Event 1: Javits approaches AIPAC for its endorsement, hoping that the backing of such an organization will make more RNC delegates, and maybe even the President himself, support him for Vice-President. (Influence)

Event 2: Grassroots supporters of Javits spread leaflets in cities, and towns with a high Polish population. The leaflets attack the incumbent Vice-President for his insensitive remarks about the Polish community, such as referring to them as "Polacks" (Influence)

Event 3: Other Grassroots supporters, concentrated in major urban cities in the Northeast, also release leaflets this time attacking Agnew for his multiple gaffes with regards to those on welfare, and to the poor. The banner quote is one of Agnew's "If you've seen one slum, you've seen them all" quote. (Influence)

Influence (8): AIPAC is naturally inclined to support a Republican like Javits, he closes the deal and AIPAC begins to actively maneuever in favor of his nomination.

Influence (4): Javits' moves are seen as pandering by most but still convince a few Poles.

Influence (1!): This final move is seen as a bridge too far by many, with a feud between Agnew and Javits as a bad look for the GOP.

Overall: +2. The AIPAC endorsement is what matters most this week for the Javits camp.

Event 1: Pete McCloskey hires private investigators to look into Nixon’s activities. That crook is up to no good, and McCloskey is sure his guys will prove it.

Event 2: Pete McCloskey gives a national speech condemning the Nixon administration for recent failures in Cambodia. McCloskey calls on Nixon to leave Cambodia before any more Americans are sent to die.

Event 3: Pete McCloskey praises efforts by Jacob Javits to become Vice President, and publicly endorses him. McCloskey even promises to make Javits his Vice President when Nixon loses the primaries.

Investigators (5): The attempt is quickly brought up to the media when McCloskey can scarcely find investigators discreet enough to keep the news from the media. The President has yet to be under hot water for a hint of impropriety, McCloskey just looks like he is reaching for straws. (Handicapped roll)

Rally (7): The speech is effective but leaves many wondering why McCloskey is running as a Republican, his small progressive cohort still eats it up.

VP Announcement (6-2=4): McCloskey's VP antics are widely covered, getting his name out there. Javits' clear refusal to endorse does damper the mood but not catastrophically.

Overall: +1 among progressives. McCloskey's campaign avoids any tragedies this weak, a sign of good luck. But the messaging is so off base with the feel of the GOP that his appeal is kept to only the most progressive.

Event 1: Florida (Rally)

Senator Stuart Symington hopes to refurbish his credentials as he gets further away from home and shake those nerves! Symington hits the road in Florida, focusing on some areas near the Everglades in southern Florida, where he touts his support of numerous bills that other moderate Democrats have championed about protecting land. He gives a speech in front of a swamp that he says has been protected federally for years. He says that he hopes to enlarge the areas protected in nature across the country, and Florida has been a light in the dark on the issue.

Event 2: Georgia (Rally)

Symington hopes to start an active campaign schedule that will make him look better and get his name familiarity up across the country. He jaunts over the Florida-Georgia line and speaks at an event in Macon, GA, where he visits with local leader Jimmy Carter. The two talk about future aspirations, and Symington asks for an endorsement from him, where hopefully they can go and attend a joint crowd in Augusta later that day.

Event 3: Michigan (influence)

Symington ends the day with prominent Michigan Democrats, particularly former Sen. Hart, whom he hopes will help him sway Michigander delegates over to his side. They crack jokes and host a dinner party in Ann Arbor, where Sen. Symington hopes to attract the delegates to his side and get a prominent state behind him.

Rally (9): Symington finds a sweet spot in Florida where his message of environmental conservation hits right on the head!

Rally (9): Despite having lost the primary in 1970, Jimmy Carter is still regarded as an effective speaker and campaigner for the Democratic cause. He brings energy to the Symington campaign, jolting it back to life in Georgia.

Influence (8): Hart has always been among the most liberal of the moderate faction, a natural fit for Humphrey. However, after seeing the effective campaigning of Symington in the South, he is willing to jump on board the Missouri Senator's campaign.

Overall: +11. Symington rocks this week! After a disastrous start to his campaign, the Missouri Senator proves to the field he is not down and out yet. He has a long way to go but the momentum is in his corner.

Event 1: President Nixon ramps up secret bombings in Cambodia. Hoping to knock a dent in Khmer Rouge forces.

