Spiro Agnew

Someone more Liberal

Someone more Conservative

1. Influence Progressives

Pete McCloskey seeks the endorsement and support of the NAACP for the Republican primaries by bringing up the subtle racism of Nixon and Spiro Agnew. McCloskey pledges support for civil rights laws and affirmative action programs.

2. Influence Progressives

Pete McCloskey holds more anti-war protests in university campuses and big cities. McCloskey also gathers prominent anti Vietnam activists to join in his crusade against the war in Cambodia.

3. Influence Progressives

Pete McCloskey sets up a hotline for drafted soldiers to report any wrongdoing to his offices, promising to spread the truth  about what is going on in the war. McCloskey advertises the hotline heavily with pamphlets to young american soldiers, and gets in touch with local news about running any stories he gets. My Lai can’t be the only war crime going on in Nixon’s little war, and McCloskey will soon have the evidence to prove it.

Poll Request: Progressive Influence of all candidates.

Fred Harris announces endorsement of Stuart Symington @Hestia

On 4/18/2021 at 10:42 AM, Hestia said:

1. Stuart Symington rallies in Orlando Florida

Symington visits another area of the southern part of the state, making a campaign effort to flip the state over to his side and continue the large amounts of momentum he is garnering in the state. He dings Wallace over opposition to broadly popular bills that he's opposed in the Senate.

2. Symington visits Chicago

Symington makes his first trip up north in a visit to Chicago, Illinois, where he touts his midwestern folksy appeal in the state. He attempts to gain the endorsement of Adlai Stevenson II.

3. Symington finishes his Florida tour

Symington wraps up his Florida tour in Tallahassee, where he rallies outside the state Capitol with supporters. He calls for decency and a return to the values of America, of "freedom, kindness and warmth". He goes with some voters to the polls and chats across the street with some undecided voters before going to his hotel to prepare for returns.

Endorsement (5): The Harris endorsement is mildly effective. It helps moderately with both liberals and Southerners but effects neither too greatly as Harris largely straddles the appeal line.

Rally (7): Another day another solid rally as many of the more urban voters in Orlando respond to attacks on Wallace well.

Rally (7): Symington is back in his element in the Midwest in a state that could be crucial for overtaking Humphrey as Wallace's biggest threat: Illinois. He does well.

Rally (1!): Disaster strikes! Symington appears to have, like Icarus, gone too far north and flown too close to the sun. Tallahassee remains Wallace country and Northern Florida swamps Symington with Pro-Wallace attendees who break out in jeers when Symington calls for kindness and warmth; viewing it as coded dovish rhetoric. Symington is forced to cut the rally short.

Overall: -1. For the first time in the campaign, the most important story around Symington is his jettisoned Tallahassee rally and his flee to Illinois.

Javits asks for Edward Brooke's endorsement in his attempt to be Vice President (Influence)

Javits holds a rally in Queens, hoping that a good turnout of Jews, Liberals, and Progressives will show that Javits is a popular politician, and the RNC would be wise to make him VP. As for what he talks about, he focuses on protecting Human Rights abroad, and the need for America to vigorously support Israel (Rally)

Javits schmoozes with Massachusetts GOP big-wigs, in an attempt to get their support at the RNC. (Schmooze)

Endorsement (7): Javits easily secures the endorsement of his longtime friend and the move is seen as a step in the right direction for consolidating party support, particularly among the MA delegtion.

Rally (7): Javits has a certain quality that, while an older statesman, allows him to connect well with working class people, especially the Jewish community. It aides him.

Schmooze (8): With Brooke having endorsed, it's good feels for Javits among the MAGOP.

Overall: +7. Javits breaks out of his trend of mediocre turns with some positive direction.

1. Wallace will tour Florida, hitting home his message on law and order and defending basic American ideals. (Rally)

2. Wallace will tour the northern areas of Florida, hitting Symington again and again for his "Reckless" support for bills which would increase the power of the Federal government and strip away at the rights of states. (Rally)

3. Wallace will seek the endorsement of Bob Sikes in the leadup to the FL Primary, appealing to him with a strong message of law and order, fiscal responsibility, and defending the American family. (Influence)

Poll Request:

Wisconsin Primary

Rally (7): This rally speaks to the strength of Wallace's campaign and is a good bread and butter moment for him.

