Domestic stability is almost at it's lowest point in the nation's young history. President Buchanan, a northern politician with southern sympathies, occupies the White House, but his party didn't do too well in the recent midterm elections. The Democrats have lost the House of Representatives, and now the Republicans control it by 36 votes out of 236 votes total. However, the Democrats have managed to hold onto the Senate, by 4 votes, mostly due to controlling almost all the Governor seats south of the Mason-Dixon line. The Supreme Court is still dominated by Democrats under the watchful eye of aging Chief Justice Taney of Maryland. The admission of two new free states, Kansas and Oregon, didn't help the domestic stability situation. Many Northerners are beginning to see that the availability of cheap labor in the South, namely chattel slavery, is a threat to them, both morally and economically. If slavery is allowed to expand out into the territories, what does that say about the future of the United States? Can the nation exist permanently as half free and half slave? Northern sympathies towards abolitionists is growing. It has long been a cause of the Left Wing Progressives, but can it now start to pull in Liberals and Moderates to it's ranks? Can the fledging Republican Party field a credible Presidential candidate with broad appeal in the 1860 election? On the other side, Southerners are becoming increasingly alarmed that outsiders, "Yankees", want to interfere with some of their long standing policies and institutions such as states rights, slavery, and the tariff. They view Northerners as hypocrites who benefit from the institution of slavery economically (through the importation, refining, and spinning of cotton) and then denigrate and chastise plantation owners in the same sentence. They believe that Northern factory workers, many of them newly arrived immigrants to the nation, are treated the same as enslaved people are. Right Wing Populists in the country will be getting a boost in the next election due to the wide spread visibility of their causes. Both they and the Traditionalists are heavily favored in the Southern states. While the revenue and budget situation is looking good for the nation, the economic stability is questionable. While not an all out Panic, there was a run on the markets a month or so before the election. This lack of economic stability likely caused some voters to question the ability of the Democrats on the economy. There is growing uncertainty moving forward on the economic situation, which only adds to the rising level of anxiety in the country. Will the new Congress be able to take any action on the issue of slavery? Will it try to adjust the tariff? What will the new cabinet of President Buchanan look like? Will he continue to appease Southern slave owners and attempt to "kick the can down the road" on several key issues, or will he take a stand in his last two years as President? What does the economic future of the nation look like, and how will it be impacted by westward expansion? Who will the Democrats select as a replacement for Buchanan, who has pledged to serve only one term in office? Whatever happens, there is no doubt that the next two years will be very impactful for the future of the nation.

So there are two bills that passed that are in direct competition with one another- Supreme Court Justice number. How would this be handled? There was also a 5% and a 25% tariff proposed but I think only the 25% one passed.

End of Half-Term; Retirements- Despite losing their seats in Washington DC, both Senator Stephen Douglas and Rep. Alexander Stephens decide to remain in politics. However, RedMod faction leader John Bell, having been replaced by the Tennessee Governor in the US Senate, decides to retire at age 62 (rolled 7/25). @Bloot911 the only choice for your new faction leader is Rep. Amos Granger of New York. He is not obscure, but does not have leadership. None of the defeated Governors retire from public life. Former Senator George W Jones of Iowa, having been replaced in the Senate, retires from politics at 54. @10centjimmy BlueCons Former Senator Josiah J Evans of SC, having been replaced in the Senate, retires from politics at 72. @Euri For being old and still in office- Chief Justice Taney loses 1 ability in Admin and is now a 2 Admin. Sec of State Cass gains Pliable End of half-term penalties- For having more free states than slave states; Speaker Orr (Euri) loses 250 points, Senate Pro-Tempore Thomas Jefferson Rusk (BlueCons) loses 250 points. Both get -1 in the next election. All Moderate factions lose 250 points. Domestic stability decreases by 2 points to 2, Threats of Rebellion and very much still in crisis.
