Javits goes to a meeting of the Alabama GOP. What's the worst that could happen, a Progressive Jew going to one of the most Conservative states in America? (Schmooze)

Javits ends the week by giving a speech in Brooklyn about fighting corruption, and graft in politics. He relates his personal experience with the Tammy Hall Machine, his own father being a ward heeler for them, and this experience inspired him to fight corruption for his entire life. (Rally)

Rally (6): The rally goes well with Symington attracting a crowd.

Rally (5): Again, a decent rally.

Rally (8): The attack seems to land as Wallace has certainly not been personally present in Texas since the midterm.

Overall. +4. A decent week for Symington.

Rally (3): Wallace's rally lacks energy and seemingly lands with a thud.

Influence (4): The relatively infirmed Governor Baring will endorse Wallace as a matter of course but it doesn't do much to move the needle.

Rally (4): Texans actually find themselves agreeing with Symington's attack, Wallace's response is only partially effective.

Overall: -5. Wallace backslides, somewhat blunting his overall momentum advantage.

Influence (1!): Javits is hated by his own people. Consistently so. He calls it church.

Schmooze (9): Apparently, the worst is a lot better than when a progressive jew meets up with other jews.

Rally (9): The Rally lands in Brooklyn.

Overall: +3. Javits has a national embarassment over his awkward synagogue visit. But on the ground he makes up for it.

Influence (6): The bosses largely agree.

Rally (7): Humphrey is a longshot in Nevada but this will certainly help him.

Influence (5): The speech is received warmly but is not revolutionary.

Overall: +3. A decent week for Triple H.

Nevada Democratic Primary - April 11th, 1972

89,427 votes -- 11 Delegates

George Wallace - 37,023 votes (41.4%) 11 Delegates

Stuart Symington - 30,316 votes (33.9%)

Hubert Humphrey - 22,088 votes (24.7%)

The Nevada primary broke turnout records. With nearly 90,000 Nevadans casting a ballot, it was the most well-attended partisan primary in the Silver State's history. This is likely due to the central importance of the race as the final primary of the early season, the last before the meat of the season begins later this month. It is also due to the strong campaigns of each candidate leading into tonight. Underdog Hubert Humphrey saw massive mobilization on the part of more liberal voters in urban Las Vegas that turned his forces into something to be reckoned with, surging in the last moments of the evening (10!). Stuart Symington's campaign would effectively mobilize suburban moderates in Washoe and Clark countires, placing him a respectable second (6). But it would be the mobilization of the rural conservatives in the "Cow Counties" along with conservative elements in suburban centers that would deliver Walter Baring's state for George Wallace (8). As a winner take all state, Nevada comes with all 11 delegates. But more importantly, the "First in the West" primary delivers crucial momentum for the Wallace campaign moving deeper into the season and becomes his fifth straight win since Georgia.

Senator Stuart Symington suspends Presidential Campaign; Endorses Hubert Humphrey for President

Sen. Symington delivers his endorsement of Vice President Humphrey in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He declares that if the nation is to heal in the future, they will have to unite behind the best person possible of uniting the country: Vice President Humphrey. He declares that all of his supporters should go behind the Vice President for the nomination, and decries the candidacy of George Wallace. He says he is happy to have received all the support from all swaths of the country, including above 30% results in places as different as New Hampshire and North Carolina. He says he looks forward to representing Missouri in the Senate.

Johnsons continue campaign in Texas

Despite the dropping out of Sen. Symington, President Johnson will continue his favorite son campaign in Texas, largely led by former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson. Several former Symington backers pressure the Humphrey campaign to withdraw from Texas to allow Johnson to have a one on one clash with Wallace in the state. Lady Bird even is planning to headline an event for Johnson in Austin in the coming weeks.

Fred Harris endorses Hubert Humphrey

After hearing of his friend’s decision to drop out Senator Harris announced his support for the former Vice President. “This is a moment we need to show the American people what we stand for as Democrats, we denounce this rise of right wing nationalist and populist tendencies that we’ve seen by the Wallace campaign, if we Democrats nominate George Wallace, then Hell we deserve to lose. To take on a popular President we need a nominee who exhibits the best of our nation and Hubert Humphrey does that, that is why I’m proud to support my good friend Hubert Humphrey.”