Rally (1!): There is nothing wrong with the rally itself, but something feels.. off. It's not long before the campaign staff tells Wallace it's time to cut the rally short. As he leaves the stage, men in white hoods can be seen entering the venue. While it's said the klansmen were angry at the candidate for moving away from his segregationist rhetoric, their appearance leaves a sour taste in the mouths of many.

Influence (7): Sikes will enthusiastically endorse Wallace, and his support will be crucial in locking down major turnout in Northern Florida.

Overall: -1. Like Symington, Wallace has a rally go south. However, this is mostly mitigated by the support of the Governor, a former popular Congressman for Northern Florida.

1. President Nixon hits the trail for a few hours in California. Swinging through Yorba Lindsay and L.A.

2. President Nixon authorizes the CIA to execute a rescue mission for the captured agents in Cambodia.

3. President Nixon authorizes more secret bombings of Khmer Rouge supply lines.

Rally (10!): Despite forgetting how to spell his hometown's name, they don't care and are just happy to see their favorite son.

Rescue (6): The mission succeeds but one of the CIA operatives is shot and killed on the escape out. The mission is largely only possible due to the increased bombings which have weakened the Khmer position and forced more men to the frontlines.

Bombings (10!): The returned bombings are super effective! Khmer lines are beginning to faulter again and the Rouge is finally on the losing end of the back and forth for territory.

Poll Request: Progressive Influence of all candidates.

Influence (6): The NAACP has already made its endorsement. However, a few individual leaders will recommend the Congressman for any Republicans concerned about civil rights.

Influence (3): Due to McCloskey's lack of popularity and persona, the protests are not widely attended.

Influence (5): This is yet another federal crime. However, McCloskey does not get off easy this time. McCloskey is reported by several of the more patriotic soldiers and indicted on 2 counts of conspiracy to commit espionage. When his office is raided, the federal agents also find several grams of marijuana and he is indicted on 1 count of possession (38/100). He will stand trial in federal court soon.

Overall: Arrested and indicted. So not great.

Humphrey influences the working class that is important in the United States.

Influence (3): Humphrey continues to struggle to relate to the unions, which seemingly continue to gravitate towards the racialized politics of Wallace.

Influence (2): Even here Humphrey struggles, perhaps depresed from his failure with the working class, the Senator is off his game.

Influence (1!): And once again, Humphrey fails to connect and giving a pat phrase about the working class being "important" just isn't enough to tap into their hopes or, as Wallace does, their anxieties.

Overall: -10. Brutal turn for Humphrey as his campaign seems to slow even after a win in New Hampshire.

Overall: +8. An excellent showing for Clay as his campaign continues to pick up momentum.

1972 Florida Presidential Primary - March 14th, 1972

Democratic Primary

1,305,958 votes -- 81 Delegates

George Wallace - 518,465 votes (39.7%) 49 delegates

Stuart Symington - 447,944 votes (34.3%) 27 delegates

Bill Clay - 269,027 votes (20.6%) 5 delegates

Hubert Humphrey - 70,522 votes (5.4%)

Bill Clay was the surprise of the evening with an impressive 20.6% after an incredible drive to get black voters to the poll (9). Only time will tell if this will keep up or if his continual inability to break into 2nd or 1st will only lesson turnout as time goes on. Even with "strong" performances, candidates will need to win. He walks away with 5 delegates. Senator Hubert Humphrey did not contest the primary but still mustered up enough support on name alone to carry 5% of its voters (7). Then comes the race between the two major southern candidates. Sen. Stuart Symington capitalized on his moderate appeal and brought out solid moderate tunout (6). The biggest disappointment then, was George Wallace's inability to capitalize on his broad support in Northern Florida, which saw depressed turnout numbers from what was expected by the Wallace camp (1!). A win remains a win, but if anything, this primary proves that Stuart Symington certainly has life and George Wallace remains a tenuous frontrunner in a divided party. Thanks to the delegate allocation laws of Florida, Wallace still walks away a clear delegate leader.

---

Republican Primary

395,042 votes

Richard Nixon - 393,462 votes (99.6%)

Pete McCloskey - 1,580 votes (0.4%)

Pete McCloskey is in jail. Florida voters did not like this.