Event 2:  President Nixon would coordinate with treasury Secretary Nelson Rockefeller and will begin coordinating efforts with Federal Reserve Chair Arthur F. Burns to increase the money supply. In order to begin what's going to be an increase in consumer spending. @Zenobiyl

Event 3: President Nixon coordinates with allies in the House and outlines his economic recovery plan for 1972.

1972 Economic Plan

- An increased tariff on all imported goods. From 10% to 15%.

- Establishment of a Cost-of-Living Council to monitor the cost of living in every state. Coordinated with Secretary of Local Affairs; Phyllis Schlafly.

- Corporate tax cuts. (From 10% to 8%)

- High-Income and Middle-Income tax cuts.

- Low Income Veterans, (below the poverty line) will be eliminated from the tax rolls. Similar to President Nixon's economic plan in 1969.

Speaker Ford introduces the bill into the house.

Khmer Bombings (4): The bombings are only slightly effective and while they give the Vietnamese precious time to recover by halting the advance of the Rouge, it won't be long before they are back on their way.

Increase Money Supply (7): Nixon's move ruffles the feathers of some of the conservative members of his party but endears the Rockefeller folks and consumer confidence sees an uptick along with money supply.

Economic Recovery Plan (4): The Bill is not a massive success nor a major PR moment for the administration, the economic impact will be muddled, say most economists.

Senator Hubert Humphrey will begin his campaign in earnest the right way - by strategizing what is worth contesting and what is not. The trend from the beginning of the primary days has not been national campaigns, no, in fact it has been a tale of favorite sons and putting forth resources in states that actually matter. For that purpose, Hubert Humphrey will not be contesting the Georgia or Florida primaries. (Consider this Influence - Party Bosses)

Of course, his campaign will need personal visits from the Hubester himself. Hubert Humphrey will also take some time this turn to shore up his base of support in New Hampshire, banking on a strong victory to propel his momentum going forward. (Rally - NH)

And finally, Hubert Humphrey will meet with prominent civil rights activists to attempt to gain their endorsement ahead of a long and seemingly brutal primary. (Influence - Blacks)

Influence (10!): The Party Bosses, once again, are coming to love Hubert H. Humphrey. Not too liberal but certainly moreso than Symington and Wallace, his decision to pull out of the first Southern primaries please Northern bosses to no end and earn him lots of brownie points up North.

Rally (2): Humphrey's personal affect just doesn't translate during his appearance in New Hampshire.

Influence (6): With Clay in the mix, Humphrey's got a hard row to hoe, but his involvement in civil rights legislation will be crucial if it he is to make successful inroads. He manages to pick off a few mid-tier leaders.

Overall: +4. Humphrey's massive machine infrastructure will likely prove to be his greatest boon this campaign.

On 4/12/2021 at 9:03 PM, The Blood said:

1. Wallace will enter the primary race with fire and fury, touring New Hampshire as he attacks Hubert Humphrey for his decision to not contest the Georgia and Florida primaries, declaring, "First it was figures like Humphrey who stood by while conservative leaders like myself battled to give the average Democrat the say in our nominating process. Now, Humphrey is blatantly ignoring the wishes of Democrats in two entire states in the name of political gain and maneuvering. New Hampshire, we need a Democratic nominee who actually gives a damn about the wishes of Democrats in all states, not a nominee who will skip over states they know they're going to lose." (Rally)

2. Next, Wallace will tour the state of Florida, making it clear his commitment to law and order, clearing America's streets of drugs, and defending the American way of life. (Rally)

3. Finally, Wallace will begin his work influencing union workers in the Rust Belt. Wallace is fighting for the working man of America, and for his communities, families, and beliefs. The Rust Belt and the discontent working class whites found in it should provide a wealth of support for Wallace. (Influence - Union Workers)

Poll Request:

Nationwide Democratic Primary Race Among Blue-Collar Union Workers.

Rally (4): It's to be expected that New Hampshire doesn't immediately gravitate to Wallace. It's not a total fire but it's certainly not the breakthrough needed to give Wallace an unlikely win in the Granite State.

Rally (6): Wallace does well hitting his bread and butter issues in Florida, where he is the frontrunner, unfortunately, he is outshone this week by Symington's environmental campaigning there.

Influence (7): Wallace has spent the last several years boning up on his appeal to working class whites in both the North and South. His opening appeal for this campaign is successful. While not electric, it's a strong first step.

