  1. Unfortunately, President Harrison has asked Senior General Scott to resign. He does so, reluctantly. In his place, CPUHarrison asks his old friend, former officer in the War of 1812, former Secretary of War, and current Ambassador to France, Lewis Cass, to come back and take a position in the US Army as Senior General. Harrison hopes that his high administrative skill, and his expertise in foreign affairs, will help turn the tide of war against Spain, and help to win out in Mexico.
  2. A true Naval Hero 20 years before he rose to fame in the Civil War. What a guy! And now a 5 military ability!!
  3. CPU Harrison takes the advice of his Sec of State on all accounts.
  4. 1840 playtest- (1842-44) The Senate is tied with 27 Senators in each party. Vice-President Tyler may have to vote to break some ties in the Senate. The Democrats gain control of the House of Representatives after the midterm elections. After a scandal, and gaining the trait easily overwhelmed, Henry Clay is forced to resign from his position as Sec of the Treasury by President William Henry Harrison. Senator James Buchanan of Pennsylvania retires early from the Senate, frustrated with politics. Daniel Webster dies of tuberculosis. Former President and Rep John Quincy Adams dies of dropsy. The US negotiates a treaty with the UK over the Oregon territory. War breaks out with Spain over President Harrison's support of Cuban Rebels in 1840. War also breaks out with Mexico over the annexation of Texas.
  5. @Ich_bin_Tyler CPUIch_bin_Tyler- MD Gov Chapman (1 Gov), having already successfully passed 4 year terms, now moves to pass no term limits for Governor of MD. RI Gov King (2 Gov) wants to Improve a Burgeoning Industry in RI. CPUMrPotatoTed- AL Gov Bagby (1 Gov) wants 4 year terms for Gov. in AL. TN Gov Martin (2 Gov) likewise wants 4 year terms for Gov. in TN. VA Gov Smith (4 Gov) wants no term limits for VA Gov.
  6. CPU President Harrison has a 50/50 chance of keeping the now easily overwhelmed Clay in the cabinet as Sec of the Treasury or dismissing him. Harrison asks Clay to resign, and Clay does. (It was a 50/50 roll). Clay now has no Senate seat and no office so he returns to Kentucky. In his place, Harrison appoints the former Sec of the Treasury, Thomas Ewing of Ohio based on his prior experience in the position. Ewing accepts and is confirmed unanimously by the Senate.
  7. Morehead City was named after him. He also was responsible for the first RR in NC which went from the coast (Morehead City) all the way to Greensboro, and the south to Charlotte. Who is your new GOV of NC to replace Morehead?
  8. CPU President Harrison decides to make some new cabinet choices. For the open position of Key Advisor, Harrison taps Whig William H Seward of New York (CPULars faction). Seward accepts. For Sec of State, Harrison asks Democrat John C. Calhoun of South Carolina (CPUShortKing faction). Calhoun considers it, and even dines at the White House with the President. However, after careful consideration, Senator Calhoun decides not to leave the Senate and rejects the President's offer. Harrison then asks Democrat Richard Rush of Pennsylvania (CPUMark_W faction) to be Secretary of State, and Rush accepts. Harrison asks long time Whig, Henry Clay (CPUVols21 faction) to become the Secretary of the Treasury. Clay agrees. With relations with Spain deteriorating fast, and a possible war over the Texas annexation coming, Harrison asks Whig Edward Bates of Missouri (CPUWillthescout7 faction) to be Secretary of War. Bates accepts. Attorney General and Whig John J Crittenden of Kentucky (CPULars faction) retains his office as Attorney General. Samuel L. Southard of New Jersey (CPULars), a Whig, is offered and accepts the position of Secretary of the Navy. Harrison reaches out to Whig James M. Clayton, of Delaware, ambassador to Spain, to be the new Postmaster General. So, the Senate needs to vote and consent on the new cabinet members- Rush, Clay, Bates, Southard, and Clayton. Factions need to update their sheets.

  11. It is now time for State Governors to appoint Class III Senators. This will mean 1 Senator needs to be appointed from each of the following states- AL, AR, CT, GA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MD, MO, NC, NH, NY, OH, PA, SC, VT. The new TX Gov will appoint 2 Senators since it is a new state. CPU Whig Gov John G. Chapman of MD re-appoints Senator John L. Kerr (2 Legislative). CPU Democrat Gov Arthur Bagby of AL appoints Benjamin Fitzpatrick (3 Legislative). 17 Senate appointments remain. @Ich_bin_Tyler@OrangeP47@Willthescout7
  12. President Harrison will pick two men from his faction to fill the two Supreme Court openings. John Black of MS & his Key Advisor, Jacob Collamer of VT.
  13. Pres Harrison will support a Pro-military increase policy & will Advocate Manifest Destiny (as he has the Expansionist Trait).
  14. Rep. John W Jones (4) of Virginia proposes to establish the Department of the Interior to help the Federal government manage new lands beyond the Mississippi. He suggests that it become a new Cabinet level department within the Executive Branch. Rep. Reuben Chapman (2) of Alabama proposes to Fund a Federal waterway improvement of the Tennessee River to aid in transport of goods and to improve communications and infrastructure in the country.

