He picked it up when he was announced as VP. So he was a Lackey to Granger.

Speed: Shows undying loyalty to Granger

Granger: Insults Speed every chance he gets and inexplicably still keeps him on the ticket

1880 Presidential Election (383 EVs, 192 to win)

In an election that was much closer than expected by both parties, Pres Howell Cobb wins 196 EVs to James Speed's 187. Four states were tied (IN, OR, RI, VT) and Speed won three of those. Speed was also able to narrowly win many states by less then 1% (IN, LC, ME, MN, NY, RI, WI). Luck was on Speed's side but not enough to win outright. Pres Cobb comes out as the winner but with concerns among the party about the down ballot impacts. Cobb also wins the popular vote 55%-43%-2%.

Fun fact: if Winfield Scott Hancock has won the 3 states that Cobb flipped from IRL (IN, OH, and OR), he would have won with 195 electoral votes to Arthur's 174

There's a lot more flips that just that and IN isn't a flip.
