New York City 2021 Mayoral Election Roleplay

Okay, I did not expect to be delayed as I was tonight, but I consider myself way too tired to do rolls right now, and I know @Zenobiylhas been preoccupied for the past few days, so I'm extending the deadline until 12:00 AM starting off the 22nd.

1.Yang will hit the Times Square with his volunteers shaking hands, taking selfies and handing campaign material to people

2.Yang will hold online town hall titled "Not Left,Not Right,Forward!", highlighting himself as a candidate of realistic progressive solutions instead of ideological radicalism.

3.Yang will sit down for an interview on Real Time with Bill Maher, hoping Bill likes his campaign enough to give him endorsement on air.

Times Square: 6/10. Yang's a likeable figure who's famous enough to gather quite a few New Yorkers around him and his accompanying volunteers as he hits Times Square.

Online Town Hall: 5/10. The townhall doesn't gather an overwhelming amount of attention, and Yang fails to strengthen his support among progressives or moderates with his rhetoric.

Bill Maher: 1/10! Yang will end up being challenged on the realism and effects of his basic income plan on-air by Maher, and will end up in a heated argument where not only does Maher come prepared with soundly-researched arguments, but Yang becomes flustered and angry as he misquotes multiple statistics, something pointed out by Maher and the media as his time on the show is panned.

Overall: -4. Yang has an only minorly successful time on the campaign trail, only to suffer from a bruising appearance on Real Time.

1.Eric Adams campaigns in Staten Island. He seeks the endorsement of Mark Murphy and his newly created Staten Island First Party

2.Eric Adams campaigns in Brooklyn.

3.Eric Adams seeks the endorsement of the New York Independence Party

Mark Murphy: 2/10. Murphy rejects Adams almost immediately, saying that he simply doesn't trust Adams to hear the interests of Staten Island, and considers him to just be a part of the NYC establishment which has failed the borough for far too long.

Brooklyn: 3/10. Adams will be heckled by progressive activists as he attempts to spread his message, with the activists attempting to challenge him on both policy and his record as he tries to speak to Brooklynites.

NYIP: 5/10. Adams isn't the first-choice of the organization, but he faces no significant problems reaching out to the party, though he fails to make headway.

Overall: -5. Adams faces bitter rejection and progressive disturbances on the trail, making for a weak turn.

1. Donovan will once again seek the endorsement of former vice president Al Gore Promising to make New York City the green energy capital.

2. Donovan will campaign in Harlem hoping to have a broad coalition of minority voters to deliver him a decisive victory.

3. Donovan will go on Bill Maher Where he will attempt to get national attention for his campaign

Al Gore: 7/10. Donovan will regain some ground with Gore and will reopen the door for him to get involved in the race, though a decision hasn't been reached.

Harlem: 5/10. Donovan's minority support is rather weak, even with recent outreach, and Donovan fails to find his success of past in Harlem this time around, though no damage is done.

Bill Maher: 1/10. Just like with Yang, Maher feels like putting up a fight with Donovan, challenging him relentlessly on NYC housing after a source close to the NYTs told Maher of Donovan's struggles in the area(M: See last turn's rolls). Once again Donovan completely flubs, making a fool of himself on national TV as the former HUD Secretary is left embarrassed and flustered.

Overall: -3. Despite making up some ground with Gore, Donovan fails to make gains on the trail and leaves a sour mark on national TV.

1. Wiley will stay away from television advertisements and instead put out a lovely print ad.

2. Wiley will continue her assault on Yang's ignorance in New York politics for many years.

3. Wiley will campaign in Manhattan on her progressive policies.

Print Ad: 1/10! Where her TV ads had deep inaccuracies, Wiley's new print ad has horrifying design. There's zero color contrast, there are random font changes in the middle of the ad, and the ad uses the most low-quality image of Wiley imaginable.

Yang: 1/10! Continuing with the sense of dishonesty established with her TV advertising, Wiley will be caught making absurd and deeply inaccurate claims about Yang's history in New York, claiming that he's only lived in the city for 7 years(As opposed to the real total of 25), that he wasn't even born in New York State(Which he was), and that he didn't know where NYC was on a map of the United States(Which while there's not directly opposing evidence, has never been verified or claimed by any source).

