@Timur@MrPotatoTed Can you guys do an announcement post? We are waiting for everyone to do one before the RP can start.

(Sorry, only have time for a brief write up today -- it's my daughter's 8th birthday!)

Senator Ted Kennedy announced that he will once again run for President, following his failed interparty challenge to President Carter last cycle.  He promised his campaign will highlight the continued need for expansion on voting rights, championing women's rights, funding against the AIDS epidemic, ensuring healthcare coverage for the unemployed, and ending Reagan's aggressively dangerous provocations against the Soviet Union.

Asked what lessons he learned from his failed run in 1980, Kennedy countered that he hoped it was Democrat voters who had learned something.  "I tried to warn them that Carter was on the wrong path.  They didn't listen, and they lost.  Now I hope they'll listen as I lay out my plan to stop Reagan."

Joe Biden has been imagining this moment for more than 50 years. It's not exactly the triumph he had in mind. - The Washington PostThis was it, the moment Joe Biden had been planning since 1972. The moderate senator from Delaware, perhaps foolishly, believed that he could be the one to take on the monolith of a politician named Ronald Reagan. After all, with how big of a loss was dealt to President Carter just 4 years ago, how could any democrat reasonably believe that they could actually win? Well, Joe Biden did. The man was no stranger to beating popular incumbents, taking down J. Caleb Boggs in 1972 despite the Nixon landslide of that year. Biden had all that was needed to take down a man like Reagan: Charisma, energy, and vigor. He would present heavily with his family, knowing how voters could be wooed over by the sight of what appeared to be the perfect American nuclear family. Biden would focus on his record working across the aisle, and present himself as a moderate solution, one who could unify the nation for 8 years and leave it off in a better place than where it started. Could he do it? Only time would tell.

Lyndon LaRouche: The Conspiracist Who Earned a Following - POLITICO

LaRouche announces his campaign starting his rally with a classical music concert. He promises that he will not serve the interests of the British, claiming that their Queen is involved in drug trade. He calls Henry Kissinger "Satanic" and that anyone who Jimmy Carter backs must be stopped at all costs.

Announcements:

Fritz Hollings (3) Hollings is not well recieved. While his announcement is well thought out it doesn't strike the right cord among modern democrats.

John Glenn (5) John Glenn gives a good speech but seems to generate little excitement around his campaign.

Geraldine Ferraro (4) Ferraro gives a decent announcement but her lack of name recognition means that it doesn't go far.

Shirley Chisholm (3) Chisholm's radical announcement doesn't quite land. While she was always going to be controversial the lack of excitement makes her more so.

Henry Cisneros (9) Cisneros explodes onto the scene! Whether it be his youth, charisma or just the lack of excitement around the other candidates Cisneros is already making a splash!

Jesse Jackson (3) Falling the same way as Chisholm Jackson's progressive announcement rubs some the wrong way

Ted Kennedy (10!) Kennedy is running!! Cheers surround the youngest Kennedy's announcement and crowds swarm him as he leaves. Interviewers have a hard time picking up his responses over the crowds noise. The Democrats love a Kennedy.

Joe Biden (10!) Biden comes out of nowhere! He's young but experienced and has taken on "unbeatable" Republicans before! Biden brings a new youthful energy to the party, edging on Cisneros's territory.

Lyndon LaRouche (6) LaRouche is far from popular but he can stir up the media. His odd announcement stays in the news.

Polls:

Ted Kennedy - 24.1% (+2.1%)

John Glenn - 11.5% (-0.5%)

Joe Biden - 10.2% (+2.2%)

Fritz Hollings - 7.9% (-1.1%)

Henry Cisneros - 5.8% (+2.5%)

Jesse Jackson - 3.2% (-0.8%)

Shirley Chisholm - 3.1% (-0.7%)

Geraldine Ferraro - 1.9% (-0.3%)

Lyndon LaRouche - 0.5% (+0.1%)

Henry Cisneros goes after Gary Hart's endorsement, citing how both of them represent a moderate future for the Democratic party

Cisneros then commissions Raymond Strother to lead his media campaign, with the first piece being a television ad in the early primary states that capitalizes on Cisneros' youth, and bipartisanship.

Cisneros goes to Iowa, seeking out Reagan Democrats, to see if he can sway them back into his colum.

ngs Jesse Jackson -

(9) Alabama isn't the most progressive state, but that doesn't mean no progs are there! Jackson taps into an un-tapped faction, they're not the biggest but a progressive being seen on TV with a cheering crowd in Alabama is a feat!