Overall: +2. Wallace has an okay week that is largely overshadowed by the brewing Symington comeback. Still, he trends positively.

14 hours ago, Fbarbarossa said:

Clay kicks off his campaign with a rally in St Louis

Clay attempts to gain the endorsement of the NAACP

Clay attempts to influence non conservative Southern voters to his cause.

Rally (1!): Unfortunately, Clay's rally is bogged down by protesters from the surrounding suburban and rural areas outside St. Louis. As Ed Brooke learned last cycle, many Americans, especially in Missouri, are not ready for a black President yet.

Influence (9): The NAACP will enthusastically lend its support to Clay in his crusade.

Influence (6): This does not go terribly. While Clay's influence is largely restricted to black voters in the South, mainstream Southern Democrats have to admit the man is a decent politician.

Overall: 0. Clay's week is balanced out overall between the great news from the NAACP and the embarassingly crashed St. Louis rally.

1. Texas Influence (Favorite Son attempt)

Senator Stuart Symington makes the trip down to the Lone Star state to visit with former President Lyndon Johnson. After being shut out in the 1968 primaries, Symington hopes he can convince the former president to run as a "Favorite Son" on Symington's behalf in the state of Texas. He talks about Wallace's threats, as well as President Nixon's, to Johnson's legacy on the Great Society, and that Symington plans to back it as he continues campaigning.

[Will attempt for endorsement if Favorite Son request fails]

2. Florida - Rally

Following the successful rally down in the Everglades, Symington is buoyed by a good week of campaigning. He goes north and rallies near Tampa, where he talks at length about protecting the sea life near Tampa and in the Gulf of Mexico. He praises the state for its leadership on the environment, and hopes to make it a winning issue in the state.

3. Influence - Conservatives

Symington sits down with prominent conservative politicians to begin to game out how he can gain more with them, hoping to present a challenge to Wallace in the south. He talks about their concerns and hopes for a potential presidency and what Symington could offer.

3. Wallace will meet with one George Smathers, discussing with the Senator and Florida folk hero the possibility of him serving as a favorite son in his home state for Wallace. If a role as a favorite son is not found, a plain endorsement will also be discussed. (Influence)

Event 1: McCloskey tries to get the endorsement of George McGovern, by promising to make him running mate for a bipartisan progressive choice for America.

Event 2: McCloskey responds to the passage of the Cannabis Sentencing Act by smoking a joint live on television. The joint is specially designed to look exactly like a cigarette, in an attempt to point out the hypocrisy of social conservatives who oppose weed but are ok with cigarettes.

Event 3: McCloskey makes a public speech pledging to end the draft. McCloskey calls on Nixon to join the pledge, and stop sending young Americans to fight in Cambodia or elsewhere. McCloskey emphasizes that abolishing the draft wouldn’t weaken the military but strengthen it, because the soldiers would be willing volunteers instead of teens conscripted against their consent.

Liberal Democratic Primary Events

Former Vice President Humphrey will take the stage in Concord, New Hampshire to speak on the need to continue the work of his former boss President Johnson on the Great Society. He will also speak out on the need to reject the candidacy of Senator Wallace, who has yet to disavow his segregationist statements in the past and who will virtually guarantee a loss to Nixon in November. (Rally - New Hampshire)

Next, Hubert Humphrey will request meetings with the presidents of some of the largest labor unions across the Midwest such as the United Steelworkers and Teamsters Union. He wants to have the chance to speak to them one on one to not only hear about their concerns, but personally promise that he will work to address them if he has their vote and wins the primary.  (Influence - Labor Unions)

Senator Humphrey will end the week by sending out campaign literature to Democratic primary voters who have been identified by their income bracket as belonging to a member of the working class, for those who have responded to surveys for the party. The literature will be a small leaflet of Humphrey's achievements, including his lead role in passing the Civil Rights Act, food stamps, and his vocal support of the Vietnam War. (Influence - Working Class)

1. Nixon plays golf with some "New Right" donors in New Hampshire. Emphasizing his victory in Vietnam, passage of the New Federalism Act. Along with the slightly late confirmation of Phyllis Schlafly. 😛 (Influence-New Right)

2. Nixon and his White House pals would laugh at McCloskey's television fiasco. Nixon continues to ignore McCloskey, and not respond. With that said, he and Vice President Agnew go meet with some Progressive Republicans for the week. Talking to them about how supporting a guy like McCloskey is a joke, and a bad face for their movement. (Influence-Progressive Republicans)

3. President Nixon coordinates with UN Ambassador George Herbert Walker Bush in continuing efforts to formulate a UN response to China. Inviting China to come to the table once more. Henry Kissinger heads over to the Soviet Union and claims that their Chinese pals are getting too out of control. Who knows what they'll try? China could try and take over what's left of North Vietnam for all we know. 😉 Kissinger hopes to manipulate Brezhnev and his people to have a talk with China and keep them in line.

