The argument that the South was "2nd class citizens" is ridiculous. Their states were inflated in political power by the 3/5th Compromise. They tended to get all sorts of powerful positions to appease them because they were the most volatile. After slavery, you have the tariff, internal improvements, banking, and federal power as issues. All of these were distant behind slavery.