Pete McCloskey pleads not guilty to all charges, and withdraws from the primaries. His final message is an endorsement of Javits for Vice President, and a write-in campaign for Edward Brooke. Game over.

[I’m going to hopefully pick up the pieces of the Progressives, but otherwise let me know any open spots where I can play. This time I will be extra careful not to commit any crimes.]

Hubert Humphrey will again send out one of his infamous brochures to working class Democrats, touting his support of social security and welfare expansion that has assisted many working class families. (Influence - Working Class)

Next, the former VP will hold a rally in Chicago. There, he will speak on the necessity to keep the moderate, liberal, progressive wings of the party represented in a time where George Wallace seems deadset on pushing them out and making the Democratic Party a vessel for only his own policy concerns. (Rally - Illinois)

Finally, Humphrey will sit down with former Senator Gaylord Nelson in an attempt to have him run as a favorite son in the state of Wisconsin or at the very least earn his endorsement. (Unsure? Maybe influence Liberals?)

1. Rally Illinois

Symington rallies in Springfield, where he delivers a speech on the lessons gained by the presidency of Abraham Lincoln and the kinds of change that need to happen to see his vision truly delivered in the United States.

2. Influence - North Carolina

Symington will approach Gov. Scott to run as a favorite son on Symington's behalf in the state of North Carolina, or if he does not wish to, endorse Symington to get a boost in that state.

3. Rally (kinda) Texas

The Symington campaign will deliver pamphlets throughout major cities in Texas, with LBJ's face on them, with the slogan, "Trust him, Trust America" to try and bolster the Favorite Son candidacy in that state.

Poll Request:

North Carolina Dem Primary (with Symington or Scott depending on how #2 goes)

(37/100): McCloskey's defense is effective enough so that he is found Not Guilty of one of the charges of Conspiracy to Commit Espionage. He is found Guilty of the other count and also of the Marijuana Possession charge. He receives a sentence of 12 years and is set for release on March 20th, 1984.

Influence (9): Humphrey has an able day connecting to the working class: a major breakthrough.

Rally (9): Chicago, a midwestern city, responds well to Humphrey! The rally is electric and will help boost his turnout in Chicago.

Favorite Son (5): Nelson will stay out of the actual primary but will throw his endorsement to HHH, which gives him a minor boost.

Overall: +8. Humphrey rebounds from his horrid week last week with strength in Illinois.

North Carolina Dem Primary (with Symington or Scott depending on how #2 goes)

Rally (2): Symington's focus on Lincoln is seen as novel and strange in contrast to Humphrey's electric Chicago rally on important issues.

Influence (3): Scott, following his embarassing loss over the primary, has elected to retire from politics. He will not run and announces his neutrality between Symington and Wallace in the primary.

Rally (4): LBJ is popular but his face is gaunt, the magic just isn't the same. Still, he is more viable than Symington.

Overall: -6. Symington struggles for the first real time since his campaign launch.

Rally (8): The rally goes over swimmingly in Georgia, it's Wallace country.

Rally (10!): The white working class that carried Wallace to victory in the primary in 1968 is out in full force! Wallace looks like a real force to once again contend Wisconsin.

Rally (1!): After his massive rally in Racine, Madison liberals are said to have beset his next rally with large scale protests, projecting a major schism among Wisconsin Democrats.

Overall: +3. Aside from a bipolar week in Wisconsin, Wallace breaks positive due to his warm reception in Georgia.

Rally (9): Atlanta is fertile soil for Clay, a city gripped between white and black racial tensions. Clay will drive out the black vote.

Rally (6): The rally is successful but not electric.

Rally (5): Clay, surprisingly, does not attract major jeers. It's as successful as one could expect but doesn't move the needle much. Alabama is staunch Wallace country nevertheless.

Overall: +5. A decent week for Clay, who continues to hang on.

Javits Turn

Schmooze (1!): Javits drops bagel and lox all over the Chair of the NYGOP. Oops.

Endorsement (5): Case will endorse, but it's not as fiery as one might expect.

Rally (6): The rally is a decent concept and has solid turnout, nothing groundbreaking.

Overall: -4. The faux pas with his own state party dominates Javits' week.

Bernie Sanders and Bella Abzug oppose the censure. This is because McCloskey is already resigned and it is questionably constitutional to censure someone who isn’t in congress anymore.