Manhattan: 1/10! Wiley's progressive talk is cut short by a series of hecklers calling her "de Blasio's pet" and attacking Wiley for her use of "agents of the city" as a designation to mask lobbyist activity in the Mayoral Admin.

Overall: -15. Wiley collapses and makes mistakes in every conceivable way on the trail this turn.

PLP campaigns in Queens x2

PLP drops a hot disstrack on the New York Times, attacking their indecisiveness.

Queens: 11/20. Paperboy has a nice time out in Queens, though nothing of note happens.

Disstrack: 5/10. Paperboy's fans love it, while others view it as petty and silly for a Mayoral candidate. It evens out.

Overall: +1. Nothing of serious importance happens to Paperboy, with only minor momentum gained.

Sliwa will reach out to NYT, because why the hell not

Sliwa attacks Mateo as too conservative to win a general election.

Sliwa talks about crime reduction in the Bronx.

NYTs: 10/10! While he won't be getting their endorsement, the editorial board takes a liking to Sliwa, releasing a full in-depth look into his campaign in a similar fashion to Mateo, and giving him more favorable coverage than before.

Mateo: 7/10. While it's been some time since a Republican was a contender in NYC, the electability argument does hit against Mateo's rabidly conservative candidacy.

Bronx: 4/10. The topic just doesn't seem to land with voters, and Sliwa fails to gather coverage or attention.

Overall: +6. Sliwa has a strong turn with positive New York Times coverage and strength on the trail.

On 8/20/2021 at 7:03 AM, Dobs said:

McGuire doubles down on conservative outreach by canvassing black churches.

He continues by marketing specifically to older black voters.

He finishes the day by railing against defunding the police.

Black Churches: 2/10. While at one church McGuire becomes a little too loose with his language, gathering criticism for his use of swearing while speaking in one of God's churches.

Older Black Voters: 6/10. The McGuire campaign begins making ground, focusing on the public safety message and moderate/conservative ideals which appeal to the demographic.

Defund The Police: 7/10. The attacks on the Defund movement land, as McGuire strengthens his law-and-order and anti-progressive credentials.

Overall: 0. Despite some success on the trail, McGuire's unrestrained language forces him into neutral.

1. Stringer once again moves to focus on the "New Amsterdam" title, holding a rally with Dutch immigrants from the city, and denouncing British imperialism, stating that we should return the city to its original title.

2. Stringer replies under all of Bernie Sanders' posts on twitter asking for an endorsement.

3. Stringer goes to hold a rally in Albany, hoping that anyone from the city in attendance votes for him.

New Amsterdam: 9/10. Somehow this works? Stringer's support among the Dutch community soars, and he makes a strong appeal to progressives by presenting himself as someone willing to propose new and bold ideas to reinvigorate New York.

Bernie Sanders: 10/10! One of Bernie's aides sees the replies, and hooks up a meeting between the two. While Bernie makes it clear that he is already sworn to the Donovan campaign, he will agree to endorse Stringer for #2 on New Yorker's ballots, and will speak favorably of the Comptroller to the press.

Albany: 8/10. This works, as the rally is well-attended and gathers favorable press in showing Stringer's ability to "Work with Albany" once he's Mayor.

Overall: +12. Stringer gathers massive momentum as his campaign sees success after success.

1. Garcia campaigns throughout the Bronx to juice turnout.

2. Garcia releases an ad campaign based on her experience

3. Garcia does a speech in Brooklyn on the city's future.

Bronx: 5/10. Garcia fails to impress voters but does no serious damage to her campaign while touring the borough, breaking even.

Ad: 7/10. The ad's message lands, as Garcia presents herself as an experienced crisis manager who can support the city.

Brooklyn: 10/10! Garcia gives a beautiful, powerful speech on the future of New York, discussing how with this election New Yorkers can choose to back the inexperience, corruption, and politiking of her opponents, or the experience, clean-record, and non-politiking nature of Garcia.

Overall: +7. Garcia gathers steam as she pushes forward her core message and makes waves with a powerful speech in Brooklyn.

Mateo Absence Roll: 10/10! Mateo, despite disappearing from the trail, fails to see any negative effects as his robust campaign operation keeps chugging and his base continues backing him.

Stringer reveals to the media that he legally changed Andrew Yang’s name to Bernie Sanders, just as he will legally change New York’s name to New Amsterdam. He requests that no lawyer actually fact-checks him on this.

