GENERAL EVENTS

Major Diplomatic Conference

@Vols21 can either send himself or his secretary of state.

Sec of State Elliot RIchardson packs his bag for the diplomatic conference of G7 countries which is being held in Rome.    President Bricker and the other leaders will pose for photo ops while the diplomats hammer out some mutually beneficial deals.

(pretty much have to go this route since it only grades Admin) - go earn your money Elliot!

Nationalist March

Hit a 7, needed > 20. Domestic Stability falls by 1!

President Bricker chooses Option A - condemn this vitriolic march   (roll for a +1 to party preference)

Race Riots

@Vols21 John Bricker can take either -1 domestic stability, or send in the national guard for -1 party preference

Option B (or as we call it door #3)   We will use the same approach as last time and defer to the Governors to handle the riots within their states.    The Gov's have a chance to avoid the hit to domestic stability (without the penalty of sending in the Guard) and whichever is successful gets some gains..

  • Elliot Richardson succeeds! (rolls 91). Relations with France, Spain, Germany, China, Russia, Japan, and Israel increase by 1! Credit increases to 7!
  • Condemnation touches the minds and souls of the nation. Party preference increases by 1 for the GOP! (rolls 100)
  •   Leaving it to the states (again). Trads, cons, and rw pops gain one enthusiasm for the GOP, while progs, libs and lw pops lose 1. Bricker gains +1 in the Deep South in 1964 (rolled 94).
    • Mike Foster, George C. Wallace, and Mike Barnett restore order gaining +1 admin and "efficient" (rolls 86).

Scripted Events: 1962 - 1964

  • Kosciuszko Makes US Permanent Residence
  • Martin Luther King Jr Seeks Political Office: He'll be drafted in 1964.
  • Nuclear Test Ban Treaty:
    • There is no nation on earth that wishes to see a nuclear war. Many experts believe the testing of nuclear weapons are also dangerous to humans and the environment. While we can't get a comprehensive test ban at this point, it seems our diplomats and Russian diplomats are willing to greatly restrict the testing of nuclear weapons.
    • @Vols21 to SIGN THE TREATY or DON'T SIGN THE TREATY

Starting tomorrow I am departing for my honeymoon. This trip will last for a week and during that time I will not be accessing the forum or the google sheet. Vols has agreed to handle any faction decisions that need to be made during this time and has marching orders. If something desperately needs my attention, some of Ya'll have my number.

Have fun! If you're flying, don't stress the air travel. It's a pain in the butt right now but it's just about getting there.

Tip O'Neill - All politics is local. - Home | FacebookLyndon Johnson and the "Johnson Treatment" | National Portrait Gallery

A Political Marriage

The finest match makers in Paris couldn't have picked a more perfect pair than Lyndon B Johnson and Thomas Tip O'Neill. Both grew up politicking from a young age. While other teenagers tick or treated in October, LBJ and Tip knocked on doors asking for votes. They both idolized FDR. They both had a deep and profound connection with the working class and poor of America. For LBJ it came from his time teaching school children in rural Texas. For Tip it came the working class neighborhoods of Cambridge Mass. Both men had a strong desire to pass civil rights. America couldn't be whole until everyone had full citizenship. Both had fathers who won elected office in local and state politics. Both men wanted to build on their father's legacy by getting national office.

Both men enjoyed their drink. Both men enjoyed governing by force. Both men loved looking at the faces of their opponents just after their rivals lost a big vote. However both men were likable. You didn't want to like them but you couldn't help it.

When the Democrats took the majority in 62, Tip got his dream job, Speaker of the House of Representatives. Despite all his wheeling and dealing, Tip got his position thanks to one man---Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson. Johnson saw a like minded, tough legislator in O'Neill and made the man Speaker.

With Lyndon Johnson and Tip O'Neill leading their charge the Democratic Congressional majority was ready to lead. Ready to fight. Ready to deal. Ready to move America forward.

Sometimes politics can lead to strange bedfellows, this wasn't one of those political marriages. Tip and Lyndon were meant for one another. John Bricker could have his golf course and state dinners. Lyndon and Tip had beer, boxing and now they had power. Let the legislative games of 1962-1963 commence.
