1. Your candidate’s campaign announcement can be as long or short as you want it to be, but include it in your turn so I can know which candidates are running. Even if your candidate already announced or is obviously running (like Truman), include a campaign announcement anyways. I will roll these before the primary season starts, to set up the primary election. Also, just to be clear we are merging the campaign announcement with the first turn of the primary to simplify the schedule. This means that you can request polls starting with this turn. Your campaign announcement is a free event, and you can still do three events on top of your announcement.

President Truman announces his campaign for President in his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. He focuses on the successes of his administration, particularly those that involve China and trying to combat communism. He speaks highly of his trip to India and hopes that they will become a bulwark of democracy in the region.

Senator Barkeley will also declare a campaign for the vice presidency. He notes that he is a proven vote getter and legislator from Kentucky. He says that he runs his own campaign and hopes to catch the minds of all of those in the Democratic Party.

1. Truman will visit with top Democratic leaders on the West Coast, trying to sell them a pitch based on connecting the West through more roads investments to make it easier to navigate cross-country and create more money for their states.

2. Senator Barkeley will meet with Northeast Democrats to talk about the Rural Roads Investment that he peddled, pointing it to be a unifying piece of legislation that will help their people and districts.

3. Truman will lastly spend a day giving a speech in neighboring Tennessee, where he talks at length about the importance of projecting strength domestically and abroad, which he says that his Republican opponents lack the strength and ability to do both.

  1. Thomas Dewey moves on from New Hampshire to campaign with Senator Wiley in the Senator's home campaign of Wisconsin.
  2. A brand new ad will premier across the Northeast touting Dewey's record as governor, speaking of how he was able to keep a balanced state in New York while still providing for its citizens.
  3. Dewey and his supporters in New York will move to assure that he receive as many delegates from the state as possible, given that such support could make his candidacy near insurmountable.
  4. Speaker of The House Joseph Martin will announce his intention to be the Dewey campaign's surrogate on the ballot in Massachusetts, doing so with the support of the Republican State Party who had previously fallen behind his potential presidential bid.

President Truman Vetoes McCarran Act!

Yesterday Truman issued a veto for the controversial McCarran Act, a hardline piece of anti-communist legislation that passed both chambers of congress last week. The act, which was proposed by a member of Truman’s own party, faced opposition from many house members and senators despite a year of popular anti-communist sentiment. Truman’s veto cited concerns over freedom of speech and the need to fight communism abroad instead. With the bill vetoed, it will now be returned to congress where a 2/3rds majority is required to override the president. With the bill’s passage in the senate and house as narrow as it was, there will be little chance of an override being successful.

Already conservatives have condemned the president’s decision, while liberals and progressives have praised him. Time will tell if Truman’s decision is enough to bring back the Wallace wing of the party, and if McCarran’s enraged supporters can be kept in the fold.

[McCarran Act Vetoed, Action to @Timur to attempt an override or not]

Campaign Announcements

Henry Wallace [Progressive Party] (36/100)

Wallace has had an excellent first few weeks in the lead up to the presidential election. The endorsement of the CIO, victory of Leo Isacson, and pivots of Truman have helped him build a larger following. Unfortunately, that luck may be running out. A few of his “fellow travelers” have been linked to radical and potentially subversive groups, and Wallace’s failure to purge the party of these elements may be fatal to his efforts to win mainstream liberals. Meanwhile, Truman’s veto of the McCarran Act, while igniting a conservative firestorm in some parts of the country, has done much to take the wind of the Wallace campaign’s sails. Henry Wallace maintains a strong following with his economic message, however, and the support of many progressives across the country. Overall, his campaign announcement goes over decently enough, but certainly won’t be going in the history books by any means. If nothing else, Wallace’s campaign has been buoyed by the utter catastrophe happening in the Truman campaign.