Favorite Son (10!): Against all odds, President Johnson will agree to put his name on the ballot in order to control the Texas delegation. He remains hesitant about crossing his former Vice President but will accept Symington's place on the ballot.

Rally (10!): Another extremely successful day in Florida as Symington builds Momentum in the Sunshine State.

Influence (6): Symington is having a serious comeback moment so the conservative leaders are forced to listen and they like some of what they hear.

Overall: +13. Symington continues on his most incredible trajectory towards a recovery after his disastrous beginning. He continues to make massive gains.

Endorsement (5): King will endorse Wallace but it won't move the needle as after King's most recenty gubernatorial loss he has seen has influence widely sapped.

Influence (9): These are Wallace's bread and butter voters and he is doing a strong job of consolidating Southern support, something that can't go wrong if he has a prayer of the nomination.

Endorsement (8): As Senate Minority Leader, Smathers is unlikely to ruffle feathers by attaching himself to any Presidential Candidate as a favorite son. However, Wallace is clearly his preferred candidate and will agree to give his endorsement. His endorsement goes over exceedingly well and is a much needed breather in Florida for the Wallace campaign, feeling the constriction of the ascendent Symington camp.

Overall: +7. Wallace's fortunes brighten as his campaign trends in a positive direction.

Endorsement (10!): While McGovern says nothing about the VP offer, he endorses McCloskey as "the most progressive candidate running; Democrat or Republican. Full Stop." With a defunct Progressive Party for which he was the nominee in 1968, McGovern's announcement is sure to bring a flood of disaffected Progressives and Progressive Democrats into the Republican Primary to back McCloskey's quixotic challenge.

Ad? (7): This is a federal crime. Fortunately for McCloskey, no TV network will air it and the man escapes jailtime due to his status as a Congressman.

Rally (6): The speech goes over relatively well.

Overall: +6. The McGovern announcement shakes the political world to its core and definitely reshapes some fault lines, albeit entirely in progressive circles. However, committing a crime only further alienates him from the mainstream and has essentially killed any progress possible among everyone to the right of Progressives.

Gov. Frank Church announces support and endorsement for Hubert Humphrey! @Cal

Rally (3): Humphrey's attack on Wallace is considered weak and his personal affect still is simply not landing.

Influence (10!): Humphrey has an excellent meeting with the Labor Unions and is able to persuade some leaders away from Wallacite rhetoric.

Influence (3): Humphrey's literature is seemingly out of step with the working class. Many of the voters who receive the pamphlet view Humphrey as focusing on issues to help voters of color before white families.

Endorsement (7): The Church endorsement goes over well and aides Humphrey with the Idaho delegation.

Overall: +2. Triple H's otherwise underwhelming week is cancelled out by the excellent turnout and results of his meeting with Labor Unions.

Influence (7): The donors are quick to open their checkbooks to help keep the Granite State red.

Influence (5): Suprisingly, this is not as effective this week considering McCloskey's ability to attract McGovern's endorsement. Progressives are simply in awe, no matter how much a trainwreck it is otherwise.

Kissinger (6): This is effective, somewhat. Brezhnev does not fall for the ploy but has been extremely antsy about the situation in North Vietnam anyway. At the Sino-American ripple he requests a meeting with Beijing to discuss their own split and the situation in North Vietnam among other geopolitical issues.

Overall: +3. A decent week for the President.

Schmooze (3): Javits must be a bit rusty because the NYGOP, an organization a tad to his right, responds lukewarmly.

Influence (3): Unfortunately, as kindred as the two progressives are, Mathias makes a judgment call to avoid embarassing his fellow Marylander.

Rally (8): Ironically, the least important move is the most successful. Javits must have taken the weekly frustration and let it out to the crowd for a strong performance.

Overall: -1. Javits backslides ever so slightly.

