    PINEAPPLE PRIMARY EVENT!

It's all in the papers with big black letters: "Candidate Shot!

Pres Yates was campaigning in Iowa and was ambushed by a farmer agitated by the heated rhetoric coming from the leftwing of both parties. He took aim and shot Pres Yates at point blank range. [Rolled for Whigs to be the target of the attack and for Yates to be the one attacked].

Pres Yates was rushed to safety but died a few days later of his wounds [rolled 43/50].

Pres Yates passes away at the age of 44. Vice President Silas Holcomb assumes the office during the last days of the administration.

Pretty sure the headline would be "President Shot!" rather than candidate... just saying

    Wall St Whigs

    • Ulysses S Grant (20 year military)
      • Mil +3, Leadership, Expansionist
    • James Harlan (20 year exec)
      • Gov +2, Expansionist, Transportation, Charisma
    • Royal C Taft (20 year backroom)
      • Admin +1, Expansionist, Kingmaker, Technology

Just viewing US Grant come off the career track well after the Civil War got me thinking... can I get clarity on what role being on the Military track has during wars?

I seem to remember reading in a thread career trackers could be killed during battles.

    Is there benefits too?

    Sure thing!

Currently most of the IL house seats are filled by incumbents. The CPU will not challenge an incumbent unless they are extremely unhappy with their party (ideology enthusiasm in game terms). Whenever there has been a opening in the House in IL, the CPU tries to find the candidates to match the state preferred ideology, which is currently Moderates for IL (Lincoln is a Mod so he has a better chance of being chosen). Then it is random which candidates are selected after that, so Lincoln has had the misfortune of not being selected for a House race or, when he has, he has lost the primary. This is in part to there being two powerful factions in IL (they have politicians labeled kingmaker so they get bonuses in primaries), so he has been beaten by those factions if he was chosen. He briefly served in the Senate for a term but was replaced by the human player when he won control of the IL governorship. The other major factor hurting Lincoln is that he once was part of one of the powerful IL factions, but got converted to a less powerful faction and that has stunted his rise.

In regards to his stats, he only has command and legislative so he can only be President or in Congress. This limits him to having to win elections or be appointed to the Senate by his faction winning IL Gov.

He is, in fact, third best Red Party politician in the game.

All of that to say that Lincoln looks amazing on paper but practically has had a hard time getting into office and keeping it.

    Thanks.

    Love the playthrough.

  4. On @OrangeP47 last point, I was shocked when a friend at work who is a US citizen told me you guys have both Federal and State Income Tax. Our constitution reserves this type of taxation for the Federal govt here.

Maybe a Constitutional Amendment making Taxation a solely Federal responsibility?

On Education - banning home schooling, funding for private schools, banning funding for private schools, government control of colleges, banning private investment in colleges, banning specific industries donating to colleges (like big oil), regulation around identifying who has paid for research papers.

Warfare - US gives up Nuclear weapons. US withdraws from NATO. US withdraws from UN treaty, will use chemical weapons if deemed necessary to protect the nation. US signs international land mine ban treaty. Online warfare with other country/nefarious online actor of unknown origin.

Space - US declares space above US to be sovereign, any intrusion into the area to be considered an act of war. Private companies banned from space. US leads push (or joins push) to internationalise space, UN becomes responsible for all future missions through new Agency.

Elections - online voting, reduced age of voting, removal of age limit to run for president,

Regulation - Federal government takes control of work entitlements, total portability of work benefits such as sick leave.

Taxation - Compulsory Superannuation (and the level of minimum contribution of it). Land Tax introduced as a yearly tax on the primary residence, or only on a 2nd and subsequent property, rate of land tax)

Health - Prescription drug pricing regulations (either setting caps on the price that can be charged or subsidising the price directly to the manufacturer)

April Fools Day 2032 - US sets Mar-a-Lago as Presidential residence. 1600 Pennsylvannia Ave turned into the National Museum of 2nd rate Presidents.

  5. Please remember, I'm not American so how realistic they are, I'll defer to those who have studied US history in more depth but from my limited reading...

Federal funding for Pony Express (which ran a loss and closed within a year I believe - maybe a chance of QOL improvement v a chance of an economic loss),

Trans continental railway (Federal speeding up construction providing a QOL v Economic payoff; Gov action for a group of Mid western states on where it meets with proposal providing an economic payoff for increased trade)

Improvement of internal waterways ( I recall this was specifically banned by the Confederate States Constitution so it must have been an issue for a few Southern states leading to actions - but I don't know why).

Can individual states grant voting rights to Indians and/or women for state elections? This may be too difficult to model in the game but it may allow Women to run for Gov even if they can't run for Fed office. Maybe give them access to career tracks even though they can't yet run for office. For historical context -  In Australia some Colonies gave women the right to vote before Federation leading to the situation where women could vote in state elections but not Federally. NSW gave women the vote at a state level after they had the right Federally. Related but different, NZ gave women the right to vote in 1890 but not the right to stand until after 1900.