Pat McCarran [Democratic Party] (72/100)

As word reaches the country that president Truman vetoed the McCarran Act, conservative democrats and republicans are up in arms. The timing couldn’t possibly be better for a fiercely anti-communist campaign for president! McCarran’s fanatical message electrifies the crowd, and his support surges with southerners and some western conservatives. While the party mainstream remains skeptical of the firebrand senator, a flurry of letters and donations are pouring into the sleepy state of Nevada. Liberals and progressives still loathe McCarran, and may vote for Truman in the primaries out of disgust for him. Meanwhile, moderates are mostly content and don’t wish to rock the boat. For McCarran to succeed, he will need a miracle. He has a chance, however, and some party leaders are becoming very worried…

Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. [Republican Party] (82/100)

Lodge launches his candidacy for Vice President extremely well. As a well regarded name in the party, and wealthy one at that, Lodge begins with a strong position among the party leaders in the northeast. Furthermore, his announcement branches out to African Americans and Anti-Communists alike, allowing for a broad coalition of Lodge supporting republicans. Among vice presidential candidates, Lodge may just be the front-runner for the time being. It remains to be seen if he can keep it that way.

Douglas MacArthur [Republican Party] (97/100)

America is on fire, and the torch is held by none other than Douglas MacArthur.

After weeks of hints and quiet fundraising, MacArthur returns to a booming crowd of people in San Francisco. The work of his surrogates across the country couldn’t have gone better: their local organizations had created a frenzy of enthusiasm nationwide with money pouring in from all manner of Americans. By the time MacArthur joins the stage the din of the crowd is near-deafening.

His speech, remembered for three fateful words: “Duty, Honor, Country”, will go down in history as one of the greatest of all time. Days after the local MacArthur organizations swell in number, and more and more money continues to pour in. Even some liberal party leaders consider the prospect of throwing in with the general. The GOP is desperate for a win, after all, and none other than Douglas MacArthur seem poised to give it to them.

Harry Truman [Democratic Party] (2/100)

The week before his big announcement, Truman created a political shockwave by vetoing the McCarran Act. By the time he takes the stage in Kansas City, word has gone around the country twice over, and Pat McCarran is launching an intra-party challenge. The crowd is very angry, and even booes Truman a handful of times. After failing to win the crowd with a foreign policy message, the bedraggled president leaves the stage early and returns to DC. Days later, news breaks of the colossal failure of the campaign announcement, and Pat McCarran surges even more.

Up until now Truman has possessed sole control over the party as a whole, but the sheer backlash from anti-communist voters has created a rupture in the Democratic electorate so vast that it may just cost Truman the nomination itself. Truman’s flirtation with civil rights legislation has also destroyed much of his southern appeal, without gaining very much support from African Americans. Meanwhile, Reuther’s quixotic campaign has siphoned off union money, and many progressives angry about Truman’s universal healthcare pivot are flat-out ditching the primary to campaign for Henry Wallace.

Truman remains the presumptive nominee for the time being, but his campaign is in genuine danger. For the first time in decades the democratic nomination is contested, and Truman will have to fight like hell to keep it.

Alben Barkley [Democratic Party] (49/100)

Barkley has wisely avoided the divisive subjects of anti-communism and civil rights, which allows him to keep mediocre approval with the party as a whole. Nobody is particularly thrilled or excited by the Kentucky senator’s campaign, but it is unlikely anyone will be able to take him out at the convention.

Thomas Dewey [Republican Party] (47/100)

Dewey has been the front-runner for this nomination since the dawn of time, and his speech goes over moderately well. While he is popular with the party leadership and the northeast, the explosion of the MacArthur campaign has overshadowed his announcement and will make the nomination far more challenging than expected. Overall, a decent but slightly underwhelming week for the presumptive nominee. It seems the governor will need to bring a little more fire into his campaign if he wishes to take MacArthur head on.

Walter Reuther [Democratic Party] (34/100)

Reuther’s campaign is fairly popular with unions and African Americans, his political base. His speeches to these groups go over well, but most other democrats remain unimpressed. Barkley is a formidable VP candidate, and Reuther’s social positions make him anathema in the south and some of the west. While the union man might sway a state or two, and could impact the presidential race, overall his chances seem quite slim.

Arthur Vandenberg [Republican Party] (57/100)

Arthur Vandenberg is a solid and popular candidate for president, which shows in the positive reception of his speech. His age remains problematic to some, and his time spent gallivanting in Asia has left him with few endorsers among the party mainstream. While a strong choice for the midwest, Vandenberg will have some serious catching up to do if he wants to take the nomination from the two major candidates.

Poll Request: Support for FDR's Second Bill of Rights among likely voters.

(3) Wallace’s rally goes decent, but fails to appeal to those who aren’t already firmly wallacite.

