Drums of War: An All-CPU Playtest of the Civil War

I would have to agree that these cabinet picks are very much the backbenchers of the party. The only one with any kind of exposure to the party apparatus in this timeline is J Wright Gordon who was an inoffensive Gov of Michigan.

Seems like the philosophy of Granger is to pick nobodies so that there isn’t anything to criticize.

TBH considering the several consecutive convention absolute madhouses, narratively, it would probably be at least worth a shot.

Cabinet Confirmation Votes

Attorney General John A Bingham is confirmed 57-15 ✔️

State Sen Henry B Anthony is confirmed 58-13 ✔️

Treasury Thomas T Crittenden is not confirmed 24-48

War William A Graham is not confirmed 17-55

Interior Simeon B Chittenden is confirmed 55-17 ✔️

PM Gen Percy Walker is not confirmed 5-67

Ambassador to UK Frederick Low is not confirmed 15-57

Ambassador to Japan Ralph Metcalf is not confirmed 23-49

Ambassador to France Edgar Cowan is not confirmed 25-47

Ambassador to China J Wright Gordon  is confirmed 48-24 ✔️

Pres Granger takes his first hits from a Whig controlled Senate as they fail to confirm the men that they deem not skilled (Admin 1).

For these failures to confirm, Whigs lose 3 Party Pref as the blow back falls upon the president. Senators that voted no on Low, Metcalf, and Cowan gain Integrity for not allowing such untalented men represent American values abroad. Low, Matcalf, and Cowan gain Controversial.

Pres Pro Temp Clark will name 5 replacement options for the 6 failed nominees. Pres Granger will pick one of them from each to take the office.

The Mormons had found a home in the Salt Lake Valley, but anti-Mormonism is growing strong in both parties. Recently, Mormon settlers and federal forces have clashed, leading in some deaths. Our government used a military escort to place a federal official in office, fearing a potential attacks by the settlers. We have recently learned that the Mormons have attacked a wagon full of non-Mormon settlers.

John Brown was eventually killed by one of his own after several governors granted clemency for whomever captured or killed John Brown. • Pres Granger must decide:
    • A) Secession is clearly illegal! Call on the military and state governments to form a Napoleonic-sized army to quell the rebellion! We are the UNITED States of America. Don't let these traitors forget about it. For those who have long desired an end to slavery in America, the day will soon come.
    • B) We need to resolve this diplomatically and make it clear that the federal government won't interfere with slavery. As a token gesture, I will strictly enforce the fugitive slave act, if they end their rebellion.
    • C) As the publisher of the NY Tribune says, "Wayward Sisters, depart in peace."

Selection of New Faction Leaders

Since Govs Cobb and Clark left for the CSA, the Conservative Dems (@OrangeP47) and Pop Sov Dems (@matthewyoung123) will need to select new Faction Leaders.

Meanwhile, @vcczar a question post-secession:

  • What do we do with loyalists who held office?
    • Example, Robert E Lee is Gov of VA and he remained loyal to the Union. Will he remain Gov of VA or should he lose that title since the state seceded?
    • What would we do with the Reps and Sens that stayed loyal? Do they stay in office or are those offices removed too?

As the states are unavailable, they'll "lose the office," even though in real life the government would probably consider them still validly holding those offices. For game purposes, they're unemployed and stateless, which means they can hold appointed office, but they can't run for president, VP, US Sen, US Rep, or Gov unless they move. Basically, they're cabinet, cabinet-level, ambassador, or military.

Reverdy Johnson of MD will be the new leader for the Pop Sov Democrats who will now adopt the name, Copperhead Democrats.