2.Eric Adams promises to lower the rent, lower property taxes, get rid of those horrible regulations, etc. He might "move" to New Jersey to make that happen.

3.Eric Adams seeks the endorsement of the Wall Street Journal because the NYT loves Conservatives and because Adams is a selfish Wall Street elitist.

WVP doesn’t have internet access anymore I believe.

Thanks for notifying me on that, and I know Zen has been extremely offline and busy lately(And I've contacted him to see if he's out of the RP just due to the time/internet connection). By tonight or tomorrow night(Depending on how many Dems we can get in) I think we should just be able to move on with the RP. Fewer rolls for me to make and debates for me to run, and if we plan on continuing through the General we can make a game plan once the primaries are done with, depending on the situation.

McGuire will attack DeBlasio in the Bronx.

McGuire will blast the Defund the Police movement.

McGuire will try Dinkins one more time.

McGuire's strategy at the debate will be simple- stop the Socialists. Attack Wiley and Stringer while hammering hard on economic growth and law and order. His strengths are with black and older voters along with some more conservative Jews- he'll keep up the outreach to those groups going strong.

3.Yang will campaign in Queens focusing on UBI

Mondaire Jones: 3/10. Jones will not endorse, not trusting Yang to be ideologically committed to progressive causes as Mayor.

Mark Ruffalo: 7/10. Having politely turned Yang down before(M: With Yang having rolled a 4 his first time), Ruffalo will still not be fully convinced by the Yang operation, though he warms to Andrew.

Queens: 2/10. "How will you pay for it?" "Why shouldn't that money be put towards other programs?" "Will this cause rent to go up?" Yang is bombarded with question after question on his basic income plan while campaigning in Queens, failing to answer most questions sufficiently as he flubs on his top issue.

Overall: -3. Despite gaining ground with Ruffalo, Yang fails on the campaign trail and in attempting to grab Mondaire Jones' endorsement.

3. Stringer rallies in Brooklyn

Edward Norton: 4/10. Norton will not endorse.

New Amsterdam: 4/10. Finally it seems like this idea is running out of steam, as many find the TikTok to be excessive and annoying.

Brooklyn: 7/10. Stringer has a strong time in Brooklyn, speaking confidently to a fairly sized crowd.

Overall: 0. It looks like Stringer's mad momentum is coming to a halt as he falls into neutral this turn.

3. Wiley will go for what always works: Attacking DeBlasio!

Contemplation: 7/10. Maya will release a well-received statement on Twitter apologizing for recent actions and pledging to do better.

AOC: 10/10! Once again AOC proves to be a boon for the Maya campaign! She draws a large and excited crowd of young progressives out!

de Blasio: 10/10! Not only does this distance Maya from her former boss, but it helps bring confidence to progressives across New York that Maya is the candidate for progressive change!

Overall: +12! Maya comeback? Maya makes major gains as she restores faith in her campaign, though the events of last turn still haunt her candidacy.

Barack Obama: 7/10. Barack is entertained, but no.

Rent, Taxes, Regulations: 7/10. The rhetoric is a little conservative in places, but it plays well.

WSJ: 1/10. They will refuse Adams with brutality and quickness.

Overall: -1. Adams fails to make any serious gains this turn as he ends with minor negative momentum.

2. Donovan will discuss his housing plans in Queens

3. Donovan will now seek Gore’s full endorsement

Colbert: 10/10! Stephen will endorse Donovan! A substantive boost in attention towards the Donovan campaign, at the very least.

Queens: 6/10. Finally Donovan seems like he's getting it right on housing, though little attention is brought to the event.

Gore: 7/10. Finally Gore will concede and endorse after a long period of thought, putting the national spotlight on Donovan along with Colbert.

Overall: +8. Donovan gathers serious momentum as nationwide attention is put on his campaign with two major endorsements.

3. Garcia sits down with the NY Post for an interview since the Times hates her.

Stringer: 4/10. The attacks are seen as desperate as Garcia remains in the single digits and Stringer has experienced a recent surge.

Brooklyn: 1/10! Videos will quickly spread on Twitter of countless people in Brooklyn not knowing who Garcia is as she campaigns, with Kathryn coming off as unknown and unimportant to the average New Yorker.

NYPost: 10/10! The Post endorses! A substantive boost for Kathryn among moderate and conservative Democrats and less-engaged voters.