(10!) Norman Thomas agrees! As one of the few (begrudgingly) respected socialists in America, Thomas opens the door to socialist candidates and voters working within and with the Progressive Party. Wallace gains support in major industrial centers, and socialist papers offer their support to the Progressive Party.

(3) The singing parts are a clever idea, and the albums sell decently. Unfortunately, most people toss the albums after getting to your stump speech, and are interested more in the music than the underlying message.

3.Pat McCarran will campaign hard in New Hampshire. He tells diehard anti-Communists that he will launch an investigation into the Progressive Party.

[Poll: Truman vs. Republican vs. Dem Paleo(e.g. Jim Eastland) vs. Henry Wallace]

(10!) McCarran surges in New Hampshire, raising even more alarm bells for the Truman campaign.

(4) McCarran inflicts more damage on the Truman campaign

(2) Pepper’s efforts are a flop.

(8) Myer’s proposal is fairly well received, and will increase support for future infrastructure projects.

(1!) Kefauver’s announcement is met with a flurry of ad-hominem attacks and defamatory pamphlets by the political bosses in Tennessee. The prospective candidate fails to effectively respond to them, and slips in the polls.

(5) Warren’s candidacy will lock up California

(10!) Case’s campaign is extraordinarily popular from the start, and he will be a fierce-some candidate in November should he prevail in the primary. It remains to be seen if the incumbent senator will be stepping down, but even without him doing so Case may still have a chance.

1. Arthur Vandenberg wines and dines with some Republican Old Guards in order to get them on his side for his campaign. Hoping to rebuild his reputation at home as a legislator first and foremost. He commonly refers to Thomas Dewey as the "Boy wonder." And subtly implies that Dewey is not fit to win a Presidential election with his defeat in 1944 still in mind... and his rather youthful demeanor, and inexperience.

2. Senator Vandenberg begins warming up to the "NPC" (National Patriotism Campaign). Meeting with leaders of the organization both on the ground and in the halls of Congress itself. While they might be a largely Pro-MacArthur organization. Vandenberg makes no mistake in mentioning his experience on the ground in Asia. Expressing his dedication to ensuring that China does not fall to the Communists. Vandenberg implies he's the only candidate with the mindset who can get it properly done.

3. Vandenberg continues his efforts to galvanize his status among the party establishment, seeking to insert himself as the compromise candidate between the Boy Wonder, and the American Caesar.

1. MacArthur makes some appearance on the ground in Wisconsin. Wisconsin, as a midwestern state with growing anti-communist sentiments, should make fertile ground for the campaign's message and be an early boon in the primary season.

2. NPC Connecticut State Chairwoman Clare Boothe Luce, who served in the House 1943-1947 from CT, embarks on a mission to meet with leaders of the Connecticut delegation. While the state may be presumed to be in Dewey's camp, the ferociously anti-communist Luce will use her personal influence and political acumen to tilt the scales in favor of MacArthur as best she can.

3. The NPC releases an advertisement on behalf of the MacArthur campaign comparing the military leadership and decisive action of MacArthur, the man who won the war in the East, with the bumbling errors of Harry Truman in the past weeks and the ineffectual privilege of Thomas Dewey. The ad will feature the MacArthur campaign's new slogan at the end "Honor, Duty, Country".

1. Following the fall of Chezloslovakia Wallace will give a speech in Boston redefining his foreign policy. He states that the coup in Czechoslovakia has shown that the Soviet Union cannot be, as he had once hoped, a partner in spreading democracy and human rights across the globe. He compares the current crusade to the recent fight against Fascism, saying that while the enemy has changed the goal remains the same; The United States of America must be an active crusader for Democracy, Human Rights, and Liberty, and against Authoritarianism, Bigotry, and Oppression, both at home, and abroad.

2. Wallace will campaign among Asian, and Hispanic voters in San Francisco, calling for immigration reform.

3. Wallace will campaign in the industrial city of Pittsburgh, hoping to boost his support among union voters.

Truman will sign both bills

- Truman will make his first visit of the campaign season to New Hampshire, where he broadcasts his ability to lead and his stewardship of America in the last few years. He ties himself to FDR and says that a Democratic legacy will be secured.

- He will then visit New York City for the first time, doing a brief campaign and sitting down with the New York Times to hopefully make an endorsement of the incumbent president.

- Lastly, Barkeley will begin his VP crusade by meeting with Midwestern power brokers
