Interesting how the electoral race was much closer in 1880 but yet Cobb won by a much bigger popular vote then 4 years earlier. Shows off how Speed almost won just by winning a bunch a states by very narrow margins.

I shared in the chat some anomalies in the votes. Cobb won KY, Speed’s home state, 80-20. He also won MA 63-37. 
 

Cobb really won heavily the popular vote in many state and Speed got lucky to win as many as he did.

1880 Gubernatorial Election

Despite Pres Cobb's close victory at the top of the ticket, Democrats enjoyed more successes down ballot. Dems managed to flip CT, DE, IA, KS, NC, UC, and WV from the Whigs; meanwhile, the Whigs flipped back DU, NV, NY, and TN.

Mirroring their win at the top of the ticket, House Dems narrowly scrape a majority by winning 150-147. Dems were able to swing many seats in the border states, Midwest, NY and even winning a seat in MA, thanks to Cobb's victory there.

Another thing to note is while Bourbon Democrats have the Presidency retirements have hit them hard the past few cycles (all our factions really), I've noticed a general thinning of the talent pool.  Probably in 4-8 years there won't be enough people to contest every district of PA for example, which is probably realistic, but it's a big change.
