A lot of changes occurred in the factions. The righwing of the Democrats became less expansionists and militaristic. The faction of the President became very focused on expansion and the military. Leftwing of the Dems focus more on good government. Overall the factions are becoming more diverse in their lobbies and interests than before.

Leadership Elections

House

In the House the Henry A Wise of VA will challenge Speaker Thurlow Weed of NY.

Ballot 1 (need 82 votes)

  • Wise: 62
    • Trad Whigs: 25
    • Abolitionists: 37 (highest Legis, random)
  • Weed: 100
    • Mod Whigs: 34
    • Wall St Whigs: 30 (highest PV)
    • Lib Whigs: 36 (highest PV)

Thurlow Weed wins reelection as Speaker despite the two wings of the party banding together. Weed gains nothing. Weed's election makes Mods happy. Mods +1 Red.

Senate

After the election of Francis Granger as President, there is a battle for President Pro Tempore of the Senate.

  • Abolitionists: Daniel Clark of NH
  • Mod Whigs: Calvin Galusha Coolidge of VT
  • Wall St Whigs: William Higby of UC

Ballot 1 (need 25 votes)

  • Clark: 15
    • Abolitionists: 10

  • Coolidge: 10
    • Mod Whigs: 10
  • Higby: 23
    • Wall St Whigs: 5
    • Lib Whigs: 18 (random)

No one wins on ballot 1, so Coolidge gets dropped and we go to ballot 2.

Ballot 2 (need 25 votes)

  • Clark: 43
    • Abolitionists: 10
    • Trad Whigs: 5 (highest PV)
    • Mod Whigs: 10 (closest ideology, random)
    • Lib Whigs: 18 (highest PV)
  • Higby: 5