Inmate 40432 (AKA Pete McCloskey) Endorses Hubert Humphrey!

Pete McCloskey gives a rare announcement from prison, declaring his support for Hubert Humphrey for president. McCloskey calls Humphrey the “most progressive candidate running, without question” and calls on progressives, liberals, and moderates to cast out racist Nixon and racist Wallace to elect a fighter for unions, peace, and (hopefully) legal weed.

Hubert Humphrey will take a moment this week to thank the party for coalescing around him. With Wallace becoming the existential threat to the continued existence of the Democratic Party, many know that cooperating with Wallace means a century or more of Republicans taking the White House. Humphrey will meet with Symington, Clay, Harris, Kennedy, Gallagher, and other big names in the Democratic Party who have endorsed him to ensure that he is representing the spirit of the Democratic Party moving forward. As an ode to his old boss, Humphrey announces he is not contesting the Texas primary, as it would be disrespectful of his time together with Johnson. (Influence - Party Bosses)

Philly Philly Philly. That's the next spot on the itinerary for Senator Humphrey. The establishment liberal will make his class to the voters of the city, arguing that he is the only candidate that will fight for the working class industries here in dire need of government protection. (Rally - Pennsylvania)

Finally, Humphrey will make an appeal to moderates of the party who are turned off by Wallace's incredibly racist and incendiary rhetoric. He will paint himself as the unifying and conciliatory force in the primary, representing the interests of all wings of the party rather than Wallace only pandering to segregationists and far right extremists. (Influence - Moderates)

1. Wallace will tour Pennsylvania, hitting the trail as he rallies the white working class of the state around his bid. He will spend hours and hours decrying the destruction of the American family, and will promise that the working man of Pennsylvania will be upheld under his Presidency. (Rally)

2. Wallace will meet with Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo, requesting his endorsement and discussing with the former Police Commissioner how Wallace will uphold law and order under his Presidency. (Influence)

3. Wallace will tour Texas, rallying conservatives around his bid as he hopes to deliver one final primary defeat to old Lyndon. (Rally)

Influence (1!): Oddly enough, this sort of coalescing just doesn't seem quite ready to happen yet. Also, Humphrey's announcement seems to hurt Johnson fairly as it's now quite clear that a vote for LBJ is a vote for Texan delegates to be moved to Humphrey.

Rally (9): The rally goes over extremely well for HHH as he is on a roll following the Symington boost.

Influence (10!): Moderates are vibing with what Humphrey has to say.

Harris Endorsement (8): The endorsement of Harris goes as expected, it's a nice show of unity.

McCloskey Endorsement (2): Naturally, the endorsement of a convicted felon and largely disgraced politician doesn't go ove well.

Symington Endorsement (11/20): This is an undeniably positive development for Humphrey. It is by no means a knockout punch but much of Symington's suburban base is more likely to choose Humphrey over Wallace. However, most of Symington's southern moderate support does have a seemingly difficult choice to make and it is likely that a decent chunk of Symington's support will naturally bleed to Wallace.

Overall: +4. Humphrey has a decent week on the campaign trail.

Rally (2): Wallace has trouble connecting with his Northern audience at times, Pennsylvania is less working class than Wisconsin, for example, and the suburban voters aren't buying what he's selling. Wallace needs to focus more.

Influence (7): Rizzo, however, is over the moon to endorse Wallace and will do so with force. This will help Wallace's working class and law and order image.

Rally (4): Wallace still has trouble gaining his footing in Texas.

Overall: -2. Wallace is mostly out of the headlines as the big story is Symington's withdrawal.

Schmooze (3): The Vermont Republican Party still has some very conservative and rural elements turned off by Javits' metropolitan nature.

Schmooze (4): His time in Massachusetts is less fruitful than usual.

Influence (5): He secures the meeting but it does precious little in the way of concrete change. Still a nice photo op.

Overall: -3. Javits fails to make the news in any meaningful way.
