democratic Party Leaders, who must now contend with a viable third party in the state of New York that can win congressional elections. Isacson’s margin exceeded expectations and polling as well, which will bring into question the legitimacy of polling methods used by pundits. Overall, Henry Wallace has had a great night with this win.

Special Election VA-4 [Auto Historical]

Dem Primary

Watkins Abbott [DemPaleo] (4) 48.23%

Morton G. Goode [DemCon] (10!) 48.37%

Robert W. Arnold [DemMod] (3) 3.4%

A stunning upset! The far-right Watkins Abbott ran a campaign focused on anti-communism and segregation, but failed to appeal to voters in a primary where every candidate was anti-communist and segregationist (or silent on the issue). Abbott’s overtures to the Byrd organization failed as well, as both Goode and Abbott were seen as allies of the powerful Harry Byrd and neither received his endorsement. Where the two candidates differed was in message, ultimately. Goode campaigned as an experienced statesman and deal-maker with years of prior political acumen. Abbott campaigned as a fighter for social conservatism and “state’s rights”. Goode’s narrow victory proved the strength of his message, albeit only just.

GOP Primary

T. Robert Cocks [GOPCon] (6) 100%

Nobody challenges Cocks. He will lose.

Election:

Morton G. Goode [DemCon]: 96.43%

T. Robert Cocks [GOPCon]: 3.57%

Woods V. Cloyd W. Miller Co. 9-0

Fall of Czechoslovakia

It is a dark day for Europe.

Rumblings of unrest in Eastern Europe had been heard of for years, but only now have they borne terrible fruit. The Republic of Czechoslovakia has been destroyed in a Soviet-backed coup, ushering in a communist dictatorship and the end of democracy in the country. Word of the coup has sent shockwaves across the Allied World, and raised massive fears of communist insurgency in the rest of Europe.

The American people are outraged and alarmed at this development, and have already taken to calling for action against further communist advancement. As the voices for reconciliation with the Comintern are drowned out even further, one word has been bandied about for the coming struggle…

The Cold War

Glen Taylor announces party switch! (100!)

Glen Taylor, the firebrand progressive senator from Idaho, has stunned the political world by announcing his decision to leave the Democratic Party and join the Progressive Party after extensive talks with Henry Wallace and Progressive Party leaders. Taylor cites the pivot of Truman and moderate democrats towards the center as part of the motivation for his flip, and attacks the internationalism of both parties. Taylor’s flip was received surprisingly well by many across the county, and even many Idahoans remain supportive of the senator. The surge in funds from union leaders and progressives will prove instrumental to helping Taylor in his bid for re-election. Taylor’s flip gives the Progressive Party a member in both chambers for the first time since 1946, and further strengthens the campaign of Henry Wallace.

And with that we have finished the first off-season of 1948RP! Starting now, we will be moving into primary mode. That means no more legislative events or misc events, and each player can run a candidate in the primary of either of the two major parties (or run for VP at the convention). Each primary candidate will get 3 events per turn to be spent wherever they wish. The president will still maintain 3 presidential events to respond to crisis and national events, on top of the 3 events he gets to campaign with in the primary. Each faction can run one main candidate, but can also run favorite son candidates in specific states if they wish. For information on the primary season and convention look at turn 1, or look at the spreadsheet below.

Starting with turn one of the primary season, polls with be allowed. I’ll be keeping things simple, just statewide polls for statewide primaries. Each faction can request one poll per turn. Keep in mind that polling isn’t always reliable…

Note: Factions that choose not to run a primary candidate will still receive three events each turn. You can spend them on running for VP, promoting policies at the convention, or campaigning for candidates in statewide primaries. The choice is yours.

If you want to run a candidate in a primary, make your announcement now!

Furthermore, this turn represents the start of the Cold War system, which will be used in place of historical events in proxy wars in the Cold War. Please take a look at the spreadsheet and let me know what questions you have on the system’s inner workings. Any major changes to the spreadsheet will be included in turn updates so you won’t be caught off guard by  any changes. Most changes to investment will be in charge of the president, although congress can increase investment through legislation. Starting now, any event or bill that is meant to go towards a proxy war or investment should be labeled as such. This system will determine the fate of China, Greece, Indochina, and many more countries abroad. Good luck.

1. Henry Wallace will hold a rally in the Bronx, talking about how he will pass Roosevelt's Second Bill of Rights, and write a comprehensive Civil Rights Bill as President.

2. Wallace will once again visit Norman Thomas, and ask for his endorsement, mentioning their similar economic beliefs, and the need to unite the anti-Stalinist Left.

3. The Progressive Party will have PPA aligned bands, and singer like Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Paul Robeson, and others to record an album of American Labor Music, which will be used to raise funds for the campaign. A personal recording of Wallace's stump speech will also be added into the middle of the album.

@Timur@WVProgressive@Dobs@Hestia@Sean F Kennedy@Fbarbarossa@Rezi@The Blood@Kitten

Just a quick clarifier on a few things.

1. Your candidate’s campaign announcement can be as long or short as you want it to be, but include it in your turn so I can know which candidates are running. Even if your candidate already announced or is obviously running (like Truman), include a campaign announcement anyways. I will roll these before the primary season starts, to set up the primary election. Also, just to be clear we are merging the campaign announcement with the first turn of the primary to simplify the schedule. This means that you can request polls starting with this turn. Your campaign announcement is a free event, and you can still do three events on top of your announcement.

2. The Cold War System will work through points earned from levels of involvement (foreign aid, military aid) used to “buy” events in foreign proxy wars. You gain points by putting more resources into a proxy war (men, guns, money), and you stockpile enough points to buy events. Each purchased event will be rolled, and will help or hurt depending on the roll. Wars will naturally drift towards their historical outcome, but you can help or hurt your side with an event in a proxy war. The president will mainly be responsible for influencing the Cold War system, and is in charge of spending these “events” that are bought with points. High levels of involvement can also cause domestic unrest, so keep an eye out for that in turn updates. Non presidential players can influence the proxy war system by introducing laws to lower or raise involvement. Any laws meant to influence the Cold War system should be explicitly written as such. Spending points to buy events is a free event (doesn’t need to come from the usual presidential three), but can only be done once per turn at most.

Starting January 16th we will be moving to the regular schedule.

This means turns will be once a week only (On sundays), instead of every 3-4 days. Events will need to all be submitted before Sunday morning/afternoon. If events aren’t in by Sunday, and a substitute can’t fill in, then the player’s turn will be skipped. If enough players don’t get events in then the turn will be delayed for a week. The next deadline for events will be January 23rd.

Pat McCarran will take his fight against Communism to the primaries. He will challenge Truman for the nomination telling a crowd graphic details of Communist atrocities while blasting Truman for being too weak on those Commies.

---

1.Pat McCarran will visit New Hampshire and talk about Communism

2.Pat McCarran will criticize Truman on his visit to New Hampshire.

3.Pat McCarran will campaign hard in New Hampshire. He tells diehard anti-Communists that he will launch an investigation into the Progressive Party.