For the Popular Sovereignty Democrats- AL Arthur P Bagby- Improve Agriculture. GA Gov Charles McDonald- Improve Agriculture. TN Gov James K. Polk- Improve Agriculture. VA John Rutherford- 4 year terms for Gov.
  16. "The National Whig" October 28, 1840 RIOTS- New York City, New York- Mayor Isaac L. Varian issued a statement today calling for calm after a large demonstration against Irish Catholics turned violent. "We want peace and calm here in the city" the mayor stated. There was no immediate confirmation if any one had been killed, but a number of people were seen bruised and bloody. Several shops in the area had signs in the window saying "Help Wanted. No Irish Need Apply." TEXAS- Washington DC- People all over the nation are rejoicing! The Republic of Texas, which won it's independence from Mexico a few years ago, has petitioned President Harrison to become a part of the United States. Harrison, a wise and decisive leader, promptly accepted the offer and sent the matter to Congress for a vote. House and Senate leaders have not yet stated when a vote will happen, but we are hopeful that it will be soon. However, one Southern Senator stated that, "Texas should not only be brought into the Union, it should be divided into at least three states." If Texas is admitted as it exists now, it would become the largest state in the country. However, the Southern border is still in some dispute with Mexico. That issue could lead to a more strained relationship with our Southern neighbor if not resolved. CUBA- Washington DC- President Harrison, while not making a direct announcement, has privately pledged to support the current revolt against Spanish rule in Cuba. The Spanish Ambassador reacted harshly, speaking very quickly in a language that the editors of this paper are unfamiliar with. The words that were understood, however, could not be published here either. Our nations economy is reported as "booming", and the armed forces of the United States are prepared for any potential impending war, with Spain or Mexico. The Navy has recently commissioned several new ships, and the Army is testing a new type of firing system for their muskets known as the percussion cap. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail over the Cuba Crisis. CONVENTION- New Orleans, LA- It was announced yesterday that the next National Whig Convention will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 1, 1844. All loyal Whig politicians should make plans to attend.
  17. CPU President Harrison has, indeed, some difficult choices to make regarding foreign policy. Looking at the overall picture, CPU Harrison decides it would be better to try and bring TX into the Union and calls upon Congressional leaders to take a vote on the annexation of the Republic of Texas. Furthermore, seeing Lopez and his forces try and battle for independence reminds the CPU President of America's struggle for independence from a European power, and he recalls leading his own personal battle at Tippecanoe. He also solidly believes in the Monroe Doctrine. Despite the current strained relations with the Kingdom of Spain, and the possibility of reducing them further, CPU President Harrison sees that his Whig Party could benefit greatly from supporting Lopez and reducing Spanish influence in the New World. CPU Harrison selects B on both options.
  18. Sorry, let me throw out a scenario/example. Your faction has to replace a politician. There is an open seat say. Would you be more likely/gain more points by appointing a level 2 from your own faction, even though you as the faction leader are a Moderate and the level 2 replacement is a Conservative OR would it be better to appoint someone who was a Moderate & level 3, but they are not from your faction, and are of the opposite party. So, better skills, same ideology, and different party and faction OR person with less skills and different ideology, but same faction as you. I hope I'm saying this correctly...
  19. So I guess I'll ask the question here...in this game...what matters more? Ideology or Faction? Would you select someone from a rival party with the best traits and same ideology, or pick someone from your faction & party with lower traits but not necessarily your ideology? Thanks!
  20. President William Henry Harrison sends Federal Aid to Michigan and offers his prayers to all the farmers and families impacted.
  21. "The National Whig" June 13, 1840. Philadelphia, PA- Admiral Isaac Hull was reported to have been killed in a bar fight yesterday. The suspects have not been identified. Other patrons claim the men "insulted the reputation and integrity of the US Navy" to which Hull took offense. According to witnesses, the hero of the War of 1812 then defended himself after one of the assailants struck him. The Admiral managed to knock down three men, but suffered a fatal blow to the head with a heavy candlestick from a fourth assailant. The suspects fled the scene and have not been captured. Funeral arrangements for Admiral Hull have not yet been announced, but President Harrison proclaimed that, "Hull was a national hero. He was a great leader, and the Navy will miss his presence very much." There is some talk amongst members of Congress of having the Admiral "lie in state" at the capitol building in Washington DC.
  22. Moderate Whigs select John G Chapman as the new Governor of Maryland.
  23. @Willthescout7@Ich_bin_Tyler @OrangeP47 As the director of a Civil War Museum, I am VERY interested to see how this plays out. It's one of the areas (other than the Independence Era) I'm most excited to play and see how it develops. I'll volunteer to help out in anyway that I can with this play through. I know you are doing mostly CPU play through, but if you need an extra human player to cover, please consider me. I'm not currently playing any of the other test games and recently turned in the last of my graduate work for my Master's, so I have some spare time on my hands this summer. Thanks!