(6) Surprisingly, the Georgia crowd isn't as welcoming as Alabama. Jackson makes some solid points and comes across well but is unable to repeat his success.

(2) Florida isn't the most receptive to radical ideas. Jackson seems to have trouble holding on the to the electricity that he found in Alabama of all places.

Overall: 2, Jackson makes a string start but wanes soon after

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Glenn -

(2) Glenn comes across as pandering, trying to appear blue collar after a technocratic announcement isn't the best strategy.

(8) Glenn is a hit! Sticking to the message of the campaign and throwing in some Cold War shtick seems to be the formula.

(6) The former VP isn't going to involve himself so soon, however, Glenn isn't rejected and the campaigning in Minnesota goes well enough.

Overall: 1, Glenn stumbled at the beginning of the week but managed to style it out

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fritz Hollings -

(4) Heflin refuses, it's too early in the day to announce anything just yet.

(6) Herchler doesn't endorse just yet, but gives Hollings a good word. Wyoming is welcoming.

(9) Nunn endorses! Endorsements this early are rare so Hollings seems to already have something that his contenders don't! This could legitimize him...

Overall: 4, Holllings is playing establishment and it's working.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Henry Cisneros -

(3) Cisneros should be endorsing Hart. The Colorado Senator is high profile and a strong endorsement, he's not going to stake anything on an underdog unless something big happens.

(7) The ad is a success! Reagan is the oldest ever President and from a Red state. Cisneros is one of the youngest contenders and... From a red tilting state, optics are good,

(8) Cisneros comes across well, Reagan democrats are a mix of those who think that the President is doing a good job and are uninspired by the Democrats. Is Reagan doing a god job? Yes. Is Cisneros inspiring them? Yes

Overall: 3, Cisneros has a long road ahead of him but if he keeps up is pace he could get there.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shirley Chisholm

(4)(5)(8) Chisholm goes at Vermont with tunnel vision and it looks to be working.

Overall: 2, Chisholm is building up a firm north east base.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Geraldine Ferraro

(7) A New Yorker doesn't have to go far to get to New Hampshire, they have a fair amount in common because of this and Ferraro is able to hit home.

(7) Harkin endorses! The Iowa senator does a lot to add legitimacy to the Representatives campaign, on top of that the Iowa rally is a hit!

(3) Ferraro doesn't manage to keep up her streak in Florida. She doesn't hugely embarrass herself but that's the only positive.

Overall: 2, Ferraro gives a flying start but starts dragging her feet.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ted Kennedy

(4) Brown doesn't outright decline, but he ran against Kennedy and Carter in 1980 so the Massachusetts Senator has to prove himself.

(10!) Ted Kennedy is a Kennedy, and that comes with a certain amount of Charisma. That shows in Iowa and like his announcement Kennedy is swarmed as he leaves the stage and can barely talk to the media over the noise of the excited crowd.

(2) Kennedy comes across a little too angry. The attack doesn't really land and the Senator doesn't come out looking great.

Overall: 2, Kennedy stumbled but his hit rally in Iowa manages to overpower the gaffes on the news.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joe Biden

(2) Protecting children from drugs isn't really a new idea nor one that people need a politician to specify. Biden doesn't make a mark.

(9) Byrd endorses! With a strong speech delivered by the minority leader on TV Biden is given a great bump of support.

(2) Biden says this while there is a Kennedy running.

Overall: -2, Despite a strong endorsement Biden fails to deliver in person.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lyndon LaRouche

(5) LaRouche makes a good point but delivers in a bland way.

(2) After the US stayed out of the Falklands the point doesn't make LaRouche seem intelligent.

(7) LaRouche makes a decent point sprinkled with fear mongering. An excellent recipe.

Overall: -1, LaRouche isn't popular and despite a good appearance he his still held back by some bad ones.

1.  Teddy heads to Philadelphia for a rally, where he'll seek the endorsement of beloved television star and definitely family-friendly, scandal-free, aspirational black person Bill Cosby.  ;c)

2.  Then it's off to Detroit for another rally, and seeking the endorsement of hometown hero and PI Magnum himself, Tom Selleck!

3.  Down to Dallas, Texas, where he'll hold a rally in Dealey Plaza -- the very location where JFK was shot, promising to deliver on the promises made by both of his brothers before their lives were so cruely taken from them.