Clay rallies in Arkansas

Rally (10!): Clay does an excellent job consolidating some of the liberal and progressive support that exists in the Florida primary. He becomes a candidate representative of Black Floridian Democrats not wanting to give the dominant Sikes-Smathers wing, a powerfully Pro-Wallace camp, any more power.

Influence (9): Clay is always welcome in the circles of black voters as a champion for their issues.

Rally (4): The higher density white population of Arkansas doesn't quite click for Clay, though it's not disastrous as it could have been.

Overall: +9. Clay has an incredibly strong week focused on support from black voters, largely in the South who remain Democrats but struggle with their affiliation.

New Hampshire Primary Results - March 7th, 1972

Democratic Primary

91,825 votes - 20 Delegates

Hubert Humphrey - 29,384 votes (32.0%) 6 delegates

Stuart Symington - 28,190 votes (30.7%) 6 delegates

George Wallace - 22,965 votes (24.9%) 5 delegates

Bill Clay - 11,386 votes (12.4%) 3 delegates

In a race that really should have been as close as it was, Hubert Humphrey saw deflated turnout (2) limp across the finish line in urban areas as academia really began to turn out for the Clay campaign which had a surprisingly solid finish (9). Stuart Symington launched one of the great comback stories nearly dethroning Humphrey but coming up just short, still landing a solid performance on the backs of moderate rural and suburban voters (5). Finally, George Wallace finished a respectable third with an impressive 25% in a Northern state built on the hodgepodge of Hawkish voters who support politicians like Former Governor King and Senator McIntyre (8).

---

Republican Primary

85,214 votes

Richard Nixon - 80,272 (94.2%)

Pete McCloskey - 3,664 votes (4.3%) No Delegates

Others (Write-Ins) - 1,278 votes (1.5%)

Nixon rolls to victory. One exit polls suggests that upwards of 70% of all McCloskey voters are actually disaffected Democrats who crossed party lines to support the recommendation of McGovern. Most of those voters share their 2nd choice for President would be Bill Clay.

Up Next: Final Campaign Turn before Florida Primary

Alright folks, sorry for the wait due to the retreat and my subsequent tiredness but I think we can probably tackle Florida over the course of tomorrow being Sunday so let's hit it with zeal! Thanks for the great content and I look forward to getting back on track! May the dice be ever in your flava and happy flavamaking!

1. Stuart Symington rallies in Orlando Florida

Symington visits another area of the southern part of the state, making a campaign effort to flip the state over to his side and continue the large amounts of momentum he is garnering in the state. He dings Wallace over opposition to broadly popular bills that he's opposed in the Senate.

2. Symington visits Chicago

Symington makes his first trip up north in a visit to Chicago, Illinois, where he touts his midwestern folksy appeal in the state. He attempts to gain the endorsement of Adlai Stevenson II.

3. Symington finishes his Florida tour

Symington wraps up his Florida tour in Tallahassee, where he rallies outside the state Capitol with supporters. He calls for decency and a return to the values of America, of "freedom, kindness and warmth". He goes with some voters to the polls and chats across the street with some undecided voters before going to his hotel to prepare for returns.

1 hour ago, Sean F Kennedy said:

Fred Harris announces endorsement of Stuart Symington @Hestia

“ My friends, right now is an important time for the Democratic Party because we need to tell America what it is exactly we stand for, are we going to be the party of division and chaos? Or are we going to stand up for the working class, of all races and creeds. There are those within the party that seek to divide us, those like George Wallace who plays this working class hero facade, my message to the union workers of America as he does not represent you and will not fight for you. We here and the Democratic Party are now more diverse than ever, We need a man who will unite our party and I believe that person is Stuart Symington!”

Javits asks for Edward Brooke's endorsement in his attempt to be Vice President (Influence)

Javits holds a rally in Queens, hoping that a good turnout of Jews, Liberals, and Progressives will show that Javits is a popular politician, and the RNC would be wise to make him VP. As for what he talks about, he focuses on protecting Human Rights abroad, and the need for America to vigorously support Israel (Rally)

Javits schmoozes with Massachusetts GOP big-wigs, in an attempt to get their support at the RNC. (Schmooze)

2. Wallace will tour the northern areas of Florida, hitting Symington again and again for his "Reckless" support for bills which would increase the power of the Federal government and strip away at the rights of states. (Rally)

3. Wallace will seek the endorsement of Bob Sikes in the leadup to the FL Primary, appealing to him with a strong message of law and order, fiscal responsibility, and defending the American family. (Influence)