Overall: -1. Kathryn faces challenges on the trail this turn, but makes up for it with a major endorsement from the NYPost.

Defund: 9/10. McGuire continues his war against the Defund movement, continuing to establish himself as tough on crime and a defender of law enforcement.

Dinkins: 2/10. Dinkins will make it very clear that he is not backing McGuire's bid.

Overall: +2. It's not much, but McGuire gathers some momentum for his campaign this turn.

First New York City Mayoral Democratic Debate Results:

The Democratic candidates for NYC Mayor assembled for the first time on the debate stage on June 3rd, facing off against one another with fiery exchanges and passionate appeals to the primary voters of the city. Here are the results:

Eric Adams: +9(8,8,9). Eric Adams walked away from the debate as the most recognized winner of the night, carrying forward a passionate message on public safety, effectively appealing to centrists in New York, and hitting Stringer hard on Adams’ doubts that he could effectively keep New Yorkers safe as Mayor. Adams’ weakest moment was taking an attack from Shaun Donovan over his conservative leanings, though no significant damage was done.

Kathryn Garcia: +8(4,9,10). Kathryn Garcia landed herself a debate performance right on the heels of Adams. Despite a weak appeal to Female voters, Garcia would make up for it in strides with an attack against Stringer for his “shabby morals” and an amazing message of competence which got through to countless New Yorkers looking for a crisis manager in the Mayoral office.

Shaun Donovan: +7(6,10,6). Donovan would also shine on stage as the debate went on. Though he only gave a better-than-average performance discussing his promise to unite New York and landing a small blow against Adams, Shaun would break through with a surprisingly strong appeal to Black and Latino New Yorkers. While these demographics do not make up the majority of the Donovan base, it was a strong moment for the candidate and demonstrates his campaign’s long-focus on attracting Black and Brown voters.

Maya Wiley: -1(1,10,9). Maya Wiley had a mixed performance on stage the whole night through. She would give off a cringe-inducing core message throughout the night, discussing how New York needs “structural change” moving away from the de Blasio Admin, only to continuously and seemingly intentionally point out how she used to “work under de Blasio” and how “de Blasio and I worked closely together”, giving whiplash to the voters of New York. However, she would recover for a time, giving an amazing appeal to progressives on her commitment to the cause and her bold policy items, and landing a serious blow against Stringer as, “out-of-touch”. However, just when it seemed she may be recovering and end with a strong night, Ray McGuire would come at Wiley with a passion, attacking her “socialist” views and challenging her on Defund the Police and other ideas she’s endorsed, hitting hard and truly making the night mixed for Maya.

Ray McGuire: -2(10,3,1). And just like Wiley, McGuire would end the night with a mixed performance, leaning negative for many portions. His best moment on the debate stage would be tearing into Maya Wiley on her left-wing views. However, this breakout moment would be overshadowed by an overly bombastic and aggressive pledge to “Crack down on the criminals of New York.” and a seeming out-of-touch nature with struggling New Yorkers, along with a stilted and extremely obvious attempt to appeal to older Black voters and conservative Jews in the city.

Andrew Yang: -9(2,4,1). Despite being the frontrunner heading into the debate, Yang failed to gather a single attack throughout the night and looked as though he might be able to coast to a strong finish. Of course, if not for his own failings on stage. Yang would seem split between moderate messaging as he called his solutions for New York “realistic” and progressive messaging on improving the lives of New Yorkers as Mayor, would give a weak pander to the left-wingers and left-leaning independents in New York, and would deliver a weak attack on Stringer as, “unelectable”, to which Stringer would hit back with a full listing of his work in public service and his accomplishments in office, harming Yang significantly. Altogether, a poor night.

Scott Stringer: -14(7,1,6). In the end, it wasn’t Stringer’s initial performance which did him in. While he delivered a poorly crafted and quickly rebuked attack against Adams by discussing his, “hidden, secret conservatism” and claiming he was “still a Republican”, Stringer would deliver a strong pitch presenting himself as an experienced progressive, and would give a fair appeal to middle class New Yorkers. However, the end would come from Stringer as the other candidates circled. He would be attacked from every direction all night long, taking a disastrous blow every 15 minutes on stage as the people of New York watched. “A total disaster” was what one staffer would say to the New York Times following the debate.
