1959 NFL Power Rankings

Peak players have been processed. The records below are from the 1958 season. Rebels and Viceroys have really improved. Mustaches are the best team in the West. Monarchs have collapsed. Yodelers are the weakest team and could use better OLmen to help Jim Brown. Yodelers, unfortunately, have top 3 clutch, so they could win games in the last moment and end up with a mediocre 1st round pick. Of the top 3 teams, Viceroys have one of the worst special teams, which will likely hurt them. Top Hats are a wild card because they have a top 3 pass and rush offense. Mustaches have a bottom 3 pass offense, so a team like the Cardinals or Moose could win the West. On paper, the Championship should be Rebels vs Mustaches, but I think it could be Rebels or Painted Buntings vs. Cardinals or Moose with the Top Hats as the Wild Card that could get in.

Knowing my luck I'll go 8-4 and miss the playoffs entirely...

It is a lot more random now. I'm not sure why. It used to be reliable Championships for the Cardinals and Top Hats. I think it's mainly because the top teams don't necessarily have both the top offense and defense and special teams and clutch. The top teams often have at least one weakness or are at least weaker than the weaker teams in some area.

Clutch is kind of huge because it allows for a 50/50 chance in a game that is 30/70 or 40/60 if the clutch is higher. The Yodelers were the worst team one year, but had great clutch, and so ended up 6-6. One could say George Blanda had 6 Quarterback Comebacks that season.

You really want a balanced team.

1959 NFL Regular Season Standings!

The Sad Clowns blunder into the Championship for the 2nd time this decade. They won 4 major upsets, beating the Cardinals and the Mustaches in both home and away games. My Painted Buntings greatly underperformed. I thought the Top Hats would do better than 6-6 as well. The Colonels lost every single game despite hiring historically legendary coach Vince Lombardi.

1959 League Leaders

QB Highest Comp% QB Lowest Comp% QB Most Yards QB Most TDs QB Fewest Interceptions

Norm Van Brocklin Earl Morrall Johnny Unitas Norm Van Brocklin Bart Starr

Unitas has won Most Yards 3x, while Van Brocklin has won Most TDs 3x. Morrall is actually good, but he's on a terrible team.

QB Most Interceptions QB Most Wins QB Most Losses QB Most Sacked QB Fewest Sacked

George Ratterman Bart Starr George Ratterman George Ratterman Norm Van Brocklin

Ratterman has "won" most sacked 4x!

QB Most Fumbles QB Fewest Fumbles QB Rushing QB Rushing TDs Rushing Yards

George Ratterman Bart Starr Jack Kemp Jack Kemp Paul Lowe

Kemp has won QB Rushing 3x in a row. Lowe is a rookie RB.

Rushing TDs Rushing AVG high Rushing AVG low RB Fumbles Low RB Fumbles High

Paul Hornung John David Crow Tank Younger Joe Perry Tank Younger

Hornung also is the kicking leader.

Recs by RB Best Blocking FB Most Receptions Most Rec Yards Highest Rec Avg

Lenny Moore Eddie Price Bobby Mitchell Raymond Berry Max McGee

Moore has had the most Recs by a RB 3x in a row. Price last won Best Blocking FB in 1952. Berry has gotten most Rec Yards 3x.

Most Rec TDs Best Rec TE Best Blocking TE Best Pass OL Best Rush OL

Raymond Berry Ernie Warlick Max Boydston Jerry Kramer Jim Parker

This is the first year of the Best Blocking TE award.

Sacks Forced Fumbles Red Zone Def Tackles Interceptions

Doug Atkins Archie Matsos Sam Huff Joe Fortunato Jack Butler

Atkins was the sack leader in 1954.

Pass Defended FG% Pts by Kicker Punt AVG Punt Yrds Total Yrds KR/PR

Night Train Lane Paul Hornung Paul Hornung Ed Brown Jerry Norton Jon Arnett

Hornung also led in rushing TDs. If you count those points with his FG and XP points, he's probably leading the league by a massive margine. His team went 11-1 too.

1959 Championship!

Rebels @matthewyoung123 vs Sad Clowns @Cal

Rebels needed to role a 1-85, and they got a 47. They were clear favorites, so let's say the score was 35-14. This was sort of a run-of-the-mill Championship game with the expected winner winning by a score that most people assumed they'd win by.

Championship MVP: QB Bart Starr
